IBM DS3500/DCS3700 Disaster Recovery Option Efficient data replication and disaster recovery protection

Highlights• Disaster recovery—Maintain access

to critical data in the event of storage subsystem or site-wide outage, for both FC and Ethernet deployments

• Easy data migration and distribution—Efficiently move data from one IBM DS3500/DCS3700 location to another, or to DS4000/DS5000 subsystems with remote mirroring enabled

• Host-independent—Provide data replication and disaster recovery protection for multiple hosts to meet multiple application SLAs

• Leverage existing IP infrastructures—Over existing Ethernet infrastructure, asynchronous replication can offer protection against storage subsystem failures or site disasters

The IBM DS3500/DCS3700 Disaster Recovery Option delivers simpli-fied data replication and disaster recovery services, through remote mirroring, in the event of subsystem failure. Whether the replication is localized within a datacenter or across geographic locations, the Disaster Recovery Option streamlines the management of data replication and allows you to meet the application service levels for both virtual and traditional environments, for either FC or IP (Ethernet) deployments.

The ChallengeStorage system downtime caused by natural or man-made disasters can cost businesses tremendous amounts of lost productivity, revenue, and result in the loss of valuable data. In today’s 24 hour business world a disaster recovery solution is required for most enterprises.

The SolutionThe Disaster Recovery Option includes Enhanced Remote Mirroring (ERM) and Enhanced Global Mirroring (EGM) and efficiently replicates data between IBM DS3500/DCS3700 storage subsystems to ensure your information is protected from both system and site failures. Mirroring duplicates data between IBM DS3500/DCS3700 storage subsystems for optimal application and data availability in the event of a disaster, or for other business data migration needs.

Enhanced Remote Mirroring offers synchronous (Metro Mirror), asyn-chronous (Global Copy) replication and asynchronous with consistency (Global Mirror) to meet your application recovery needs and service level agreements. Enhanced Global Mirroring provides significant additional capabilities for global mirroring configurations including IP implementa-tion and multiple consistency groups.

Supporting mirroring of data around the corner or across the globe, IBM DS3500/DCS3700 remote mirrors provide disaster recovery protection for your most critical data in the event of an outage and replicates data efficiently to maximize storage investments.

Metro Mirror and Global Mirror deliver Replication Flexibility to Meet Your Specific Service Level AgreementsMetro Mirror—for minimal business disruption/impactMetro Mirror can be utilized for mission critical environments which have strict application consistency requirements. It is used when there is a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) that allows no data loss and a Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of seconds, as well as the highest SLAs. The primary application does not complete its write until the remote replication is also completed, therefore the network performance and bandwidth to the remote site impacts the primary application response. Metro Mirror is typically performed over a FC network within the data center.

The Metro Mirror feature has some very desirable benefits, the most important of which is the ability to recover application data content, including the most-recently updated content, from the secondary IBM DS3500/DCS3700 storage subsystem. If the primary IBM DS3500/DCS3700 storage subsystem suffers a catastrophic failure or disaster, application data on the secondary subsystem can be recovered.

Global Mirroring—a cost effective implementationThe Global Mirroring feature provides a balance of perfor-mance and implementation cost and enables remote replication over wide-area Ethernet or FC networks. Ethernet networks offer the benefit of relatively low-cost and are attractive from an administrative perspective, given their use of established, well-understood network infrastructure and readily available switch-ing equipment. Global Mirroring allows primary-side applica-tions to run without network induced performance limitations. The assumption is that such customers can relax their demand for an absolute up-to-the-instant-of-failure coherency plan as a trade-off for lower network costs and better primary application performance.

SummaryBusinesses today need to be able to implement disaster recovery solutions to ensure a high level of data protection and customer service. The IBM DS3500 and DCS3700 System Storage Disaster Recovery Option delivers a cost effective, enterprise level solution for local and remote replication and data recovery supporting FC and IP infrastructures.
