iBook Location Manager

• Apple’s “Location Manager” can simplify network settings when an iBook is used at different locations.

• “Location Manager” is found in the “Apple Menu”, “Control Panels”.

• Apple’s “Help Menu” is a source of information and troubleshooting. Use it while the “Locations Manager” window is active, or when in the “Finder”, or with no applications active.

Configuring Location Manager

• Creating three locations will be shown in this presentation– Airport or wireless settings– Ethernet network settings for most schools– Modem settings for a LAUSDnet account

• Over 50 steps are involved in this one time process

Configuring Location Manager

Before the Location Manager can be set, a few other settings need to be created:• AppleTalk (Airport, School Network, LAUSDnet Modem)• TCP/IP (Airport, School Network, LAUSDnet Modem)• Airport (Airport)• Remote Access (LAUSDnet Modem)• Modem (LAUSDnet)• Location Manager (Airport, School Network, LAUSDnet

Modem and Startup Preferences)

Configuring AppleTalk AppleTalk (Airport, School Network, LAUSDnet Modem)

• Go to the “Apple” menu

• Go to “Control Panels”

• Release on “AppleTalk”

• Go to “File” open “AppleTalk”

• Release on “Configurations”

• Click on “Default”

• Select “Duplicate”• Rename the copy “Airport”. • Make another duplicate• Rename the copy “School Network”• Close the “AppleTalk” window• Make another duplicate• Rename the copy “LAUSDnet Modem”• Save Changes

• TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol Internet Protocol)

• Go to “Apple Menu”, “Control Panels”

• Release on “TCP/IP”

• Under the “File” menu, release on “Configurations”

• Set “Name Server Address” to192.215.166.34 (then “Return”)192.215.16.9

• In the Apple Menu, Control Panel, release on Modem.

• It should read “Apple Internal 56.6K Modem”

• Go to the “File” Menu

• Release on “Configurations”

• Select “Duplicate”

• Rename the account “LAUSDnet”

• Select “Done”

• Close the window

• Go to “Apple Menu”, “Control Panels”, “Remote Access”

• Go to “File”, “Configurations”

• Click on “Configurations”

• Duplicate the “Default” setting

• Rename the “Default copy” to“LAUSDnet Modem”

• Make “LAUSDnet Modem” active• Click on the small triangle “Setup”• Click on “Registered User”• In the “Name” type your login name

example: “rromer”• In “Password” type your password.• Click “Remember Password”, if you want• In number, type one of the LAUSDnet phone

numbers listed on the next slide.

Airport Settings - Activate

• From the “Apple Menu” release on “Airport”

• Turn Airport “on”.

• If an Airport is nearby, the signal strength bar will indicate its strength.

• An Airport may have a customized setup for security reasons.

• Try the “Airport Network” pulldown menu to see if a special setup has been made.– Ask for a password, if one is required.

Getting Connected

• The following three pages shows how to connect with an Airport, School Network, and LAUSDnet modem.

• This can be done without “Location Manager”.

• These pages show a way of checking to see if Location Manger settings are correct.

Getting Connected Airport Settings

• To have the Airport work properly the following settings should be operating:

• Airport is On and Connected showing status bar.

• TCP/IP should be connected as “Airport”

• AppleTalk should be connected as “Airport”

Getting Connected School Network Settings

To have the “School Network” operational:• AppleTalk is set to “Builtin Ethernet”• TCP/IP is set to “Ethernet”• A Category5 cable connects the iBook to a

network.• The TCP/IP settings show a school address. This

usually begins with 10.xxx.xxx.xxx• If 169.xxx.xxx.xxx appears, there is no

connection.

Getting ConnectedLAUSDnet Modem

• LAUSDnet Modem settings are operational when:• AppleTalk is “Remote Only”• TCP/IP is:

– Connect via “PPP”

– Configure “PPP Server”

• Remote Access has “User Name”, “Password”, and “phone number” correct

• Modem is “56.6 Apple Internal Modem”
