ICA Learner Mr. Prakash Bhandari’s Participation at 27th AAOU Conference

ICA, a member of Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), was invited to participate in the 27th annual AAOU Conference 2013 in Islamabad, Pakistan for paper presentation on various topics of open and distance learning. Mr. Prakash Bhandari, a learner of ICA, was selected by the ICA panel of abstract reviewers to represent ICA for paper submission. Mr. Bhandari participated in the conference and presented

The conference was attended by more than 250 international and local delegates comprising of Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, Presidents, scholars, senior administrators and policy makers representing the Open Universities in the Asia region and other ODL institutes and organizations from countries across Europe, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The conference was officially inaugurated by the Pakistan State Minister for Education, Training and Standards in Higher Education, Hon. Mr. Muhammad Baligh ur Rehman and the closing ceremony was graced by His Excellency, Mr. Mamnoon Hussain, President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

02 FAQsWho awards the degree and is it a recognised degree?

What is evaluation system?

IGNOU awards the Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates and are recognized by member universities of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). They are at par with Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates of all Indian Universities/Institutions. In Nepal it is recognised by TU and other universities. IGNOU courses offered through ICA is also approved by MOE, Nepal. Its program and qualification are recognised by academic/professional institutions and by industry and commerce. It is recognized in the entire Common Wealth Member countries. American colleges and universities have accepted its courses for credit transfer.

IGNOU has a multitier evaluation system.

1. Self-assessment exercises within each unit of study.

2. Continuous evaluation through tutor-marked assignments, practical assignments, seminar/workshops and extended contact programmes.

3. The term-end/final examination carry 70% weightage conducted in Jun and Dec.

4. Project Work: The evaluation of learners depend on their instructional activities. They have to submit Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) to the Study Centre in the prescribed format of the University before taking term-end examination. The TMAs carry 30% of the marks.

Induction Meetings

The 18th Induction Meeting for July 2013 Session for Management and Non-Management Programs were held on 3 Aug 2013. Similarly, a separate Induction Meeting was conducted for the learners of Computer Science on 3 Aug 2013. Related personnel of ICA gave detailed presentations on the academic programs and procedures; rules and regulations of IGNOU and ICA; and modalities of Distance Learning through ICA. An open session was held at the end of the program where learners further clarified their doubts and queries. Study Materials were also distributed to the learners. Few pass-out learners also shared their experiences during the meet.

Training on Communication Skills for ICA Administrative Staff

ICA conducted effective and proper Communications Skills Development training for its administrative staffs on 18th and 19th

July 2013. The training dealt with problems faced by participants while interacting with learners and other enquirers. It provided a better understanding in deaing with learners. The overall objective of the training was also to enhance the learner support system through effective communication.

ICA Team Building Program

From 6-8 Oct, 2013, 19 members of the ICA family went to the Boarderlands Resort, Bhote Koshi, to learn and improve team building skills which was provided by Mr. Megh Ale and Mr. Rupendra Maharjan from the Boarderlands Resort. The ICA members went through various team building games and tasks.

Mr. Ronit Rai has joined ICA as Officer Marketing. Mr. Rai is responsible for developing, executing and branding marketing strategy for ICA

Seminar on Case Study: Incredible India

On the occasion World Tourism Day, 28th September, 2013, Professor Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury, Chief Academic Consultant

of ICA, conducted a seminar on Tourism Marketing and Branding: Case of Incredible India. The participants, 23 learners and faculty members, were overwhelmed with presentations in the program. Experience, ethnicity, authenticity are the keywords of the world traveler in the current scenario. this program ignited the participants to find the loopholes in the existing tourism practice of Nepal and motivated them to capitalize the natural blessings of Nepal which includes all of these three flavors.

Guest lecture on Tourism Management and Marketing in Himalayas: Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim

On 26 October 2013, Chief Academic Consultant of ICA, Prof. Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury conducted a two-hour seminar on Destination Branding: POKHARA@2080 BS: Action-Plan: 2013-2014 AD/ 2070-71BS. Learners and the faculty participated in the program and showed overwhelming response for the comparative study among Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim presented in the program. The participants were surprised to know that Begnas Lake is better than the Geneva lake of Switzerland. The conclusion drawn from the presentation was that we need to develop brand image encouraging tourist arrival to Nepal and positioning the brand image in a meaningful way.

Guest Lecture Session: Effective Communication of Social Work & Development Initiatives

On 30 Nov, 2013, ICA organized a guest lecture session on “Effective Communication of Social Work and Development Initiatives.” The session was delivered by Prof. Ujjwal K. Chowdhury and participated by 37 learners and academic counselors of ICA. Effective use of media with the practical cases was the main highlight of this session. Examples such as HIV/AIDS campaign of Star group and the use of social issues in movies were presented in the session which also focused on various social issues changing the perception towards HIV/AIDS infected person.

Prof. M Aslam, the current VC of IGNOU, has a rich experience, both at the national and international levels in Rural Development; ICT, Communication and Extension; Distance and Continuing Education; Multi-Media in Distance Education; Training Methodology; Training Skills; University Administration; Monitoring and Evaluation; and Panchayati Raj and Social Change. He spent 8 years on international assignments and has 17 years of distance and open learning experience.

Academic Career: Prof. Aslam passed MA in Sociology with 1st Division and 2nd Position in 1973. He got his M. Phil. in 1975 and Ph.D. (Sociology) in 1978. Prof. Aslam is currently Professor, School of Continuing Education and ‘Project Leader’ for IGNOU-MOPR-UNDP project on ‘Capacity Building of PRIs through a Multimode Training Intervention’ being implemented in six states in India with IGNOU as the implementing agency.

Awards: As Director of Panchayati Raj Project, a Multi-Media Distance Education package was developed for the Panchayati Raj Functionaries. The package was introduced to 58,000 elected functionaries of the

Panchayats in 4 districts of Madhya Pradesh. This multimedia package has been conferred COL President’s Award of Excellence at PAN Commonwealth Forum in 1999.

Prof. Aslam completed the ADB/Price Waterhouse Project on “Strengthening Local Self-Governance in Madhya Pradesh”. A video produced under this Project “On the Threshold of 21stCentury” won the SONY International Award (1999).

Bangladesh Open University honoured Prof. Aslam with a special award in June, 2004 for successful completion of Panchayati Raj Project in India and its replication in Bangladesh.

Prof. Aslam was conferred ‘Professional Excellence Award’ of Mewat Development Society by the Union Minister for Panchayats in August, 2007.

Policy Work: Prof. Aslam was a UN expert at the International Seminar on Rural Development organised by UNESCO for Western Asia in Beirut in Dec, 2004. He was a member of the international group to prepare ‘The Global Strategic Plan for Democracy Education’ during the Pocantico Conference on Democracy Education organized by the Council for the Community of Democracies and the American Forum for Global Education in 2003. He chaired the Asian Group during the meeting.

He was a Resource Person and Panelist for ‘Global Solidarity for Strengthening and Expanding Democracy.’ held in Seoul, Korea on November 10-12, 2002.

A Session on “Brand Parenting” by Manosh Sengupta

A special guest lecture session on “Brand Parenting” was conducted by Mr. Manosh R. Sengupta on 28 Dec 2013 at ICA Management Block. Mr. Sengupta, a brand-activist, advises businesses keen in taking their brands to the next level. He is also one of the men behind the branding success of brands like Idea cellular, Tata, Wipro-Acer, to name a few.

The session was initiated with a brief introduction about Brand Knowledge and Positioning by Professor Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury (Chief Academic Consultant of ICA). Initially, Mr. Sengupta provided an insight that Brand is the most valuable asset of an enterprise. According to Mr. Sengupta, “brand is the cornerstone upon which organizations are built – it forms the most valuable asset of an enterprise; nurturing such entity requires the qualities of parents rather than that of Managers’ Therefore, Brand should be nurtured, nourished, and parented like human beings. There were 92 participants participated in the program which included ICA learners, faculties and corporate guests. With “If you collaborate, it happens” Mr. Sengupta shared that branding and positioning are not the sole issues of the marketing department. Every department should work for brand development as it is the core asset of an enterprise. Mr. Sengupta also clarified the fine line between Positioning and Proposition.

On Nov-29-2013, ICA organized a meeting at Hotel Himalaya, titled LEARNING TOGETHER: Initiating a Relationship.

A welcome speech was given by Chairman, Mr. Biswajit Mukherjee followed by a presentation conducted jointly by Prof. Ujjwal K Chowdhury, Chief Academic Consultant (ICA) and the CEO explaining the benefit of signing MOU with ICA as a Knowledge Partner. ICA’s documentary was also premiered in the program.

Altogether 28 guests participated in the program. Guests representing particular organizations were of higher authorities like Head HR (Human Resource), Head Marketing, and Senior Managers. The CEO of National Insurance Corporation, Dr. Pronab Sen; Head HR of Everest Bank, Kumar Joshi; Vice Chairperson of Sipradi Trading, Rajan Shrestha; Deputy General Manager of Mega Bank, Raveena Deshraj Shrestha were some of the guests. All the guests participated in the interaction session and showed overwhelming response for the information provided and appreciated the unique initiative of ICA to develop relationship with a vision of Knowledge Partner. The program was effective as almost all the guests acknowledged that ICA is a suitable portfolio to those individuals looking forward to work and study at the same time.

Guest Lecture Session: Solving Case Studies

On 23 Nov 2013, International Center for Academics (ICA), PI: 9602 organized a guest lecture session on “Solving Case Studies”. Session was delivered by Mr. Rojan Baniya (Assistant Professor, Kathmandu University School of Management and Academic Counselor, ICA). The session was participated by 51 learners of management program from 1st to last semester. In this session, Mr. Baniya presented best approach to solve a case study, avoiding common mistakes while solving a case study and time management. The session was effective as almost all the learners acknowledged that the materials presented in the session was very good and would be beneficial from the exam point of view too.

AISECT University honors ICA Academic Counselor

Dr. Chandra Kanth Poudel, Sr. Academic Counselor at ICA (Management Faculty) has been honored as Prof. Emeritus by AISECT University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Dr. Poudel, a Ph.d. in Economics, graduated in Law, Education and Arts from T.U. He has been contributing to the Education Sector for over two decades. His contribution was recognized by the first India Nepal Friendship Association on 1st Aug 2013 and was felicitated by H. E. Shri Jayanta Prasad, former ambassador of India to Nepal.
