Brief History

April, 2001 IBM acquired Informix for $1B

Informix had strong portfolio of database servers, business intelligence products, application development tools and DataBlades

IBM bought it for the customer base/market share and the technology

First sales challenge will be to answer the question “Will IBM support Informix/IDS long term”

IBM Strategy for IDS

Strategy for Informix IDS is "Retain & Grow" Retain current Informix customers as IBM customers

Grow revenue by upgrading customers to IDS 9.4

Grow revenue by selling Informix customers other IBM SW, HW and Services

Introduce DB2 UDB as a viable database platform for future applications

Long Term Strategy Continue to ship IDS 9.x as long as customers require

IDS 7.3 is End Of Market 4/15/05 and End Of Support 4/15/06

Over next 10 yrs develop DB2 as the lead database that will meet IDS customer needs and allow for an easy migration

database server designed for Enterprise and Workgroup computing High performance OLTP via parallel everything architecture (Dynamic Scalable

Architecture) Known for Extensibility, Reliability, Availability, Advanced Replication

Functionality Available on a wide variety of HW/OS platforms IDS 7 and IDS 9 were previously positioned as complementary products, not as

a natural upgrade/migration path

• IDS7 focused on OLTP; IDS 9 focused on object relational technology

IDS 9.4 is the first release to combine the best of IDS 7 with the benefits of IDS 9

Big Chunks

How big is 128PB?• VERY BIG!

• If we used 180GB drives, it would take approximately 716,800 drives.

• If we stacked them all on top of each other, we would have a tower about 11 miles tall.

• If we stacked them 10 high, we would need over 3 acres of floor space.

• At current prices, it would cost about $3B to buy the disks … before mirroring or RAID is added in

• At a load rate of 100MB/sec, it would take nearly 40 years of constant, uninterrupted streaming.

IDS for Linux on zSeries

IBM Informix 9.40 is the first IBM database engine to fully exploit the large memory, 64-bit capabilities of the Linux kernel on the zSeries, and provides an excellent upgrade path for our Linux customers needing a high-performance, Internet-scalable data management system

Fully implemented 64-bit architectures, such as zSeries result in improved performance, ease of use, and the ability to handle larger problems more easily.

Target Market is existing IDS customers, especially those already on Linux or non supported SW platforms

Main value propositions are Benefits of upgrading from IDS 7 to 9.4

Hardware Consolidation

Possible OS updates

Use existing skill sets (IDS), no need to migrate to Oracle

Why is IDS still better than the competition!

IDS runs applications with less hardware than the competition!

“For every dollar spent on off-the-shelf software made by Oracle in the 1990s, a customer could pay as much as 10 times more in installation and customization costs, former Oracle President Ray Lane said.” from an article on news.com (July 2001)

No expensive ‘add-ons’. Everything you need to run IDS is included in one server price.

• Partitioning, Spatial, Replication, Availability, Developer’s Kit, Web Administration, and more

Rapidly deploy new applications in the development environment of choice, whether 4GL, ESQL/C, or Java!

Operate IDS databases with fewer DBAs than the competition (2-1, or 3-1 ratio are not uncommon among users of both IDS)

Why IBM over Oracle or Microsoft?

IBM became the leading database vendor in new license revenue in 2001 & 2002 with a total of 34.6 percent market share, overtaking Oracle.

IBM also continued its momentum in the Unix & Windows markets, experiencing double digit growth in 2001.

Microsoft has limited capabilities in heterogeneous database and platform environments; limits your computing platform choice

Microsoft supports only Windows

IDS & IBM support wide array of OS and HW platforms including Windows 2000 and XP, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Linux, AIX and zSeries

many tools for heterogeneous data access from multiple data sources Support for Open Standards - Microsoft tries to drive internal standards as

industry standards; IBM supports open standards Service & Support – while Microsoft provides support through 3rd parties and

alliances, IBM provides award winning support through an extensive, well trained organization

Oracle – expensive

• Needed a competitive advantage afforded through a sophisticated, quantitative analysis system.

• Needed to search and analyze both realtime and historical data to spot trends identified by quantitative models.

• Needed the solution for equities research, arbitrage and hedging analytics, and regulatory compliance requirements.

• Needed a viable alternative to its UNIX-based Sun Solaris operating environment to meet budget requirements.

• “IDS 9.4 on RedHat Linux 7.2 has helped to increase revenue and improve risk management functions.”

• “Linux is less expensive to purchase and maintain than UNIX-based servers, and IDS 9.4 optimizes solution performance on Intel-based servers.”

Save Disk Space!

New and larger disk drives are going beyond the limits of IDS 9.30 and prior versions

Previous limitations would only allow you to use up to 14GB per disk drive (7 chunks per drive with 2GB limit)

With the removal of the chunk limitation, you can fully utilize drives greater that 14GB!

SMB can also get value from this scalability feature!

Other ER and HDR Improvements

HDR now supports extensible data types

• Replicates logged smart blob spaces

• Logged smart-large-objects (BLOB and CLOB)

• BOOLEAN

• LVARCHAR

• Complex types: row types, collections (list, set, etc.)

ER now supports extensible data types ER has faster queue recovery Uses the dynamic logs feature of IDS 9.30 Can handle large transactions (up to 4TB file size)!

Encrypted Communications

Previously, password encryption using CSS/CSM technology Now (optionally) using CSS/CSM to encrypt all conversations

from client to server• Using cryptography libraries from OpenSSL

• Not using OpenSSL directly because of design of ASF Optionally encrypt ER traffic

• Often sent over long-haul networks

• Protects data sent over Internet

• Not available for HDR in initial release Can also disable all other connections into DB.

Migration Considerations

New Reserved Words have been added (COLLATION, CROSS, FULL, INSTEAD, RESTART, RIGHT)

Migrating from prior versions of Informix Dynamic Server

IDS 7.24, 7.31, 9.14, 9.21, and 9.3 upgrade directly to IDS 9.4

IDS 7.22, and 7.30 require an interim upgrade to IDS 7.31

All other migrations will require dbexport/import

Migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit uses same process

Migrating to a different Operating System requires Export/Import

IBM & Lawson pledge continued support of IDS & DB2 UDB customers

Lawson will support for IDS 9.4 on Lawson’s 7.3.3 and 8.0.X environment releases until their end of life. No announced end of life dates for these products.

Lawson’s future 8.1 Environment release will not support IDS. No announced availability date for this product.

Lawson is encouraging customers to consider DB2 UDB as the database to migrate to: "As IBM's stated direction is to integrate the best function of Informix into its DB2 database, Lawson’s support of DB2 will continue to provide you with most or all of the Informix function, and Lawson encourages you to consider migrating to DB2 over the coming years."

Lawson is working very closely with IBM and our mutual customers to ensure full support and ample time to align with both IBM’s and Lawson’s future product roadmaps. Lawson customers on IDS will have IBM’s full support in making a smooth transition to DB2 UDB.
