1. Purpose:

The ICA75 “Restrain Generator” is used for the production andmaintenance of a stable atmosphere of ethylene within a coldstore. The protocols of use for potatoes are detailed in Appendix 1of this manual. The application and use of this product is the user’sresponsibility and should be in accordance with relevant legislation.

2. Location:

2

The “Restrain Generator” should be located within the store that isbeing treated.

The minimum cold store temperature is –1 °C. This machine is notintended for use in temperatures below –1.0 °C.

The room should be at least empty volume 200m³ (equivalent toapproximately 60 one tonne boxes) for normal cold stores, or500m³ if it has been totally sealed to controlled atmospherestandards.

The maximum size store depends on the standard of construction, room air leakage, and the target level of “Restrain”. This equipmenthas been used satisfactorily in good quality cold stores of 4000tonne capacity. The machine should be located at floor level or nogreater than 1m above the floor in a position of good aircirculation. It should be placed away from normal loading activityand protected by barriers from potential damage from fork lifttrucks and similar hazards.

The machine should be within 15 degrees of level and be stable. The feet can be adjusted in height to achieve this if necessary.

Page 3: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

3

The machine must not be placed above or close to a source ofignition.

As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output produceswater in the form of vapour or steam depending on thesurrounding environment. Some water will condense forming drips, which will fall on to the floor underneath the machine, and willevaporate. A small amount of adsorbent material under the outlettube should be used to soak up this condensate.

3. Power Connection:

The machine is fitted with a 13A plug to standard BS1363A. Theplug is fitted with a 5A fuse, if the fuse is replaced it MUST bereplaced by one of the same type and value.

For use in continental Europe the machine is fitted with anapproved European power cord.

If the supply cord is damaged it must be replaced with the sametype by the manufacturer or its service agent or a similarly qualifiedperson.

Page 4: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

4. Maintenance:

At least once per month the following items should be checked:· The connection cable has not been damaged.· All covers are properly secured.· The ventilation filter on the bottom of the cabinet is

not blocked with dirt or dust. If necessary replace orclean filter material.

· The drain outlet of the drip collector in the base of thecabinet is free of dust and dirt. Clean if necessary.

4

The catalyst housing contains a heater which is HOT. The furnace iswell insulated and takes many hours to fall to a temperature that issafe to handle without protective gloves.

The cover to this box should only be removed by authorised servicepersonnel.

5. Fuel:

Only authorised “Restrain Fuel” should be used. This is exclusivelysupplied by the Restrain Company Ltd. The safe running & lifeexpectancy of the “Restrain Generator” is dependant on the correctformulation of “Restrain Fuel” (ethanol) being used.

The machine should be checked DAILY for correct operation. Seesection 13.

Caution: Do not remove any operating covers while power is ON andthe machine is in operation.

Page 5: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

The “Restrain Fuel” tank has a capacity of 20 Litres.

The Fuel FULL lamp is on when the content exceeds 16 Litres.

Fill the tank carefully using the funnel provided to prevent spillage.

If spillage occurs it should be contained within the “bund” area onthe top of the tank.

Clear any spilled fuel before proceeding and dispose of any soiledpaper and rags carefully.

After use and if the machine needs to be transported to anotherlocation empty and clean the tank as described in section 14.

5

Warning: Restrain Fuel is flammable and therefore when handlingthe fuel the following precautions must be taken:• Turn machine OFF at the power connection.• NO SMOKING.• Radios and mobile phones must be switched OFF.

Refer to the Restrain Fuel Safety sheet in Appendix 3 of this manual.

Note: The use of the “Restrain Fuel” is subject to Customs & Exciseregulations. A manual log must be kept in the Fuel Cabinet. Itshould record the following:1) Volume, date of each delivery & be signed in.2) Volume, date & allocation to each “Restrain Generator” using

the unique generator code. (Do NOT use store names in casegenerators are moved from one store to another!)

A “Restrain Fuel” log pro-forma is attached to this manual for youruse. See appendix 2

Page 6: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

6. Start up:

Before operation ensure that the equipment door is closed and isproperly secure. The door must not be open when power is appliedto the machine.

Check that the fuel tap at the bottom of the tank is ON (Handleparallel to tube). See picture.

Ensure that the fuel tank is full, above the 16 litre mark and theFUEL FULL light is on.

Turn ON power.

No generation will take place until the catalyst has achievedoperating temperature. (This will be approximately 30 minutes). When warming up the RED indicator lamp will be ON.

When the operating temperature is reached the red light will goOFF and the green indicator will be ON. The machine will thenproduce “Restrain” gas at a rate depending on the settings on thePLC controller. The Yellow LED indicates that the tank is filled to alevel greater than 16 Litres and indicated as Tank full.

6

Page 7: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

7

To correctly record fuel use, the tank must be filled to above the 16Lindicator both on initial filling and any subsequent re-filling.

If the green lamp flashes it indicates a fuel supply fault. If necessaryadd more fuel in the tank and check the fuel tap is fully on. Checkthe “Restrain Generator” 1 hour later, if the light remains flashingcheck the fuel filter (see section 12.1 ). If the red lamp flashes thisindicates the high temperature electronic cut out has operated andthe controls shut down.

To reset remove power for 1 minute and switch on again, if it cutsout again within 30 mins there is a fault. Call the service engineer.

The operational status of the machine can also be seen on the PLCscreen and details for this can be found in the appropriate part ofthis manual.

7. Measurement of RESTRAIN

8

The output of the generator responds tothe demand needed to maintain the“Restrain” level in the storage room. This ismeasured with the ICA514 Sensor, whichplugs into the round socket on the left-hand side of the machine.

The sensor should be positioned at least15m away from the machine and in anarea of good air circulation.

Warning: The Restrain Sensor for measuring the ethylene levels instore must be kept away from Restrain Fuel (ethanol) at all times.(Even when switched off or in transport). Fumes from the fuel willpermanently damage the sensor. For protection againstcontamination the sensors are transported and stored in a sealedplastic container. They should be removed from the container andplaced in position only when machine is about to be started up.

The sensor can also be affected by forklift exhaust fumes. Incorrectreadings will be obtained when these are operating in the vicinity, but are not of high enough concentrations under normal operatingconditions to cause permanent damage to the sensor.

Page 9: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

9

The ICA514 Sensor has an input for a temperature sensor, whichmonitors and records the store temperature at the same time asthe “Restrain” reading. The System is supplied with thetemperature sensor and should be used, providing a good record ofstore temperature throughout the storage period.

The output from the detector is displayed on the screen of the“Restrain Generator” in normal operating mode.

The sensor has a green light, which flashes. This indicates a healthyconnection to the generator. It also monitors the internal batterywithin the sensor.

The sensing cell and battery within the sensor have a life in theorder of 18 months and should be replaced every storage seasonfor potatoes stored at 20% restrain. For storage at higher levelsmore frequent replacement may be needed.

The sensor calibration may drift with time and exposure to acontinuous level of Restrain. It is recommended that the calibrationis checked every couple of months with a portable ethylenedetector. Any calibration adjustments should only be carried out byan authorised operative.

The zero setting is very critical in the Potato Slow Start Mode andshould only be set by an authorised service engineer with bottledcontaminant free gas. There is often some ethylene in ambient airwhich will be indicated on the sensor.

9. Operational Protocol

When using the Restrain System in Ware Potatoes* the “SlowStart” programme must be used. This should be selected whenethylene is being introduced to a stock of ware potatoes for thefirst time.

The RESTRAIN Store Management protocol shown in appendix 1in MUST always be followed.

When set to the Slow Start programme the Restrain Generatorautomatically and gradually increases the level of ethylene in thestore from a starting level of 0.2% Restrain (0.1 ppm ethylene) to20% Restrain (10 ppm ethylene) over a 20 day period.

This is to ensure the most efficient operation of the machine andto avoid high respiration levels of the potatoes which could bedetrimental. Care should be taken before commencing the SlowStart to ensure that the store atmosphere is clear of internalcombustion engine fumes.

The key features of the programme are:

• A Slow Start programme that generates & maintains the levelsof ethylene as set out in the chart set out below.

• A programmable start date provided for the user to choosewhen the automatic Slow Start is activated.

Page 12: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

12

9.1 Slow Start Operation:

Before commencing the Restrain treatment please consult the LatestRestrain Store Management Protocol. See Appendix 1 of thismanual.

Once the decision has been made to commence Restrain treatment, the following instructions should be followed.

Before setting the commencement date for the Slow Startprogramme check that the “today’s date” shown on the screen iscorrect.

To set the Start Date:• From the main screen select F 8.• Then select F 7

• Then select F 1 Change start date , day , month & year.• F 1 to change the day , enter numbers, then press Enter.• F 2 to change the month, enter numbers, then press Enter.• F 3 to change the year, enter the numbers, then press Enter.• Once this has been done check that the date is correct and press

ESC to return to the main screen.• The screen should then appear as below with the days before the

start date shown.

13

The Red light may come on for a while after switch on but then willgo OFF.

The Green light will not be ON.

Display above shows:Days Date = 30 Oct 2005Restrain % = 0.0 %Store Temp = 4.1ºCRun = - 2 days ( eg. the Slow Start is set to Run on 1-11-05 @ 00:00hrs ).Current Machine Set Point = 0.0% RestrainOnce the Slow Start Programme has commenced the display willappear as below

NOTE: The machine will not start operation until MIDNIGHT of theselected start day.

The display above shows: Days Date = 08 September 2006Restrain % = 1.1%

Page 14: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

Store Temp = 3.8ºCRun = 13 days (e.g. the Slow Start Programme has been runningfor 13 days).Current Machine Set Point = 1.0 % Restrain

Once the Slow Start Programme has run for 19 days the level ofethylene being produced and maintained in the store will havereached 20 % and will subsequently maintain that level.

10. Alarms

Because the heaters are not started until the machine startsgenerating ethylene, there could be low temperature and heaterfault alarms in the initial start up phase. These can beacknowledged and ignored.

The machine will not start operation until MIDNIGHT of theselected start day.

On initial start up the fuel usage is so low that the fuel recordingsystem is not sensitive enough to record usage. During the startup phase ignore the fuel used, days remaining and fuel low alarmswhich can be acknowledged.

The green light on the machine indicates correct operation. If thered light is ON after the machine has started up and running thena fault has occurred.

The amber light indicates the fuel tank has more than 16 L and isfull.

12. Trouble Shooting

ORANGE fuel light only ON if fuel is in excess of 16L. This resets the electronic counter. Should alwaysrefill machine with fuel so that light comes ON.

RED light is ON when machine starts up andindicates furnace is COLD. It should be OFF after30 mins to 1 hour after start up.

It will also come back ON after start up of potatoslow start is in operation and the time is before24.00 on the starting day.

If the light comes ON during normal operation Ethylenegeneration will be stopped. This fault is likely to be in order ofprobability:

• Furnace thermal cut out switch activated. There are 2bimetallic safety switches directly on the furnace under theinsulation material which cut out the heater in the event ofhigh temperature. These can sometimes be caused to openwith a mechanical shock, especially if the furnace is hot at thetime. There is a reset button on the switches

• Heater Fuse broken• Faulty temperature sensor• Faulty heater (There are 2 heaters and the machine will run

with only one in operation but warm up will be slower)• Faulty electronics

21

Page 22: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

If the RED light is FLASHING this indicates the temperature has gone too high and the electronic safety cut out has operated.

This can be reset by removing the electrical power for 15 mins and trying again. If the fault persists the most likely cause is:

• Faulty furnace temperature sensor• Fault in electronics

The GREEN run light should be ON in normal operation (but not while the Potato machine is waiting to start). If the GREEN light is FLASHING this indicates a fuel fault has occurred. The following should be checked in order:• There is at least 2 L of fuel remaining in the Tank• The fuel tap is turned ON (in line with pipe)• Fuel filter has not become blocked • Fuel pipes are not kinked or damaged • No airlock in system (this is usually overcome by filling tank to

increase the gravity pressure)

12.1 Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is located underneath the fuel tank. Thisfilter is of sintered bronze construction with a 20 micronpore size. If the filter becomes blocked it can be cleaned.• Turn OFF fuel tap• Remove filter from clip and unscrew• Remove Bronze element and clean out dirt under

running water from tap• Replace element and re-assemble taking care the seal

is not damaged and the housing is fully tightened• Turn on fuel tap and check there are no leaks from

the filter housing22

Page 23: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

23

13. Daily check

Check the following:

• Today’s Date is correct (If not reset clock, request instructions)

• Run time is correct number of days from starting (If not check Start date setting)

• SLOW START ACTIVE message is showing (If not check machine settings, request instructions)

• Restrain reading is close to the set point (If not check sensor has not been contaminated or exposed to vehicle exhausts, Restrain fuel or other contaminants. If in doubt remove sensor and leave in fresh air away from produce and vehicles for 24 hours and try again.{ Note that even fresh air can sometimes have up to 1% Restrain in it }

Press F1 to see the detailed screen. The restrain and set point reading is repeated but note the resolution is lower than the main screen and readings past the decimal point are not shown

Page 24: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

24

The operational mode is shown. Generate On Off is the modewhen slow start is in progress changing to proportional when theslow start phase is complete.

The fuel output number in L/d ( Litres/day ) will only show whenthe sensor is showing a lower ethylene than the set point. This willnot often be on during the slow start period.

The bottom line shows the total amount of fuel consumed, theaverage rate for the previous 24 hours (updated automaticallyevery night). Both of these numbers will be very small and may noteven register at the start of the slow start procedure.

The fuel left is reset to 16 litres after refilling. It will remain at 16Luntil sufficient fuel is consumed to start falling below the 16 L levelsensor. The fuel used is then deducted from the total to give theamount left. The days remaining is calculated from the rate andamount left. This can change considerable during the low use startup period and only becomes useful when full and consistentoperation is in progress.

25

14. Decommissioning and movement

When the use of the equipment is no longer required and themachine moved to a new location proceed as follows:

• Turn the machine off and disconnect from power source. Allowto cool down for at least 12 hours.

• Turn the fuel tap to OFF

• Empty the remaining fuel back into the container in which itwas supplied

NOTE: FLAMMABLE LIQUID see section 5

NOTE: Fuel quantities to be accounted for to meet customsregulations see section 5

• Rinse out tank with 5 L water and empty

• Pack machine back into the original packaging for transport

• Keep sensor away from fuel and place back into the sealedplastic in which it was sent.

Appendix 1

Restrain SystemPrepack Ware Potato Storage Protocol October 2007 onwards

(issue date 24-09-07)

Minimising the respiration rate increase in the stored crop during the introduction of ethylene is important. Following the simple steps below will enable you to use Restrain system successfully.

The RESTRAIN machine and sensor should have been serviced and calibrated by an authorised engineer before the storage season is started.

1) The potato crop must be of good quality and settled in store

and reached the holding temperature.

2) Only the pre-programmed Slow Start Up Restrain program

should be used on prepack potatoes.

3) Restrain can only be introduced when the crop shows signs the

first signs of eye movement.

4) When ethylene is introduced air must be circulated

continuously within the store for the first 3 weeks to avoid the

localised build up of carbon dioxide. (Elevated carbon dioxide

above 0.5% increases respiration rates).

5) Flush the store daily with fresh air if carbon dioxide levels are

likely to exceed 0.5%. If you are unsure please contact Restrain

Company and we will check your store for you. 26

Page 27: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

6) For Restrain treatments before 1st November please contact

Restrain Company so that respiration rates and store CO2 levels

can be checked.

7) After 1st November all varieties can be treated without

contacting Restrain Company with the exception of Maris Piper,

King Edward, and Marfona.

8) For Restrain treatments before 1st January of Maris Piper, King

Edward, and Marfona please contact Restrain Company so that

respiration rates and store CO2 levels can be checked.

9) All varieties can be treated after January 1st without contacting

Restrain Company.

10) Restrain may be used later in the storage season following

CIPC to avoid the need for a second application and high CIPC

residues.

Use of Ambient Air

To minimise fuel usage during ambient air use there are two options:-

• An additional controller which turns off the Restrain System whilst out

side air is being used can be fitted.

• The Restrain Generator can be set on the existing settings to limit the

fuel usage and not operate at maximum fuel rates. Please contact

Restrain Company Limited if you require either option.27

Page 28: ICA75 Restrain Generator Potatoes Operators Handbook · 3 The machine must not be placed above or close to a source of ignition. As well as the Restrain atmosphere the machine output

28

1.1 Store Unloading

• The Restrain Generator should be left in operation until all of

the potatoes have been removed from store & marketed.

• An interval of 3 days between removal from store and

consumption should be observed.
