Give capacity planners a comprehensive

view of IT for more cost-effective IT service

For many businesses, average IT infra-

structure resource utilization is low, even

though many large companies have

capacity management tools, experts

and organizations in place. The issue is

particularly acute for application servers,

which have a low average CPU utiliza-

tion. Despite such low resource utilization,

many organizations suffer application

outages and service degradation when

the demand on critical infrastructure

components exceeds their capacity.

The reasons for this paradoxical situa-

tion? Rapid changes are often made

to the infrastructure to solve availability

problems or to add new application

functionality. These changes tend to be

made on a project-by-project basis,

without going through a formal, business-

driven capacity planning process.

Although capacity planners may

have reliable capacity estimation tools,

Make capacity management a core part of

your IBM Service Management strategy

Based on the concept of a “capacity

management request” (CMR), Tivoli

Capacity Process Manager brings

all aspects of capacity management

under management control, so you

have fewer capacity-related business

Tivoli Capacity Process Manager integrates with Tivoli Change and Configuration Management Database and is a part of the IBM Service Management foundation.

manager integrates with change and

release management processes linked

to Tivoli CCMDB, which federates IT

information from across your enterprise.

When you install Tivoli Capacity Process

Manager with your existing IBM Service

Management foundation, you receive the

following set of components:

tools — establishing a disciplined

approach to using capacity planning

tools regularly and in a repeatable

pattern. By putting the right tools and

experts back in the loop, capacity

planning becomes a rigorously

enforced predecessor to every infra-

structure change.

Tivoli Capacity Process Manager is part

of the IBM Service Management foun-

dation, based on best practices and

supporting IT Infrastructure Library®

(ITIL®)–based processes. Fully inte-

grated with IBM Tivoli Change and

Configuration Management Database

(CCMDB), IBM Tivoli process manage-

ment products are designed to work

with your existing operational manage-

ment products (OMPs) to support

IBM Service Management, which

aligns your IT functions with your

business objectives.

Leverage a customizable capacity

management process tool with

rich functionality

Designed to be used in conjunc-

tion with an existing IBM Service

Management implementation, Tivoli

Capacity Process Manager provides

a formal way to gather data, analyze,

model and approve all capacity

management activities. The process

Page 3: IBM Tivoli Capacity Process Manager - Boston Tech · Lacking a comprehensive overview of the entire infrastructure, organizations often dedicate too few resources, which causes performance

service outages and better overall

resource utilization. Automating work-

flows for multiple types of capacity

management requests, the software

supports a process model that can be

based on ITIL, Tivoli Unified Process

or other frameworks. You can also

use Tivoli Unified Process to map ITIL

best practices to actionable process

implementations.

By using Tivoli Capacity Process

Manager to implement, enforce and

track all capacity management activi-

ties, you can avoid potentially wasteful

or insufficient upgrades and changes

to your infrastructure. The process

manager uses three critical steps to

enable this capability:

• Allworkrequeststhatcouldpotentiallyleadto

aninfrastructureupgradearecaptured.

• Datarelatedtobothbusinessrequirements

• Multipletoolsareintegratedintoonemanage-

mentprocessflowtoenableeffective,productive

handlingofallcapacitymanagementrequests.

Use templates to speed common processes

The process manager task flow

includes two major customizable

templates that cover the most common

capacity management processes:

sizing new applications and monitoring

existing applications.

Sizing a new application

This template helps you size new busi-

ness applications in a timely fashion so

that the right infrastructure capacity is

available to meet your business needs

once an application goes live. The

process begins when an application

development manager or other devel-

opment representative submits a CMR.

Once the CMR is received, it is routed

to a capacity management coordinator

for review and acceptance. Then, the

CMR is routed to appropriate functional

areas, based on the workload profile.

Each specialist answers an application-

dependent set of questions about key

application characteristics. Using this

information, you can create a complete

profile of the planned application,

Tivoli Capacity Process Manager captures capacity management requests, to help keep critical planning activities from being missed.

Monitoring an existing application

This template helps you manage

capacity of existing applications and

services. CMRs may originate from

external inputs — such as a manager

who wants to review an application —

or from other IT service management

processes.

For example, if the availability process

manager determines that the root cause

of an issue might be capacity, it will

generate a CMR so the situation will be

investigated. After the CMR is created,

the capacity manager assesses the

request and routes it to an appropriate

expert. Then, the request is assigned to

the relevant workload template, which

contains details of the performance and

capacity metrics for the application.
