  • Related Information2 IBM Maximo Data Loader: Users Guide

  • xIBM Maximo Data Loader is a tool that loads any Maximo database table through the Maximo application. The database table must be represented by a Maximo business object (MBO).

By loading data through the Maximo application instead of directly into the database, data is validated against the application business rules, including any client specific rules. Therefore only valid data is loaded.

IBM Maximo Data Loader installation creates two additional applications in the Configuration module: Data Loader and JDBC Configuration.

The IBM Maximo Data Loader application is used to define the MBO to load and the details of the load. The JDBC Configuration application is where you configure a JDBC connection to an external data source.

IBM Maximo Data Loader can run in parallel mode on BEA WebLogic which significantly decreases the load times when appropriate hardware resources are available. If you expect to run multiple loads simultaneously, consider clustered servers and multiple Maximo instances.

To run IBM Maximo Data Loader in parallel mode a JMS (Java Message Service) must be configured before using IBM Maximo Data Loader. The IBM Maximo Data Loader for WebLogic installation guide provides installation steps for installing in both parallel and normal modes.

WebSphere can run parallel without additional configuration.

Use this link to view and download documents attached to this application. You can download error or log files or you can upload delimited text files to the Maximo server for processing.

Refer to the IBM Maximo Users Guide for details on using the attached documents feature.

    MBO Name - Required

The name of the MBO to be loaded. Click Select Value to display a list of valid values.

    Parent MBO Name - Optional/Required

The name of the parent of the MBO to be loaded. This field is required to load an MBO that can only exist if its parent is identified. For example, a POLINE cannot exist without a PO.

    Primary Key - Read Only

The names of the attributes that make up the parent MBOs primary key. If there is more than one attribute in the primary key, the attribute names are separated by a comma. Any child loads must contain the primary key attributes or an error occurs when you try to load the parent.

    Load Details Frame

The Load Details frame of the Data Loader tab contains the following attributes.

    Log Directory - Required

The folder to which the load configuration error and log files are written. The folder must exist on the same server as the Maximo application.

    Load Manner - Required

The way IBM Maximo Data Loader loads data into Maximo. Click Select Value to display a list of valid values. The following are valid values.6 IBM Maximo Data Loader: Users Guide

  • Data Loader TabINSERT

Creates new records. If the data being loaded already exists in Maximo, a duplicate key error is generated.

    INSERTUPDATE

Creates new records or, if the data being loaded already exists in Maximo, the data is updated. Use this value when the load file contains more new records than existing records.

    UPDATE

Updates the records. If the data being loaded does not exist in Maximo, a record not found error is generated.

    UPDATEINSERT

Updates records or, if the data being loaded does not exist in Maximo, new records are created. Use this value when the load file contains more existing records than new records.

NOTE When using INSERTUPDATE, UPDATE, or UPDATEINSERT, ensure all attributes that make up the primary key of the MBO are defined either in the data to be loaded or specified using attribute defaults. However some MBOs are sensitive about using default values for primary keys.

    Read Count - Required

The number of records from the data source placed onto the input queue at a time. When used with the Read Interval attribute, the number of records on the queue can be limited to a level that does not overwork the hardware resources. The default value of 0 means that all of the source data is placed immediately on the queue at the beginning of the data load.

IBM Maximo Data Loader uses an internal queue to hold data to be loaded. The data is moved from the queue and is loaded into the Maximo database through the MBO.

    Read Interval - Required

The number of seconds between each load of the Read Count input records onto the internal queue.

Text File Name - Required when Load Type = TEXT

The name of the input text file containing the data to be loaded into Maximo. The input text file must be on the server where Maximo is installed.

    Export File Name - Optional

The path and name of the export file.

JDBC Source - Required when Load Type = JDBC

The name of the JDBC configuration record used to connect to the remote data source. Click Select Value to display a list of valid values.Data Loader Application 7

  • Data Loader TabSee Chapter 3 for information on creating JDBC configuration records.

    Load Type - Required

The type of the load configuration. Click Select Value to display a list of valid values. Valid values are TEXT or JDBC.

    Date Format - Optional

The format for loading dates into Maximo. Click Select Value to display a list of valid values.

Refer to the IBM Maximo Data Loader Installation Guide for instructions on expanding the list of date formats.

    Time Format - Optional

The format for loading time into Maximo. Click Select Value to display a list of valid values.

    Simulation? - Optional

If selected, the data loading process runs including MBO validation but data is not written to the database.

    Trim Whitespace? - Optional

If selected, any leading and trailing white space in a data field is removed before writing the data to the Maximo database.

Delimiter - Required when Load Type = TEXT

The character used to delimit values in the input text file.

JDBC SQL - Required when Load Type = JDBC

The SQL query used to retrieve data from the JDBC data source. The data returned from this query must contain attribute data exactly matching its equivalent in the MBO to be loaded. The match is case sensitive.

    Object Attributes Frame

The Object Attributes frame contains the attributes of the MBO entered in the MBO Name attribute. The Object Attributes frame of the Data Loader tab contains the following attributes.

    Attribute Name - Read Only

The name of the MBO attribute. 8 IBM Maximo Data Loader: Users Guide

  • Select Action MenuIs Primary Key? - Read Only

If selected, this attribute is part of the MBOs primary key.

    Update? - Optional

If selected, this attribute is updated when the Load Manner is set to UPDATE, UPDATEINSERT or INSERTUPATE.

    Order - Optional

The order the attribute is set in the MBO. The value must be unique within this configuration.

If the attribute order is not defined, the MBO attributes are loaded in the order defined in Database Configuration.

Some MBO attribute validations expect other attributes to be set. For example, when checking that an end date is after the start date, the start date must be set before the end date.

If the attribute order in Load Configuration is incorrect then the MBO will not successfully load. The order must be determined by reviewing and replicating the order data is entered through Maximo applications.

    Default - Optional

When no value is provided from the input data for this attribute, the value defined here applies to all records loaded.

    Export? - Optional

If selected, this attribute is exported.

    Export QBE - Optional

The QBE applied to the attribute for export.

    Select Action Menu

    Perform Data Load Option

The Perform Data Load option under the Select Action menu is used to load data into the Maximo database.

The progress of the load displays in the View status dialog box.Data Loader Application 9

  • Select Action MenuThe View status dialog box has the following attributes.

    Revision ID - Read Only

The number of times this load configuration record has been executed, including simulations.

    Close

    Closes the dialog box.

    Simulation Load

To run a load process without updating the database, make sure the Simulation? check box is selected in the Load Details frame of the Data Loader tab. You can check for errors before the data is actually loaded into the database. Error and log files are written to the file specified in the Log Directory attribute.

NOTE Not all errors are identified during a simulation load. Some validations are not performed until the data is committed to the database.

    Actual Data Load

To run a load process to update the database, make sure the Simulation? check box is not selected in the Load Details frame of the Data Loader tab. If you are running a load that inserts records, check the row count of the appropriate database table before you run the load so you can compare the row count after the load. The difference in the row count should match the number of successfully loaded rows as reported in the log file.

Error and log files are written to the file specified in the Log Directory attribute.

    View History Option

The View History option under the Select Action menu is used to view details of all data loads done using the current load configuration.

  • xError and log files are created at the end of every data load. The files are written to the folder specified in the Log Directory attribute on the Data Loader tab.

Each line of the error file has the input data plus the data loader error appended as an extra attribute. This attribute is called MDL_ERROR. The MDL_ERROR attribute contains the actual error reported by Maximo.

You can correct the errors in the error file and rerun the load configuration using the error file instead of the original data source. IBM Maximo Data Loader ignores the MDL_ERROR information so you do not need to remove that information. However, any attributes in the error file that are not part of the MBO being loaded will produce the 'Cannot Insert' error.
