The 2015 Dr. Robert Escher Close-up and Parlor Competition is quickly approaching. It is scheduled for November 17th. This year’s theme is Close-up & Parlor Magic. Anything that you can do on a table, or with coins, cards, and other small objects is allowed. Things like linking rings, rope tricks, and small format mentalism tricks are allowed. There will be prizes for first, second, and third place in the Senior category, as well as first and second place in the Junior category. We will also have a People’s Choice Winner. We are working on having a particular sponsor provide participation gifts to all participants as well as prizes for the winners. In addition, a certificate and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. If you are interested in competing, please contact Ken Abbott at [email protected]. “An amateur practices until he gets it right. A professional practices until he can’t get it wrong.”

Jay Sankey is a true magician’s magician and is widely considered to be one of the most origi-nal thinkers and finest magic teachers alive today. He is also one of the most prolific magic creators on the planet.
While many of his especially creative contemporaries have a few dozen original routines to their credit, at last count Jay has created well over 700 original magic effects. Jay’s uncanny gift as magic inventor was evident from an early age. For his 11th birthday he was given a toy magic set and by the age of 18 he was traveling the world lecturing on the subject of sleight-of-hand magic to both professional and amateur magicians.

My Monthly MusingsJim Harris, President
From the Editor:
Hey Everybody It’s Magic Time! In my act I use a song from Styx called Music Time and the lyrics start “Hey Ev-erybody It’s Music Time!” but, we are starting out to be in the busiest time of the year for us. So, it really is Magic Time! Starting on October 3rd there is the Magic Mini-Summit, in Indianapolis and all of you are invit-ed to attend. This is being put together by our S.A.M. Territorial Vice President Steven Spence. The past president and current President of the S.A.M. will be on hand and there will be lecturers and dealers, plus a chance to met other magicians in our area. Following that we have a really fun guy and a very creative magician - seems he’s always coming out with something new: Jay Sankey. His lecture promises to be a blast and one I look forward too every time he comes here. There’s also the Masters of Illusion appearing at the Louisville Palace, later in the month. Then we start November with the Unconventional Convention put on by the Lexington Magic Club, the first weekend in November and our close-up/parlor contest. We have several events where we need walk around magicians, so let Pete Miller know if you want to help out with any of that. If you can do 3-5 tricks re-ally well that fit in your pockets then you could get lots of performing experience at these events. Derby City Magic continues the last Saturday of each month at the Laughing Derby on Bardstown Road. This last month I did my 50 minute one man show and it’s always a good crowd who is there to see magic. Lets support this monthly show featuring our local talent. See you at the events!

Fall has finally arrived and it’s time to put away the lawn mowers. It’s also time to brush up on your magic, because the last three months of the year are always good for our art. Halloween’s a big-gie, with ghosts, goblins, and magic in the air. If you don’t have a Halloween gig, make a few calls and I’ll bet you can get one. If you’re going to a Halloween party, stick a few tricks in your pocket and you’ll be the life of the party.
November brings Thanksgiving, and from there we ease into December. Lots of family gath-erings, company gatherings, and holiday festivities. And don’t forget our own events: Harry Allen on De-cember 2nd and our Holiday Banquet on December 5th! This will be held at the brand new Kosair facility on Bardstown Road (a former car dealership). In ad-dition to fantastic food and drink, Michael Raymer promises a show that you don’t want to miss. Mark it on your calendar today!
We host Jay Sankey on October 5th. And start practicing now for the close-up contest on November 17th. If you would like to enter the contest, please let Ken Abbott know.
Enjoy your magic! See you at the next meeting.
