Business Manager Report

Brothers and Sisters,

Make sure that you get out to vote on November 2nd. A list of endorsements is on our

website on the Calls Page. The elections are for Municipal Government, school board

positions, a Gambling Referendum in Cedar Rapids, and an extension to the 1% Local

Option Sales Tax for Paving for Progress in the CR Metro Area. Without an extension to the

sales tax, the funding for the road repairs would have to come from somewhere else,

historically, property tax increases have been the default for such needs. If Cedar Rapids

were to pass the Gambling Referendum and the State Gaming Commission were to grant

approval for a casino, there will be a casino built in Cedar Rapids. Local Building Trades

has already secured a PLA for the project with the investors to ensure that it gets built using

Union Workers.

We would like to thank everybody that helped in making the fundraiser for Jeb Novak and

his family a huge success. At the end of the day, we were able to raise $11,107.00 for their

family and suicide awareness organizations. This could not have been accomplished if it

weren’t for the Brotherhood. Numerous members and their families stepped up to get

donations from local businesses, donated money out of their pockets, and sacrificed their

time to organize and participate in the event. Difficult times like these reinforce what it

truly means to be a Union member; we are in this together. We urge everyone to continue

to reach out a hand to help those around us that are struggling, if we can help, let us know.

Moving forward, the website and the newsletter will have a section reserved for a

“Patronize List”. There are a lot of local businesses that support us either through hiring

Union contractors or giving us donations for various causes. If you know of a business that

should be highlighted, let us know, so we can add them to the list. It is important that we

support their business and just as important that we let them know why, when we do.

In Solidarity,

Junior Luensman

Each month we choose a different contract topic to educate our members and to initiate

constructive conversations in the field about the current contract that we work under. It is

the responsibility for every member to know, understand and abide by our contract. If

there are parts of the contract that you need clarity on, give us a call and we will provide

you with the answers. If there are areas in the contract that could be improved upon, start

the conversations with us so that we can inject your ideas into our negotiations. Our

contract, benefits and working conditions will only improve if we follow the current rules.

Whenever anyone steps outside the bounds of the contract, we lose leverage at the

negotiations table. We have printed contract booklets at the Hall and there is a

downloadable PDF on the website. Take the time to familiarize yourself with your

contract.

Patronize List

The following list of businesses are those that donated items to the fundraiser that we had

for the Novak Family. We could not have had the success that we had without their

support. Remember to patronize these places and thank them for their support.

The Iowa City Unit Meeting will be on Wednesday, November 3rd at 4:30 pm. Our contract

will expire on November 30th. Once negotiations are complete we will schedule a ratification

and allocation meeting.

Boosters Are Available,

But Not Everyone Qualifies For One

Nearly 190 million Americans are fully vaccinated,

according to the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC), but not everybody can get a booster

shot at this time. Moderna and Pfizer vaccine recipients

are only eligible for a booster if they are at least six

months out from the original vaccine and are 65 and

older, or 18 and older with an underlying health

condition that puts them at high risk for severe COVID-

19. Individuals 18 and up who live or work in high-risk

settings also qualify for an mRNA booster.

Young and otherwise healthy adults whose jobs or living

situations don't put them at risk are encouraged to hold

off on a booster shot for now. Data shows the mRNA

vaccines are still highly protective against severe illness

in most people.

When it comes to J&J’s booster, eligibility requirements

are more straightforward: Anyone 18 or older who had

their vaccine at least two months ago can get a booster.
