The goddess SARASWATI is said to be the presiding deity of the twin arts of MUSIC and LITERATURE. These are also known as the twin arts of verbal and non-verbal knowledge. The VEENA represents the non-verbal and the BOOKS represents the verbal aspects. The essence of music was ascribed to Gods and Goddesses, to SARASWATI,to NARADA, etc.

Spirituality thus forms a rather important part of Indian music.

Music has close connection with spirituality. Spiritual music like O PALANHARE has the capacity to enlighten our mind and inspires us to dive deep within. The most profound spirituality involves peace and silence. But to enter this realm of peace and silence it is quite practical to take the benefit of spiritual, soulful music.“Only morality in our actions can give beauty and dignity for

People claim that the rishi Narada introduced the art of music to our planet. The origin of Indian music can be traced back to Vedic days. It is said that the sound that pervades the whole universe represents the divinity. Organized Indian music owes its origin to the Samaveda. The Veda has all the seven notes of the raga karaharpriya in the descending order. The earliest raga is speculated to be Sama Raga. In due course people explained how the original sound 'Om' gave rise to the various notes.

“To Have Faith In God Should Be The Easiest Thing In The World, Yet It Appears To Be The Most Difficult.”

It is understanding that Indian raga music was at one time entirely spiritual, and is a highly-developed technology for entraining consciousness into the higher realms. However, it has became somewhat debased over the centuries and some of its performance appeals to the lower nafs. The music of India is one of the oldest unbroken musical traditions in the world. The origin of Indian classical music goes back to the Vedic times, when the Rishi (Hindu saints), deep in meditation, would contemplate different sound vibrations and tonal patterns and the effects it has on consciousness. In later times, temple priests would chant Vedic shlokas (verses) to certain ragas (melodic modes) in the temples.

“All human activity is or should be directed towards the realization of the self and in this self-realization lies hidden god-

realization.”

Indian music is a living thing. There is a loose structure for the musicians to follow and the rest is improvised in the moment. Thus the performance is a more of a creation that creates an experience of presence and meditation for the listener. Thus Indian music is more of a spiritual experience rather than just mere entertainment for the enjoyment of the senses. If music is completely based on spirituality with a root deep meaning of an supreme god, it is nothing but takes an individual deeply within his/her conciousness to realize that actually god is within our soul. Music just creates a strong relationship with divinity and so Indian music has its origin in spirituality.
