What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme? § A comprehensive two-year curriculum which integrates
requirements for the OSSD and those unique features of the IB course of study
§ An internationally recognized, portable pre-university programme
§ An integrated subject curriculum that challenges students to develop skills that will be used throughout their adult lives
§ Criterion referenced, IB monitored, problem-solving based curriculum: critical thinking NOT memorization

Scholarship Offers § With the class of 2016, Power IB students,
over a six year span, have received scholarship offers totalling $3.34 million.

IB RESULTS In the Americas, students who earn the diploma have a 4 year university
graduation rate of 88.6% However, the four year graduation percentage for all students who start
university is 51.3% Power’s 2016 average diploma score: 33 pts = 91.7% Students may earn up to four university first year equivalency credits Classes of 2011- 2016 earned 724 potential first-year equivalency credits

IB Courses of Study at MPSJ All students will attempt: 3 Higher Level (HL) courses: English and two of Biology/Chemistry/
History. Taught over three semesters in grades 11 (year 1) and 12 (year 2)
3 Standard Level (SL) courses: French, Math or Math Studies, and one of
Art/Economics/Geography/History/Music/Visual Arts/Physics. Taught over two semesters
Please note that these courses are pre-grouped into 4 streams: Group 1- Arts/Business Group 2 - Phys.Science/Business/Architecture Group 3 - Health Science/Biology/Business Group 4- Arts
The Core of the IB Circle Theory of Knowledge: Grade 11 Semester 2 Epistemology Course Exploring “How we know what
we know” through: perception/reason/emotion/language
Connecting applications made between the
disciplines and supported by a TOK lecture series starting in Semester One of Grade 11 year
Prescribed IB Essay topics + Presentation
The Extended Essay Personally chosen, formal academic essay of
approximately 4000 words in one of the subject areas
Process mentored by an MPSJ teacher Externally Evaluated Effective preparation for research expected at
university
CAS: Creativity, Activity, and Service
In IB, we teach the whole student and recognize that academics are only one part of a whole.
CAS: 18 months completed in grades 11 and 12 of balanced,
experiential learning at its best: imaginative/service oriented/involved in the school’s many active communities
Students log and reflect upon their efforts Excellent foundation for scholarship and personal statements
that are central to many university programme entrances

Congregated classes in English, French, Science, Math, History and Geography
Building a supportive atmosphere that allows students to take pride in
academic excellence Dedicated MPSJ Pre-IB Co-ordination For all MPSJ students, after school support labs are present in all subject
disciplines Math SL Candidates will complete grade 11 math in Grade 10 Semester 2
IB Evaluation Each subject is graded from 1-7 marks based on
pre-defined expectations (6 x 7 = 42 pts) TOK, EE, CAS = 3 potential ‘bonus’ points:
evaluation externally moderated and criterion referenced
Total Points = 45 32 points + = Serious consideration for scholarship

The IB Application Process § Grade 7/8 Reports § CAT3/4 and or EQAO Standardized Tests § Confidential Teacher Recommendation § Awards/Hobbies/Volunteerism/Community
Involvement/School Activity Form § Submission of ONE of the three prescribed writing
topics (ideally, supervised by elementary school teacher)
§ Due date: December 1st § Non-TCDSB students should complete Student
Registration Form
To Earn the IB Diploma
§ Complete all TOK, EE, CAS and achieve above ‘E’ = elementary performance
§ Complete all classroom work § Take all six courses and their examinations § Must score at least 24 pts (with at least 12
pts in HL courses and no more than 3 grades at level 3)
§ And, of course, no guilt of academic malpractice
