Set up camp at Eden Court. . .Well, they do seem to have an unearthly amount of entertainment on off er this month - like a whole year from ten years ago rolled into just four weeks. Crazy stuff ‒ but really good ‒ so, we’re serious, dry off the tent, unfurl the sleeping bags and dig out yer thermal jammies (oh, you already did that) and hotfoot it down to Eden Court’s lovely lawns and set up shop. It’ll be like the whole ‘Occupy’ thing - only colder, wetter and with less dogs on strings (don’t think I’m being condescending - we don’t even have a string for our dog). . .Okay, to be fair, it’s not just the ‘Court that’s got it going on in October - there’s plenty of magic to be had elsewhere as well. A summary of the plunder to be found within our lovely lithe leaves of leisure: Art: Look out for Hock-Aun Teh at Kilmorack Gallery and two ace shows at IG:LU - cigarbox instruments and cartoons from Donald Jack and awesome biographical illustrations from ‘Salty Philip’ (Lynn MacPherson). And perhaps most unusual of all, a ‘happening’ relating to the Nazi’s Entartete Kunst show ridiculing modern art (that proved more popular than their own pompous ‘Great German Art Exhibit’) - Entartet takes place at appointed times at... oh, Eden Court’s OneTouch theatre. Film: Notable shows for the month include The Fifth State - in which hottie Benedict Cumberbatch (don’t argue) fops around as Julian Assange, Ender’s Game, the Malik-esque Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Karen ‘Who?’ Gillan’s newie Not Another Happy Ending, plus the rather scary prospect of the Proclaimers musical turned movie, Sunshine On Leith, and particular attention should be reserved for the Thrillseekers Adventure Film Festival at. . . Eden CourtKids: A whole swathe of Halloween events are on - but helpfully early and weekend-based is the council’s own extravaganza, The Great Ghost Train Crash at Ness Islands - see pages 10 & 11. The Inshes Adventure Park opens (see p14) and two other shows to watch: SDT’s Innocence Unplugged at the Craigmonie Centre and Scottish Opera’s intriguing SensoryO at - you know where. . .Music: Get all excited with pop-emoters Bastille, or with the Bay City Rollers (Story), Vivaldi out with La Serenissima, fi ddle up with Blazin’ in Beauly, or check out the new heirs to the Scot-rock crown, Fatherson, at. . . Ironworks ! Specials: Hone your survival skills with Ray Mears (yes, Eden. . .) Sport: The Culloden 17.46K and Aviemore half marathon plus El Kessocko - again. Theatre: Heaps. Seriously it won’t all fi t here - go to p32 right now. Now!Just to good to be true. . . Check out whatsonhighlands.com

ARTThe Art of Diversity

Some splendid art at KILMORACK GALLERY this month with three different artists all presenting vivaciously dynamic work that may be different in style, but share an assured appeal.Malaysian born HOCK-AUN TEH [1] came to Scotland to study at the Glasgow School of Art in the early 1970s, a time when he also founded the martial art, Tukido. To Hock-Aun events as diverse as dancing outside a temple or watching a squirrel in his garden are distilled into expressive feelings of energy, communicated with an impressive abstract expressionist style. In recent times Teh has had notable success in South East Asia with work that bridges eastern and western art, so this is a long awaited opportunity to see more of this artists work in his adopted country of Scotland.MADELINE MACKAY’s work centres around the Northern Landscape and the creatures that live there, the animals and archaeology in her etchings and prints giving them a timeless quality and great promise. It’s no surprise that having only graduated last year, she already has a host of awards to her name.Edinburgh based ALAN MCGOWAN creates work that explores the body through paint. His natural draftsmanship (which has won McGowan many prestigious illustrative contracts) and his familiarity with his regular life models gives his work huge freedom and allow him to constantly explore fresh ground, pushing paint in new ways. His show, like those of Mackay and Hock-Aun run until 26 OCT. More details at www.kilmorackgallery.co.uk

In truth we’re not quite sure whether ENTARTET (EDEN COURT ONETOUCH, 16-19 OCT) is art or theatre. It’s probably both, which is no bad thing. And the inspiration behind it is fascinating.“75 years ago an infamous exhibition opened in Munich. It ridiculed the Modern Art on display and marked their creators as degenerate - and dangerous. Entartet uses original text from the exhibition’s guidebook to create an audio guide to an empty spaces. It creates an environment to imagine an infamous event and the world in which it took place.”Entartet is experienced like an exhibition; audience members enter and exit in their own time. On average the experience lasts around 30 minutes. Max 8 people in the installation space at any one time.Feeling brave enough to give it a go? Could be rewarding..

EDEN COURT GALLERYTHIS PARK LIFE BY ANN VASTANO, Stalls Gallery, October, Based in Aviemore, ANN VASTANO’S work is inspired by those dramatic landforms of the locality. The captivating cottages, bothies and holdings which hug the hillsides, these muses prove a constant challenge and inspiration.

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES BY CECILIA MANN, Blink Gallery, October, Cecilia’s work is strongly infl uenced by the colour and natural structure of the environment where she lives, in the hills overlooking Loch Ness.EXPLORING PREHISTORIC ROUNDHOUSES: THE STORY OF THE WEDIGS COMMUNITY PROJECT BY LOCHBROOM FIELD CLUB, OneTouch Gallery, October, In 2010 a group of interested folk from Ross-shire and Skye began investigating roundhouses… Local Communities and schools were involved… The exhibition tells the story of these investigations.AUTISM: LIFE IN COLOUR BY AUTISM INITIATIVES, Stalls Foyer, 15-26 OctoberCapturing the views of people with autism about their lives by inviting them to submit two photographs or video clips taken on 02 April 2013 – World Autism Awareness day.

IG:LU Event #60: DÉRIVE AND DÉTOURNEMENTFri 20 Sep–04 Oct 11am–4pm. Mothertongue is a newly formed artist collective based in Elgin whose mediums vary – painting, photography, installation and performance – featuring MATTHEW GORDON WELLS, SAM LAWSON, KRISTA WRIGHT, HANNAH BLACK & CHARIS EDWARD WELLS.

Event #61: SALTY PHILIP ILLUSTRATIONS (aka Lynn Macpherson)Fri 11–FRI 25 Oct 11am–4pmShow from Dublin-based illustrator specialising

in digital prints. Each piece in the show is a little snippet of something that has happened in Lynn’s life this year. “I’ve never been into broadcasting my entire life over social network sites and let’s face it, we all know someone who loves to tell you when they’ve had a bad dream or if work is particularly slow that day… I had the idea that instead of arbitrarily typing what was going on in life, I would take the time to draw a not very literal representation (because that would be boring) of what was going on. There is something for most people to relate to in them because they’re open to interpretation and comes from a very honest place… But don’t ever ask me who they’re about!” A real talent not to miss.

Event #62: THE ADVENTURES OF CIGARBOX DON Mon 28 Oct–Mon 11 Nov, 11am–4pmMixed show from one of the Highlands’ more eclectic creatives, Donald Jack. At time of print we know this show will include unique musical instruments, prints of a self-featuring cartoon strip and live performance. To be more specifi c: 12+ wall-hung instruments (eg, cigar-box guitar & fi ddle, wine-box bass, dog-bowl banjo…), a series of prints of posters, graphics, photographs & info sheets related to cigarbox guitars, performances in the large room, up to 20 cartoon strips, with the endearing adventures of DON. And at least one gig. “Since starting to make musical instruments from recycled materials in 2011, my creative endeavours have led me to new experiences; taken unexpected turns and I have found

myself in some magical places.” See website for more !

This time of year brings not only a welter of TV designed to keep you hooked through the winter months, but also a whole heap of fi lm releases aiming at more than just the school holiday audience, many with their eyes on potential Oscars.

FILTH (EDEN COURT, FRI 18–THU 24 OCT) is most defi nitely a “grown up” fi lm. We told you a couple of months back about James McAvoy’s excellent performance as an alco-cop in the long awaited screen adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s book and now you get the chance to see for yourself just how good it is. Probably not one for the oscars, mind…

AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS [1] (EC, 11–17 OCT) is one of those fi lms tipped to pick up Oscars, thanks to impressive performances from ROONEY MARA and CASEY AFFLECK, plus a gorgeous cinematic canvas created by director David Lowery. With echoes of Terence Malick’s Badlands, Lowery (who also edited Shane Carruth’s recent Upstream Colour), ensures this tale of a released Texas criminal reuniting with his wife and son is more than just schmaltzy drama.

Unfortunately “schmaltzy” is just the description being bandied about regarding NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING [2] (EC 25 OCT–05 NOV), in which our very own KAREN GILLAN plays a Glasgow author trying to overcome writer’s block. We bow to no-one in our devotion to the glorious Ms Gillan, but hopefully her host of forthcoming projects will do more justice to her undoubted talents than this lightweight romantic affair.

More misguided script choices from a fi ne actress as NAOMI WATTS takes on the title role of the doomed princess in DIANA (EC 04–10 OCT). Already picking up the worst reviews of the year, we’d call it car crash cinema unless, well, you know… Amazingly, it’s directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, who made the excellent Downfall.

Watts and Gillan would do well to work with one of the brightest new talents in American cinema, LAKE BELL. She wrote, directed and stars in IN A WORLD… [3] (EC, 25–27 & 30 OCT) about a father and daughter competing in the world of movie voiceovers, an unusual pretext for a fi lm that’s being raved about by those in the know. Very much a talent to watch.

Closer to home, SUNSHINE ON LEITH (EC, 04-24 OCT) is Dexter Fletcher’s screen adaptation of the play (which you might have seen at Eden Court) set to the music of The Proclaimers. The reliable PETER MULLEN and Marmite JANE HORROCKS star in the story of friends struggling to adapt to life outside the army.

A quick word for the THRILLSEEKERS ADVENTURE FILM FESTIVAL 2013 (EC, THU 17, THU 24 & THU 31 OCT), returning for its third year with the best in extreme sports and adventure fl icks. See adventurefest.co.uk for the full line up…

Lastly, you might want to check out THE FIFTH STATE, BLUE JASMINE [4] and ENDER’S GAME - see the listings >> for reasons why…

Never let it be said that entertainment for kids doesn’t cover the cultural waterfront, as this month’s offerings demonstrate. On 12 & 13 OCT for example, in EDEN COURT’S JIM LOVE STUDIO, Scottish Opera are putting on SENSORYO which takes you on a train ride through the jungle to meet a friendly lion who sleeps under the stars. The set is inviting and tactile, with its unique audience in mind, and the show features a mix of live and recorded vocals and exciting percussive sounds to inspire the imagination and bring the adventure to life.

Without wanting to be too judgemental, we’re pretty sure the audience for the above would also be interested in INNOCENCE UNPLUGGED from SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE at CRAIGMONIE CENTRE on SAT 19 OCT at 11am. An exciting opportunity for 0–7 year olds (and their adults!), to enter a realm of mystery, fun and adventure, it’s a unique performance playroom where the audience explore William Blake’s Songs of Innocence as children are invited to dance on an interactive journey of theatre, story and live music choreographed by Fleur Darkin.

Just as eagerly awaited, if a tad more populist is that latest visit to EDEN COURT by THE SINGING KETTLE with a show called RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE running from 18–20 OCT. Much-loved Cilla has left the entourage, with Anya joining Gary and Kevin in the new line-up. As for the show itself, Bonzo the Dog causes pandemonium with his mischievous monkeying around as the intrepid explorers uncover hilarious surprises under thousands of funky ferns and behind every banana tree. This non-stop, ‘totally awesome’ safari adventure is your archetypal festival of fun for girls and boys of all ages. Remember - Come dressed as your favourite wild animal to sing along with the sounds of the jungle.

Inshes Adventure Park

Inshes Community Association (a company limited by guarantee) set up a year ago, chaired by former councillor Roy Pederson, to oversee plans to develop a high quality adventure and activity park at Inshes. They applied to both the Inverness Common Good Fund and the Sport Scotland ‘Active Places’ fund and have raised over £300,000 for this fi rst stage of the project.

This phase is now complete and the Fun Day Launch is the public’s fi rst chance to come and see the exciting new adventure park fi rst-hand.

There are a further two phases of this extensive and ambitious project planned - stretching from Sir Walter Scott Drive right up to Milton of Leys - which will ultimately result in a really extensive facility for the city. The council have already spent over £1m on infrastructure for the area. The belief is that the adventure play area - complete with climbing walls, parkour area and artifi cial pitches, etc, will act as a gateway into sport for many of the city’s young inhabitants.

UK based but hailing from Bridgetown, Western Australia, EMILY BARKER is a compelling singer-songwriter, who with her band The Red Clay Halo blends classical, rock, country and folk infl uences rather nicely. She’s released four critically acclaimed albums, the latest being ‘Dear River’, played a string of sold-out UK dates, performed with Frank Turner at the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony and written the award winning themes to hit BBC dramas Wallander and The Shadow Line. But what we wanted to know, is just which songs give her goosebumps? Here’s what she told us, ahead of her IRONWORKS gig on SAT 12 OCT:

AUSTIN LUCAS - Fountain of YouthLast year I had the pleasure of touring with Chuck Ragan on his collaborative ‘Revival Tour’ involving four other singer-songwriters. During our 6 weeks together on the road we discovered all the musicians we already had in common, as well as those we which we hadn’t yet met but were bound to any day now due to the community having grown further through our friendships. Austin Lucas is one of these people. He’s toured and recorded with Chuck on numerous occasions so I got around to listening to his music and was completely blown away! This song is from the record ‘Somebody Loves You’ and sits amongst many other country gems. Beautiful, unique melodies and lyrics, gorgeous close harmonies, pedal steel and fi ddle. Can’t stop listening to this record.

CRAZY ARM - RemembranceI recently met an incredible Devon-based punk band called Crazy Arm at Chagstock Festival. We’d heard of each other through the music grapevine thanks to both of us having toured with Frank Turner. Anyway, we swapped CDs as well as they gave me a copy of their forthcoming acoustic record ‘The Southern Wild’ (out 23rd Sept on Xtra Mile). I

particularly love the song ‘Remembrance’ with its Crosby,

Stills, Nash style harmony intro and I’m also a big sucker

for the major to minor chord change in there!

THE NATIONAL - Don’t Swallow the Cap

I love The National’s new record ‘Trouble Will Find Me’.

Genius and obtuse lyrics, great melodies, different time

signatures, great production. I think this is my favourite

song on the album but ‘I Need My Girl’ is a close

contender!

 WILCO - Jesus, etc.

Wilco are one of those bands that friends have

recommended I listen to for years but for some reason

I’ve only just got around to it recently. This song kills me

with its stripped-back production and simple melody. It’s

the lyric “you were right about the stars” that got under my

skin instantly and everything just fell into place from there.

LINDA THOMPSON - Day After Tomorrow

This is a Tom Waits cover from his album ‘Real Gone’

but I fi rst heard the Linda Thompson version on her

record ‘Versatile Heart’. Recently I was invited by Dermot

O’Leary to be a part of his ‘Choir of Angels’ collaboration

which involves going into the Maida Vale BBC studio and

recording a cover song to a theme. This session’s theme

was War Songs, so I chose ‘Day After Tomorrow’. The

lyrics make me cry every single time I hear them. It’s an

anti-war song in the form of a letter written by a soldier

back home to his family in America. “What I miss you

won’t believe, shovelling snow and raking leaves” - talking

of all the things he took for granted about home and family

and safety. Things which seem so vital when miles

away on a battle fi eld praying to see another day

in this world. It’s a stunning piece of songwriting. 15

CLUBBINGCLASSICAL FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

There’s a major retro vibe to musical proceedings, even in ostensibly fresh new combos like BASTILLE [1] (IRONWORKS, 28 OCT) who seem to be particularly popular in Scotland for some reason, perhaps because they mix the kind of bouncy electropop that Calvin Harris does so well with unashamedly big choruses that wouldn’t have been out of place with the likes of Deacon Blue. It’s proving a successful formula, so much so that the gig is sold out, so your only hope is returns if you want to go.

STEVE MASON [2] (IRONWORKS, 24 OCT) has a hugely infl uential body of work with The Beta Band under his belt and hopefully he’ll reprise some of those glories at his gig, as well as demonstrating with his new stuff that he’s one of the most imaginative and unusual songwriters around, bringing real panache to the whole man-with-guitar thing.

It’s very much back to past glories for BAY CITY ROLLERS STORY [3] (EDEN COURT, 04 OCT), which isn’t some sort of theatrical analysis of teenybop, but in fact the new name for Rollers front man LES MCKEOWN’S touring enterprise. Litigation has obviously resulted in his chosen name for proceedings, but, rest assured, hits will come thick and fast and perhaps grandmothers in the audience will drag their tartan-hemmed trews from the back of the cupboard.

Sometimes, with line-up changes, it’s hard to tell when an original band ends and a tribute act begins, but THE DRIFTERS [4] (EDEN COURT, 03 OCT) and WISHBONE ASH [5] (IRONWORKS, 26 OCT) are, at least nominally, the real thing. Though you’ll get no less pleasure from a host of homages including THE MAGIC OF THE BEATLES (STRATHPEFFER PAVILION, 02 OCT), LIVEWIRE AC/DC (IRONWORKS, 05 OCT), T–REXTASY (STRATHPEFFER PAVILION, 01 NOV) and ABBA PARTY NIGHT (EDEN COURT, 01 NOV).

And there are more competing claims to authenticity with THREE PHANTOMS [6] (EDEN COURT EMPIRE, 22/23 OCT) as a trio of performers who’ve played the titular role join a strong cast for a night of Lloyd Webber’s fi nest tunes, while LA SERENISSIMA [7] (EDEN COURT, 13 OCT) is as retro as it comes, being an evening of Vivaldi from the eighteenth century.

Perhaps best to end with a burst of something more modern, so we’ll heartily recommend Scotland’s fi nest young band FATHERSON [8] at IRONWORKS on 27 OCT, a special Mental Health Arts & Film Festival event at HOOTANANNY on 31 OCT featuring FURRY VENGEANCE [9], EVIL EDISON and LAST SUMMER EFFECT among others and the welcome return of the STATE OF GRACE club night at KARMA LOUNGE on 12 OCT, headlined by JAMIE ANDERSON [10].

CLUBSCHARITY MARKETS MUNICIPAL TALKS

There was a time when it seemed like RAY MEARS spent his entire life huddled in some godforsaken forest clearing collecting water from tree sap, eating ants and generally displaying the sort of survival skills that appeared to make him nigh on indestructible. Then someone found out that not only could he do all that, but he was also adept at communicating his enthusiasm for such behaviour and passing on his talents, resulting in him being the trailblazer (quite possibly literally) for a whole slew of TV living-off-the-landers. He remains the best though and has even found time in between his extensive public appearances to indulge in some “outdoor time” in America and Australia recently. He’ll be telling us all about it as well as recounting some of his other adventures when he appears at EDEN COURT EMPIRE on 01 OCT. A word of warning though. He’s been getting a bit grumpy in the press about the leaked revelation that he was called in to help track down Raoul Moat (and, he believes, even got within twenty feet of him), so best not lob any questions about that towards him.

Perhaps you could ask him instead if he wants to help deal with navigating NESS ISLANDS for THE GREAT GHOST TRAIN CRASH on FRI 25 & SAT 26 OCT. That’s the theme for the latest instalment in what has quickly become a hugely popular Halloween adventure on the islands, with them transformed each year for a variety of scenarios. We’ve already had pirates and aliens and this time the pretext is that The Ghost Train which was on its way to a Halloween Party in Scary Bay has derailed at Ness Islands and all the ghosts and ghouls have escaped. Luckily, they’re scared of all kinds of young Fiends, Vampires and Skeletons – so bring your little monsters down to The Islands to scare them away and help save Inverness. See p10-11 for more details.

SPORT

It seemed too good to be true… a

gift from the Gods… there’d have to

be a catch.

I, like probably everyone who’s

written a regular column anywhere

and as I’ve said previously in this

one, have a notion that one day I’ll

write a book. Most likely it will not

be a very long book since, well,

time is moving on and I’ve not even

started it yet, and I haven’t really

got the stamina, perseverance,

talent or inclination to write a

long book. Oh yes, and I’m lazy –

that’ll probably be a major factor

controlling the book’s length too.

Apart from overcoming the inertia

though, the problem for me has

always been the storyline. I believe

this is a fairly essential ingredient

in a book since people like it all to

mean something, lead somewhere

and generally have the whole

beginning… middle… and end

scenario they teach you at school.

I’m not really that good at making

up stories but I feel if someone

gave me the basic narrative I could

expand on it and turn it into a book

which is why I got excited when I

saw the wee sign at the side of the

road. It was nothing fancy, just a

small square of chipboard painted

white inscribed with four words and

a bold red arrow.

“great plot for sale”… it proclaimed.

Following the arrow’s direction led

to a verdant landscape, a few trees,

a nice view of the Black Isle and

about half an acre of fi eld with a

small ruined cottage off to the right

– suddenly it dawns. “You’re selling

a plot of land then”… “err yes.

What did you think – I was selling a

plot for a book? I’d hardly advertise

that on a wee sign at the side

of the road would I? Is that even

something you can buy? Surely if

someone came up with a great plot

for a book they’d just go ahead and

write the book?”

So it was too good to be true, but at

least I got a column out of it, not a

book perhaps but if I put it with the

hundred or so I’ve already written

there’ll at least be enough pages for

a book…KEN

SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

Biggest sporting event of the month in terms of participation is the BAXTER’S LOCH NESS MARATHON AND FESTIVAL OF RUNNING (29 SEP) which we told you about last month and which you can fi nd details of at lochnessmarathon.co.uk. If that doesn’t take too much out of you though, you might want to have a go at the AVIEMORE HIGHLAND HALF MARATHON & 10K on 13 OCT or the shorter MACDONALD MILE FUN RUN the day before on 12 OCT. More info on both at aviemorehalfmarathon.org. And, later in the month, on 27 OCT there are the CULLODEN RUNS [1] in aid of Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland. You can do either the (admirably precise) 17.46K which passes through stunning scenery and by historic landmarks like Culloden Battlefi eld, Clava Cairns, River Nairn and the awesome River Nairn Viaduct, or just the 10K around the perimeter roads of the battlefi eld. See chssi.org.uk/culloden for more.

We’d always thought the BLAZIN’ IN BEAULY festival (12–19 OCT) was all about fi ddles, but this year it’s capitalising on the infl ux of visitors to provide a bit of exercise in the great outdoors with a CANOEING & ARCHERY TRIP on 13 OCT. Paddle through the stunning Aigas Gorge as well as an hour and a half of archery on the banks of the River Beauly at Aigas Golf Course. Transport to and from Beauly included. More at blazininbeauly.com

Now that all that international football nonsense is over for the year, it’s back to the proper game and the prospect of another EL KESSOCKO as ROSS COUNTY host ICT on 25 OCT. Form is legally obliged to go “out the window” for such meetings, so expect blood, thunder and goals galore as ICT aim to consolidate their magnifi cent start to the season and County try to confi rm that their football is good enough for their impressive new-look stadium.

It seemed too good to be true… a

gift from the Gods… there’d have to

be a catch.

I, like probably everyone who’s

written a regular column anywhere

and as I’ve said previously in this

one, have a notion that one day I’ll

write a book. Most likely it will not

be a very long book since, well,

time is moving on and I’ve not even

started it yet, and I haven’t really

got the stamina, perseverance,

talent or inclination to write a

long book. Oh yes, and I’m lazy –

that’ll probably be a major factor

controlling the book’s length too.

Apart from overcoming the inertia

though, the problem for me has

always been the storyline. I believe

this is a fairly essential ingredient

in a book since people like it all to

mean something, lead somewhere

and generally have the whole

beginning… middle… and end

scenario they teach you at school.

I’m not really that good at making

up stories but I feel if someone

gave me the basic narrative I could

expand on it and turn it into a book

which is why I got excited when I

saw the wee sign at the side of the

road. It was nothing fancy, just a

small square of chipboard painted

white inscribed with four words and

a bold red arrow.

“great plot for sale”… it proclaimed.

Following the arrow’s direction led

to a verdant landscape, a few trees,

a nice view of the Black Isle and

about half an acre of fi eld with a

small ruined cottage off to the right

– suddenly it dawns. “You’re selling

a plot of land then”… “err yes.

What did you think – I was selling a

plot for a book? I’d hardly advertise

that on a wee sign at the side

of the road would I? Is that even

something you can buy? Surely if

someone came up with a great plot

for a book they’d just go ahead and

write the book?”

So it was too good to be true, but at

least I got a column out of it, not a

book perhaps but if I put it with the

hundred or so I’ve already written

there’ll at least be enough pages for

a book…KEN

Autumn is all about heading indoors and there are plenty of opportunities for that this month with enough theatrical delights to fi ll an entire issue, not just a page.

Where to begin? Well how about a couple of fun-looking magic shows. MORGAN & WEST are coming quite a distance for their EDEN COURT show on 26 SEP, all the way from Victorian times in fact, giving a steampunk vibe to their astounding skills. A couple of days later, on 28 SEP, ALI COOK [1] is coming to SPECTRUM CENTRE for a special Carnivale event. One of the fi nest sleight-of-handers around, he’s written for fi lm and TV, with the likes of Penn & Teller and Derren Brown utilising his talents.

From magic to comedy with a couple of big names coming to EDEN COURT in the shape of JACK DEE [2] on 09 OCT and PAUL MERTON [3] (with his IMPRO CHUMS) on 26 OCT. With the whizz-bang of Edinburgh having faded away, now is the time that comics traditionally undertake mammoth tours, our advantage being that we get to see them early into their treks before ennui has set in.

You’d prefer a bit of dance? Well presumably DREAMBOYS [4] (EC, 02 OCT) fi t into that category, though you get the feeling that much of the audience will be too busy mopping their brows to demand too much syncopation. Rather more tasteful is RAPUNZEL [5] (EC, 11 & 12 OCT), a darkly beautiful show from BALLET LORENT which involves an impressive roster of collaborators including Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, Doctor Who composer Murray Gold and Costume Designer for Game Of Thrones, Michele Clapton. And talking of big names, there’s none bigger in the ballet world than MATTHEW BOURNE who appears as part of SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW [6], by DAVID HUGHES DANCE, a mix of classical ballet, modern dance and storytelling. It’s at CRAIGMONIE CENTRE on 02 NOV, then at EDEN COURT on 19 NOV.

And the delights keep on coming. Theatrical musts look like being an invigorating production of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE [7] (EC, 30 & 31 OCT), political drama in WE WILL BE FREE (EC, 27 OCT) about the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a wordlessly beautiful love story in TRANSLUNAR PARADISE [8] (EC, 20 OCT), a homecoming performance of the wonderful TAILOR OF INVERNESS [9] (EC, 30 OCT) and even a witty lecture creation from DANIEL BYE (EC, 28 OCT) called THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING [10] where we’re all promised a free glass of milk.

If only there was some sort of electronic medium where you could read much more about the above as well as all the other shows coming to town…Well, there is. It’s at www.whatsonhighlands.com. Head there to fi nd out just why this could well be the best month ever for theatre in Inverness.

WED 25 SEP THE IDIOT AT THE WALL @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7.30pm. On a Hebridean island in the wake of WWI, Sorcha has returned to her family home. With her is Henry, a visitor from the south, who arrives to find the modern world encroaching upon a traditional way of life. Increasingly bewitched by Sorcha’s sister Odhran, he is challenged to consider the power of prophecy over reason. This show, which was a sell-out at last year’s Fringe, is both a retelling of a Celtic folk myth and an examination of the rich, intangible heritage of Scotland, its stories and songs.

THU 26 SEP MORGAN AND WEST - TIME TRAVELLING MAGICIANS @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7.30pm.

PIP UTTON IN ADOLF @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, 8pm. The 20th Century’s most notorious tyrant is daringly and divisively brought to the stage in a powerful solo work.

Miles soon finds himself embroiled in

their complex and intricate personal histories, as he uncovers a tragic past, riddled with guilt, secrecy,

heartbreak and loss. Healey’s script is both a gentle mismatch comedy and a many-layered play which won huge acclaim when it first opened in his native Canada.

This autumn he’s back on the road once again due to popular demand - still the same Jack, agonizing over the slightest of annoyances and misdemeanours of everyday life. The host of the long running Radio 4 show I’m Sorry I haven’t A Clue said he was returning to the road ‘as he wanted to spend less time with his family’.

THU 10 OCT BID STREET THEATRE FESTIVAL @ Inverness City Centre SCOTTISH OPERA: RODELINDA @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7.30pm. Against a backdrop of faded Baroque grandeur, a cast of very contemporary characters tells a compelling tale of tyranny, love and the corrupting nature of power. Director Chris Rolls and designer Oliver Townsend use their extensive theatrical expertise to capture the drama, and the elegance, of one of Handel’s most successful operas.

FRI 11 OCT RAPUNZEL @ Eden Court Empire, 7.30pm. The story of the parents forced to give up their child, the Witch who takes her from them, the woman the child becomes, and the Prince who discovers and rescues her. ANGUS - THE GRASS WEAVER @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7pm. In 1939 crofter Angus MacPhee was posted to Faroe during WWII. Whilst there he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was subsequently incarcerated for 50 years at Craig Dunain hospital in Inverness, for 43 of those years on no medication. To keep himself well during ceaseless years Angus would pull the grass from the grounds and weave it making coats, trousers and boots which are now in the Collection de l’Art Brutin Switzerland. Impressive production telling the extraordinary story.

MON 14 OCT THE BLAZIN’ VARIETY PERFORMANCE @ Phipps Hall Beauly, 8pm. Always the quickest night to sell out, your evening with Blazin’ Fiddles is somewhat unusual as you see them like you’ve never seen them before. Wigs, implants, makeup, costumes, songs – and most importantly, comedy – are mixed in with performances from the band.

FRI 18 OCT SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE INTERACTIVE @ Craigmonie Centre, 7.30pm. Part lecture, part demonstration and part performance, the company’s directors introduce the dancers and talk about how the work is made, the themes the choreographers used to create the dances, the costumes and music. The dancers perform sections of work from the current repertoire and talk about the life of a dancer and answer questions from the audience. The audience is also offered the opportunity to participate in an interactive warm up. A fantastic first taste of Ballet or a fascinating insight for the established ballet fan.

SUN 20 OCT TRANSLUNAR PARADISE @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7.30pm.

After his wife passes away, William escapes to a paradise of fantasy and past memories, a place far from the reality of his grief. the hit sell-out production of THE RAGGED TROUSERED PHILANTHROPISTS, Towns End Productions presents WE WILL BE FREE!, a new drama set in 1834 about the Tolpuddle Martyrs that follows the extraordinary true story of George and Betsy Loveless. He was a Methodist preacher and the leader of the six Dorsetshire farm labourers who were tried, convicted and condemned to harsh transportation by an oppressive Government for having the temerity to swear a secret oath and form a union to fight against a succession of wage cuts. This vitally important story is told using Andy Vine’s powerful political cartoons and animation; through puppetry and the exquisite musical arrangements by revered folk singer and squeezebox player John Kirkpatrick.

SUN 27–TUE 29 OCT 51 SHADES OF MAGGIE @ Eden Court Empire, 8pm A hilarious spoof of bestselling novel 50 Shades of Grey. Starring Leah MacRae from Gary Tank Commander, this new play full of naughty bits will have you laughing out loud. Join Maggie Muff and her friends on this (slightly filthy) journey of love, booze and whips! This is the perfect girly night out with your friends for the best night at the theatre you’ve had in ages... Suitability Warning: Deemed unsuitable for anyone under the age of 16.

MON 28 OCT THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7.30pm

A performance lecture about value. DANIEL BYE’s whistle-stop tour of bizarre facts and impassioned arguments is occasionally shambolic but always a joy to watch...and you get a free glass of milk.

WED 30 OCT THE TAILOR OF INVERNESS @ Eden Court OneTouch, 7.30pm. Matthew Zajac’s phenomenal play about his Polish father returns to Inverness for a rare one-off performance to coincide with the publication of his book of the story.

WED 30 & THU 31 OCT A CLOCKWORK ORANGE @ Eden Court Empire, 8pm. Directed by Alexandra Spencer-Jones. The breathtaking all-male version of A Clockwork Orange comes to Inverness following its successful season in London’s Soho Theatre, 3-month tour of Australia and its five-star, sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This electrifying and testosterone-filled physical theatre ‘horror show’ exquisitely captures and transcends the spirit of Anthony Burgess’ original literary masterpiece, 50 years on from its publication.

SAT 02 NOV DAVID HUGHES DANCE – AUTUMN TOUR 2013 @ Craigmonie Centre, 7.30pm

For fans of classical ballet, modern dance and storytelling… A historical journey of theatrical works inspired by Fokine, Perrot, Martha Graham and Shakespeare. David Hughes

Dance presents a new quadruple bill this autumn featuring Bob Cohan, Matthew Bourne, Cathy Marston and Tanja Liedtke in 4 works. SECOND COMING AND WINTER, AGAIN @ Eden Court OneTouch, 8pm Second Coming contains cavernous soundscapes and surprises as Victor Quijada takes urban dance to new theatrical territory. Heavily influenced by the Los Angeles street-dance culture he grew up in, Second Coming sets a world–acclaimed breaking style to a sample crazy turntablist soundtrack by DJ/composer Jasper Gahunia (AKA DJ Lil’ Jaz). Radical Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren mixes beautifully poised dance and a masterful stagecraft in Winter, Again. Set to breathtakingly delicate songs from Schubert’s Eine Winterreise, the piece will seduce your senses with the power of winter. Expect dark misdemeanours by innocent girls and frustrated men.

Nesting & RestingNest Futon Chair by Karup

Those of you who ever slept on a friend’s futon in the 80’s and woke up in agony the next morning will be glad to know that some clever people have taken a look at the whole chair/bed design and come up with something a little diff erent.

I don’t know how many interiors articles we have written that contain the words ‘designed in Denmark ‘, but it seems a lot. And this month I am telling you about the Nest Futon Chair, designed by a bunch of designers (you can see them below) from Karup in Denmark, they have come up with a comfortable ‘nest’ chair which easily unfolds to become a supportive semicircular mattress. You can join two together to make a circular bed too (see below).

Very stylish and modern but also comfortable and functional, it was winner of the “Best Product” at the Innovation Cup in 2009 and is constructed from a soft yet durable cotton/polyester twill with high quality foam and batting and it comes in a wide variety of contemporary fabric colours.

Hairtrends 2013/14: SplashlightsNew hair trends come and go with the seasons, so if your dip-dye is dying or your pastel streaks have faded, then you may want to try the latest colour trend to hit the runways - ‘Splashlights‘.

This technique was pioneered by infl uential US colourist Aura Friedman who is responsible for last year’s ubiquitous ombré look and many other trends in hair colour over the past few years.

Splashlights are a horizontal band of bleached hair that stretches from ear to ear ‒ Anna explained the style as “wanting to create the eff ect that a laser beam is hitting your hair at a certain spot”.

It’s an eff ect that involves painting bleach onto a small horizontal band of hair, starting with the undermost layers, then covering all the hair above and below the stripe with a colour close to your natural shade.

Though the initial trend is to contrast colour with a bleached stripe, you can have many variations. Instead of opting for blonde and a very light contrast colour, you can have a moderate colour, depending on your preference.

A big advantage to come with Splashlights is that it sits in the middle of your hair, so your hair can grow out almost fi ve to six inches without it looking like it needs a touch-up.

This could be a trendsetting hairstyle for those who want to stand out and try a bolder look for autumn.

The Kitchen Brasserie15 Huntly Street, Inverness 01463 259119The Kitchen BrasserieThe Kitchen Brasserie15 Huntly Street, Inverness 01463 259119

Back in 2007 we fi rst reviewed the recently opened Kitchen, whose elegant, modern building was one of the few constructions in recent years with any apparent sympathy for its surroundings, immediately establishing itself as a vibrant city landmark, photographed by tourists almost as much as the castle it overlooks. Or, technically, underlooks.

Back then the place was packed, proving instantly as popular as its sister establishment over the river, The Mustard Seed, and off ering a similar remarkably aff ordable set menu, the selling point that has made that restaurant so successful.

Economy doesn’t necessarily equal value though and back then The Kitchen seemed to lack real quality control, turning out dishes that were either unashamed demonstrations of how to work fi nancial margins (cheap cuts bulked with spuds/

pasta etc) or poorly executed attempts at “sophistication”. Our review of that lunch was hardly a ringing endorsement.

A lot has changed in six years though and now, renamed as The Kitchen Brasserie, the place is at the forefront of something of a restaurant empire with it and The Mustard Seed joined by four places in St Andrews and one in Stirling, all thriving. And, after our lunch, we could see just why.

It’s still, obviously, a beautiful building and, being so light and airy, a delightful place in which to eat, the open glass frontage and three fl oors meaning that there are distinctly diff erent atmospheres to each part, from social and bustling on the ground fl oor, to quieter and more intimate the higher up you go.

Ours was a prime table right by the window of the middle fl oor with

such fi ne views of the river and castle that even the empty prefab monstrosities that will continue to scar the city skyline until someone has the guts to obliterate them couldn’t detract from the sight of it all.

Outside the fi rst sense of encroaching autumn, so fi ttingly our food seemed to echo the seasonality, with its robust fl avours and earthy reassurance. My companion chose from the set menu (still a bargain at £6.95 for two courses), while I went for the a la carte, priced rather higher, but off ering an interesting selection ranging from pasta to meats and fi sh.

And, it became immediately obvious, skill and imagination in the actual cooking. My starter of Black Pudding ‘Bonbons’ had lovely presentation and taste to match, three crisp-coated balls of locally made pudding with 4545

a little melted nugget of Strathdon Blue cheese inside, set atop a garlicky mayonnaise and served on a black slate. Great balance of fl avours with the tang of the cheese cutting through the richness of the black pudding and a combination that might even persuade those foolishly squeamish about the concept to change their mind.

The presentation is just as impressive with the set menu options as my companion’s Bruschetta con Funghi proved. Served in a classy wide rimmed bowl, the mushrooms, garlic and onions in a cream sauce, on toasted French bread, fi nished with chopped parsley was pronounced top notch, even if it slightly stretched the precise Italian defi nition of Bruschetta.

My main was the perfect match for the encroaching autumn. Slow Braised Lamb Shank had been cooked in a Black Isle Porter Beer Sauce with Creamy Mashed Potato and Gremolata, Accompanied by a Selection of Roasted Root Vegetables. Simplicity was the key to its deliciousness, the tender meat falling off the bone.

My companion’s Pizza was a revelation and was something you’d pay more for elsewhere than they’re charging here for the two courses. Topped with peppers and courgette as well as homemade tomato sauce, it was thin and crispy, served on a lovely wooden platter and suggesting there’s a wood oven in the kitchen, or at least a chef who knows how to replicate a truly authentic Italian-style pizza, although again with ingredients that could possibly induce conniptions in that country’s purists.

Too many desserts in local restaurants appear to have come from some anonymous central hub, but here

they have a real individuality and attention to detail. So my Vanilla Panacotta had just the right degree of wobble and a gorgeous, creamy fl avour, while my companion’s Banoff ee Cheesecake was an exemplary twist on two traditional options. The slate was back as a serving plate, allowing the chef to unleash his artistic impulses on each with diff ering patterns made from tremendously zingy mango and raspberry purees.

Service throughout was excellent, with our waitress perfectly balancing friendliness and attentiveness while never being intrusive. No surprise then that the place was full, as it seems invariably to be.

As my companion noted, “everything about the restaurant felt professional and well delivered, from the impressive architecture that really saves that section of the riverside from anonymity and deserving recognition for the boldness of vision, to the warm welcome and well trained staff who seem happy in their work, the sign of a well run outfi t, giving a friendly atmosphere to the place.”

The Kitchen Brasserie is the fl agship of an empire that seems set to expand even further and, at last, tastes every bit as good as it looks.
