• All demonstrations are based on the standard IBM

Cognos 10.2.1 Great Outdoors Sample package

• These exercises are part of what we teach in our

classroom, specifically from our Transformer and

Dynamic Cubes OLAP Modeling classes, as well as our

Dimensional Authoring with Report Studio class

WHAT IT IS AND WHY YOU NEED IT

RELATIVE TIME

• Relative Time

– Relative time categories, or members, allow your authors to easily compare performance over time series

– Without relative time definitions authors have a difficult time creating reports that dynamically show results in “relative” time groupings, for instance: – Current period vs. Prior period

– Current period vs. Same period, last year

– Static filters or absolute member references (Jan. 2014 vs. Jan. 2013) will ALWAYS show those time periods – they will not roll forward as your Current Period changes

RELATIVE TIME DEFINITIONS

USING OLAP MODELING TECHNIQUES TO CREATE RELATIVE TIME

RELATIVE TIME

• Where can we leverage OLAP features to define relative time members inside the data source?

– IBM Cognos Transformer

– Relative Time is Automatic for most Time Dimensions

– Can be customized fairly extensively

– Done entirely within the GUI

RELATIVE TIME DEFINITIONS IN MODELING

• Where can we leverage OLAP features to define relative time members inside the data source?

– IBM Cognos Cube Designer

– As of 10.2.1 Feature Bundle, commonly used definitions can be included Automatically

– Can customize using GUI or hand-written MDX expressions

RELATIVE TIME DEFINITIONS IN MODELING

CUSTOM RELATIVE TIME DEFINITIONS IN MODELING

• There are three types of relative time categories: • Single Category

• Month, Quarter, Shift

• Period-to-Date Total or Period-to-Date Total Grouped • Week-to-Date, Year-to-Date Grouped, Quarter-to-Date

Grouped

• N-Period Running Total (and Grouped) • 6 Months running total from this year compared with

same 6 Months last year, 1 Quarter running total from 4 Quarters ago

DEFINING THE CURRENT PERIOD IN MODELS

• By default: • In both Transformer and Cube Designer, the latest date that

is encountered for the source column which is used to populate your Time Dimension will determine the Current Period for that Cube

• You can manually define Current Period, if desired Transformer: Cube Designer:

• Again, the desire is to create DYNAMIC reports that enable time-series analysis with NO MAINTENANCE required! • Current versus Prior period • Rolling n-Period Trending • Period-to-Date analysis

• Leverage pre-defined Relative Time Definitions, or • Create your own!
