Welcome to Wiesbaden!

It is my honor and pleasure to welcome you all to the IBM IMS Technical Symposium in Wiesbaden, Germany. I am very happy not only to join the IMS organization but also to have this opportunity to begin my time as IMS Director meeting with key IMS clients like you.

I have strong roots with IBM System z, and early in my career I did Assembler Language program for IBM Transaction Processing Facility (TPF). Technologically, we speak the same language.

Over the next 4 days, I am looking forward to meeting with you and working with our worldwide IMS team as they bring you the most up-to-date news on IMS Database, IMS Transaction Manager, IMS Tools, our integration successes, our strategic direction, and more. The IMS Ecosystem continues to grow, and at this Symposium we have more to share with you in terms of integration, education, and client presentations. Our agenda this year covers even more territory, and as usual, we are bringing you the best subject matter experts and your favorite IMS speakers.

I will be giving the opening keynote, and like you, I am looking forward to the keynotes to be delivered by Betty Patterson, Chief IMS Architect, Tom Ramey, IMS Tools Director, Nick Griffin, IMS Sales Advisory, and Mark Simmonds, IBM Big Data and System z evangelist. At the Expo, you’ll be able to see the latest solutions for IMS, including demos from our technical experts from IMS Tools, Guardium, Rocket, and Fundi, as well as options for IMS Education.

I thank you all for joining us at this important event and look forward to meeting with you and learning how IMS makes a difference to you and your business. If there is anything I or the worldwide IMS team can do to make this conference more valuable to you, please let any of us know.

When I was named IMS Director just a few weeks ago, I was told that IMS is more than a software product: It’s a Family. I look forward to spending this valuable time with the IMS Family in Germany.

Thank you, and Vielen Dank!

In a technological era in which the critical nature of Enterprise IT is sometimes overlooked due to the hyperbole around social messaging volumes, this mile-stone reminds us that our clients’ data, and everything it represents, is the infrastructure upon which your business is built.

A History of Leadership

April 23, 1987. IBM Santa Teresa Lab, San Jose, California. A single IMS system is benchmarked at 1012 TPS. The project, code named ONEKAY, was known only to the IMS Performance team at the lab and a few engineers across IBM who made improvements to their products so this mainframe milestone could be achieved. Why a secret? It was not supposed to happen. IMS was a 20-year old product intending to reclaim its greatness at a time when the industry was becoming enamored with enterprise relational database systems (RDBMS), this despite the fact that the benchmark for an SQL database in 1987 topped out at 208 TPS, roughly one-fifth of the IMS benchmark ...
