1) Simplify
• Add in a 1 in front of ( ) or variables if needed
• Rewrite in terms of addition
• Use distributive property to remove parentheses
• Combine like terms
2) Isolate the variable
• Move all the terms with a variable to one side of
the equation and all the constants to the other
side
3) Simplify all Fractions
Objective: TSWBAT solve multistep EQs involving the dist. prop. by using algebra steps correctly. Date __10/24/19_____
Ex. 1: 2(3x – 4) = 10
6x +8
6x =
6 61x = 3
2(3x + -4) = 10
+ -8 = 10 +8

x = 3
Ex. 2: 20 = 4(2n + 7)
8n -28 -28
+ 28 20 =
= 8n 8 8
-1 = 1x
-8
-1 = x
Ex. 3: -3y – 8 + (-2y) = -28
-3y + (-8) + (-2y) = -28
-5y + (-8) = -28+8 +8
-5y = -20-5 -5

33) -4(m + 3) = 24
34) -8(y + 9) = -40
6) 2v + 7 = 3
7) 4b + 3 = -9
9) -6t – 7 = 17
12) 2t – 5 = -10
-8y -72 -72

On your slate, please
write the mistake that
Mrs. Thompson made
and explain what she
should do instead to
get the right answer.
Then, find the right
answer!

Objective: TSWBAT solve multistep EQs involving the dist. prop. by using algebra steps correctly. Date __10/24/19_____
Ex. 1: 2(3x – 4) = 10
6x +8
6x =
6 61x = 3
2(3x + -4) = 10
+ -8 = 10
Draw a line at the equal sign
to show the two sides of the
equation.
+8 We want the -8 to go
away, so we combine it
with a positive 8 so
they cancel out and
make zero!
Now we have a 6x
leftover on one side
and an 18 leftover on
the other side.
Solve it for 1x!
Whatever you do to one
side, do to the other!
18
x = 3
Ex. 2: 20 = 4(2n + 7)
8n -28 -28
+ 28 20 =
= 8n 8 8
-1 = 1x
Now we have a 8n
leftover on one side
and a -8 leftover on the
other side.
Remember…division
will help you figure out
what times 8 makes
-8!
We have a 20
and a -28, so
diff. signs =
subtract!
-8
-1 = x
Ex. 3: -3y – 8 + (-2y) = -28
-3y + (-8) + (-2y) = -28
-5y + (-8) = -28We want the negative 8
to go away, so we
combine it with a
positive 8 so they
cancel out and make
zero!
+8 +8
-5y = -20
Now we have a
-5y leftover on
one side and a
-20 leftover on
the other side.
Remember…
division will
help you figure
out what times
-5 makes -20!
-5 -5
1y
y = 4
= 4
Slates 1: -3(2r – 6) = 6
-6r -18 -18
-3(2r + -6) = 6
+ 18 = 6
-6r =
-6 -6
1r = 2
Now we have a -6r
leftover on one side
and a -12 leftover on
the other side.
Remember…division
will help you figure out
what times -6 makes
-12!
We have a 6 and a -18, so
diff. signs = subtract!
-12
r = 2
-2( x – 3) = -30
-2x
-2(1x + -3) = -30
+ 6 = -30
1
-6
-2x =-2 -2
1x
-6 We want the positive 6
to go away, so we
combine it with a
negative 6 so they
cancel out and make
zero!
Now we have a -2x
leftover on one side and
an -36 leftover on the
other side.
Remember…division will
help you figure out what
times -2 makes -36!
We have a -30 and a -6, so
same signs = add!
-36
x = 18

1) Suzanne thinks the two expressions 2(3a – 2) + 4a and
10a – 2 are equivalent. Is she correct? Explain why or
why not using words and math.
2(3a – 2) + 4a
2(3a + -2) + 4a
6a + -4 + 4a
10a + -4
10a – 2
10a + -2
NOT the same!
No, the two expressions are not equivalent because after we
use the distributive property and combining like terms we do
not get the same expression as 10a – 2.
