Welcome to the International Baccalaureate program at ACS Athens! As you may know, ACS was the first school to implement the IB in Greece, and one of the first world wide. We have been offering the program for more than 30 years and we continue to grow steadily. In addition, we are proud to announce that, ACS is the first authorized school in Greece to implement the Primary Years Program (PYP) and the Middle Years Program (MYP), thus preparing our students even better for the IB Diploma Program. The purpose of this booklet is to introduce the IB program to parents and students new to our school, as well as to explain the program in further detail to those who already know it. WHAT CAN THE IB DO FOR YOU?

• The IB Program can help students to become well-rounded, well-educated young adults.

• The IB Program prepares students for university level work. • The IB Program provides continuity for students who transfer among

international schools. • The IB Diploma provides entrance to the university systems of many countries

around the world. • Following a course of studies leading to the award of an IB Diploma makes

students applying to American universities more competitive in relation to their peers.

placement credit in American universities and colleges.

WHY PURSUE THE IB AT ACS ATHENS?

• As of June 2002, ACS formally became authorized by the IBO as a JK-12 IB school. The Primary Years Program (PYP) and the Middle Years Program (MYP) now better prepare all of our students, should they wish to enter the Diploma Program in Grade 11.

• Students pursuing two Language-A courses may receive a Bilingual Diploma. All

ACS students earn an American high school diploma. They may receive both the IB diploma and the ACS Athens American high school diploma.

• ACS Athens IB courses are integrated into the whole school curriculum. Students

not enrolled in the IB Diploma Program may enroll as certificate candidates in individual IB courses as part of the college preparatory program.

• The ACS Athens Writing Project philosophy goes hand in hand with the IB

philosophy, which places students’ thinking and making meaning at the center of learning

• The 180-day US school calendar allows our faculty to cover the IB syllabus in

depth and precludes the need for outside tutoring. In keeping with American education philosophy, teachers are readily available to offer extra help and provide individual attention to students, as part of their normal teaching duties.

• ACS Athens has the most experienced IB faculty in Athens

UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES ACS Athens has an excellent college admissions record for its IB graduates, with 100% acceptance rate to a university or college of their first or second choice.

THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM

The IBO Diploma Program is a comprehensive and rigorous two-year curriculum leading to examinations for students in their final two years of the Academy. The general objectives of the IBO are to provide students with a balanced education; to facilitate geographical and cultural mobility; and to promote international understanding through shared academic experiences. Diploma candidates are required to select one subject from each of six subject groups (1-Native Language/Literature, 2-Second Modern Language, 3-Individuals and Societies, 4-Experimental Sciences, 5-Mathematics, 6-Electives). At least three and not more than four are taken at higher level (HL) and the others at standard level (SL). Thus, students are able to explore some subjects in depth and some more broadly over the two-year period; this is a deliberate compromise between the early specialization preferred in some national systems and the breadth found in others. The program also offers special features in addition to the traditional strengths of a liberal arts curriculum: Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Extended Essay. Students choosing not to follow the Full Diploma Program may pursue Certificates in individual subjects at either the higher or standard level. Applications and information on the IB Full Diploma Program are available from the IB Coordinator in the IB Office

THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a required interdisciplinary course intended to stimulate critical reflection upon the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. TOK challenges students to:

• Question the bases of knowledge • Be aware of subjective and ideological biases • Develop a personal mode of thought based on analysis of evidence expressed in

a rational argument. The key element in the IBO’s educational philosophy, Theory of Knowledge seeks to

develop a coherent approach to learning which transcends and unifies the academic subjects and encourages appreciation of other cultural perspectives.

At ACS Athens, TOK is the seventh course in the IB curriculum. Beginning September 2000, TOK will be a three-semester requirement. It will be taught in the first year of the program, as well as in the first semester of the second year, in order to challenge students to reflect critically on their learning experiences throughout the rest of their Diploma program of studies.

Students are assessed on the basis of one required essay chosen from a list of prescribed titles and one oral presentation. Essays and presentations may be written/presented with reference to any of the following parts of the TOK program:

• The role of Language and Thought in Knowledge • Value Judgments and Knowledge • Knowledge and Truth • Systems of Knowledge (Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Human Sciences,

History) • The requirements of Logical Rigor for Knowledge

THE EXTENDED ESSAY

Diploma candidates are required to undertake original research and write an Extended Essay of some 4000 words. The project offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest and acquaints students with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at university. There are currently 57 subjects, including 36 in languages, in which the essay may be written. The list of Extended Essay subjects is not the same as the list of IB Diploma subjects and the Extended Essay subject chosen by the student does not have to be one of the subjects being studied for the Diploma. The Extended Essay should be focused in its approach, but apart from initial teacher guidance it should be the student’s own personal research, albeit at an introductory level. It is an opportunity for the student to engage in the process of personal research, to communicate ideas and information logically, and to develop skills of analysis, evaluation and reasoning. At ACS Athens, the Extended Essay is begun in Spring of the Junior year and is completed by November of the Senior year. Each student works one-on-one with a teacher/supervisor, and signs a contract in which (s) he/she promises to adhere to a time table which guides the steps in the research process: choosing a topic, defining a research question, researching, planing, drafting, revising, and editing. N.B. Students who fail to meet the ACS Athens internal deadlines, as set out in the Extended Essay Contract and Progress Report, will be asked to withdraw from the Diploma program.

CAS

Creativity, Action, Service is known by its acronym CAS and is a fundamental part of the diploma curriculum. The CAS requirement takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to the academic self-absorption some may feel within a demanding school program. Participation in theater productions, sports and community service activities encourages young people to share their energies and special talents while developing awareness, concern and the ability to work cooperatively with others. The goal of educating the whole person and fostering a more compassionate citizenry comes alive in an immediate way when students reach beyond themselves and their books.

The aims of a CAS program are to: • Challenge and extend the individual student by developing a spirit of discovery and self-

reliance • Provide opportunities for service, bearing in mind that for IB students service may not just

be to the local or school community, but could also be service on behalf of the environment or the international community At ACS Athens students take part in a variety of activities including:

IB CAS Retreat, food drives, Clean Up the World Day, Walk Against AIDS, Walk for Life, Reforestation, working with the Hatzipaterion children, helping the earthquake victims and refugee groups in Greece, working with the Caretta Caretta turtles, and many others.

GROUP 2 – SECOND MODERN LANGUAGE

IB Diploma candidates come to their Group 2 Language choice with a range of competencies from the very competent bi-lingual candidate to the total beginner. • The near native speaker would choose the Language A2 program. • The student with previous experience of learning the language would choose

Language B which is a communicative program. • The student with no previous experience of learning the target language would

choose ab initio. Second Modern Languages Offered at ACS Athens

GROUP 3 – INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETIES An essential characteristic of the disciplines in this group is that their subject matter is contestable and that their study requires learning to tolerate some uncertainty. The Individuals and Societies Group includes many different aspects of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

GROUP 4 – EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCES Subjects within this group aim to help students develop an understanding of the knowledge of science, acquire conceptual and practical skills related to a scientific activity, develop the ability to analyze scientific information critically, encourage an awareness of the impact of science on society, and develop an appreciation of the responsibilities facing the scientist. Group 4 Subjects Offered at ACS Athens: • IB Biology HL/SL

• IB Chemistry HL/SL • IB Physics HL/SL

GROUP 5 - MATHEMATICS

The aims of the Group 5 programs are to develop students’ understanding of mathematics as a discipline, develop an attitude to mathematics in students favorable to subsequent learning and use of the subject, develop students’ ability to learn mathematics on their own. All math syllabuses attempt to recognize the dual nature of the subject by including items which are intrinsically interesting and worthy of study, and also items which may be required when students embark upon more advanced studies in mathematics and other subjects using mathematical techniques.

GROUP 6

Group 6 is essentially an Arts Group. However, subjects other than the Arts appear in Group 6 for reasons of Diploma structuring and the choices involved in making up a Diploma package.

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES

Entrance into the Full Diploma Program at ACS Athens is competitive, and students apply in the spring of their sophomore year. The application process includes:

• Submission of a Portfolio: four pieces of work from different subject areas • Submission of an Essay: a reflection of what the works chosen for the Portfolio

show about you, as a learner and as a student • Student Self-Evaluation • Teacher recommendations: importance is placed on study habits, motivation,

maturity, and critical thinking skills, as well as on class performance • Review of Transcripts • Non-ACS students will also be asked to sit an IB entrance exam

An Admissions Committee meets to review each candidate’s application, and recommends entrance into the IB program as either a Full Diploma Candidate, a Certificate Candidate, or a 13th year student. A Personal Interview with the student and his/her parent(s) is required upon acceptance into the Full Diploma Program.

THE IB DIPLOMA HOW POINTS ARE AWARDED

Students take exams in 6 subjects. Each subject is graded on a scale of 1-7

Passing grades = 4 - 7

For Example: A student can receive his/her diploma with 24 points (6 x 4 = 24) providing he has fulfilled all other diploma requirements of TOK, Extended Essay, CAS

or: A student can receive his/her diploma with 45 points (6x7=42+3=45) up to 3 Bonus Points are awarded for the student’s TOK and Extended Essay work

Failing grades = 1 – 3

A student is allowed to fail a subject (or subjects) but must compensate for this. For example:

A student getting a 3 in a Higher Level subject must also have a HL 5,6, or 7 and the total score must be 28 points. The diploma will be awarded.

or: A student getting a 2 in two SL subjects must have a total score of 28. The diploma will be awarded.

The Diploma cannot be awarded, whatever the total score, to candidates who have not submitted an Extended Essay, not completed TOK requirements, not engaged in and documented CAS activities. Students who fail to receive the diploma or pass a subject exam have the right to re-sit any subject in either November or May. The higher score will count and the diploma may then be awarded.

AMERICAN COMMUNITY SCHOOLS OF ATHENS INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

FULL DIPLOMA STUDENT CONTRACT SAMPLE has been accepted into the IB Program at ACS Athens as a Full Diploma Student beginning September 200___. Being a Full Diploma student carries certain obligations and responsibilities, and by signing this contract the student and parent(s) indicate that they understand and will abide by all IB regulations, both external (IBO) and internal (ACS Athens). • It is understood that all ACS Athens Graduation Requirements must be met in

order for the student to graduate and receive the ACS Athens High School Diploma. If students have not completed graduation requirements, they will be withdrawn as Full Diploma Candidates.

• It is understood that students must maintain good academic standing during both

years of the IB Diploma Program. Students earning more than one D in a diploma subject at the end of the Junior year, will not be allowed to enroll as IB diploma candidates during the Senior year. They will enroll as Certificate candidates in the courses in which they have been successful.

• It is understood that students must abide by the ACS Athens attendance policy.

Students must understand the importance of attending all classes. Absenteeism and/ or tardiness is strongly discouraged and may adversely affect the student’s grade.

• It is understood that the IB Diploma will not be awarded to students who have not

completed the requirements for CAS, TOK, and Extended Essay. The requirements are as follows:

• CAS - Students will set up a CAS Program in September of the first year

and promise to participate in the three aspects of the program (Creativity, Action, and Service) on an average of 3-4 hours each week for the duration of the program. Students will keep a CAS Logbook, and complete the CAS Supervisor forms for each activity. CAS logbooks/forms are checked periodically, and students must turn them in by the specific deadlines (to be decided on by the CAS and IB Coordinators). Any student who fails to complete the CAS program satisfactorily, or fails to meet the final CAS deadline will be reported to IBO and will not receive the IB Diploma but may receive IB Certificates in individual subjects.

• TOK - Students will enroll in the Theory of Knowledge course in the first

year of the program, as well as in the first semester of their second year, as part of their regular school schedule. They receive an ACS Athens grade for TOK which goes on their high school transcript, and must also submit a required essay evaluated by IB. All course requirements (including a required oral presentation) as set out by the instructor and IB must be met.

• Extended Essay - Each student must undertake original research and write an Extended Essay. Essays are begun in Spring of the junior year and finished by November of the senior year with the bulk of the research and writing done throughout the spring and summer. There are several deadlines associated with the Extended Essay, and students must adhere to these. Students who fail to meet the ACS Athens internal deadlines, as set out in the Extended Essay Contract and Progress Report will be asked to withdraw from the Diploma Program.

• Students who fail to complete or document their CAS work, fail to complete the

TOK coursework by mid January of the senior year, or fail to complete the Extended Essay by November of the second year will not be registered as Full Diploma Candidates in October of their senior year. They may register as Certificate Candidates in specific subject areas.

• All work done by a student must be the student’s own work. If malpractice is

suspected, IBO will be notified. Examples of malpractice are: • submission of assessment which is not the candidate’s own unaided work • lack of proper supervision for an Extended Essay • malpractice during a written examination (IB or ACS) • plagiarism • computer misuse/abuse

If malpractice is substantiated, the student will be withdrawn from the Full Diploma Program and may not be allowed to sit for that particular IB subject exam.

• An IB Administrative Fee is charged at the beginning of the program (August of the first year) and is payable to ACS Athens. Additionally, in October of the second year, Diploma Candidates must pay the exam registration fees, which are determined by IBO each year.

• Students are required to attend mandatory IB meetings when called by the IB

Coordinator, and parents must attend the IB orientation meeting held in October each year. At this time, a schedule of events / exams / deadlines for the school year is given.

• IB Diploma candidates normally enroll in the IB Seminar as the 8th Block in their

schedule. During this time they are encouraged to work productively to meet course, Extended Essay and CAS requirements. Students, who do not make productive use of this time, will lose IB Seminar privileges and will be enrolled in an eighth course instead.

μαθητές που επιθυμούν να ακολουθήσουν το τελικό στάδιο του Διπλώματος ΙΒ στις 2 τελευταίες τάξεις του λυκείου.

• Οι μαθητές που επιλέγουν δύο γλώσσες σε επίπεδο Γλώσσας Α (μητρικής)

αποκτούν το λεγόμενο Δίγλωσσο Δίπλωμα - Bilingual Diploma • Οι μαθητές που επιλέγουν να ακολουθήσουν το Πρόγραμμα ΙΒ αποφοιτούν με

δ΄θο διπλώματα: 1. Το Αμερικανικό Απολυτήριο Λυκείου - American High School Diploma 2. Το Δίπλωμα ΙΒ - IB diploma 3. Επίσημο Πιστοποιητικό για κάθε μεμονωμένο μάθημα ΙΒ - IB Certificate,

σε περίπτωση που δεν έχουν επιλέξει ολόκληρο το πρόγραμμα, αλλά συνδυασμό μαθημάτων.

• Το ΑCS διαθέτει την πλέον έμπειρη ομάδα καθηγητών, που γνωρίζουν εισ βάθος το Πρόγραμμα ΙΒ και που με την πολυετή τους πείρα, παρέχουν διδασκαλία υψηλού επιπέδου.

• Επί σειρά ετών, είχαμε άριστα αποτελέσματα εισαγωγών στα πανεπιστήμια Αγγλίας, ΗΠΑ και πολλών άλλων χωρών (200, 2001, 2002 - 100% επιτυχία αποφοίτων σε πανεπιστήμια 1ης ή 2ας επιλογής τους)

ΓΕΝΙΚΑ ΧΑΡΑΚΤΗΡΙΣΤΙΚΑ ΤΟΥ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ ΙΒ Το Διεθνές Απολυτήριο είναι ένα ολοκληρωμένο, εντατικό διετές πρόγραμμα σπουδών, που απευθύνεται σε μαθητές Β’ και Γ’ λυκείου, και που έχει σαν κύριους στόχους:

• Μία ισορροπημένη, σφαιρική και συγχρόνως εξειδικευμένη μόρφωση • Την εισαγωγή σε όλα τα πανεπιστήμια του κόσμου • Την διευκόλυνση γεωγραφικής και πολιτισμικής κινητικότητας • Την προώθηση της κατανόησης μεταξύ των εθνών και των πολιτισμών,

μέσω μιας κοινής ακαδημαϊκής εμπειρίας Το Διεθνές Απολυτήριο προσφέρεται μόνο σε επιλεγμένα σχολεία, τα οποία πληρούν αυστηρότατες ακαδημαϊκές προδιαγραφές, που υπαγορεύει ο Οργανισμός Διεθνούς Απολυτηρίου (ΙΒΟ), που εδρεύει στην Γενεύη. Αξιοσημείωτο είναι, το ότι το Υπουργείο Παιδείας της Ελλάδας, αναγνωρίζει επισήμως το Διεθνές Απολυτήριο, κατοχυρώνοντάς το δια νόμου (ν. 2327/95) με την ισοτιμία του με το Απολυτήριο Ενιαίου Λυκείου, εφόσον το σχολείο όπου προσφέρεται πληρεί τους όρους, που θέτει το ελληνικό κράτος, συγκεκριμένα, πρόσθετα μαθήματα ελληνικής ιστορίας και νεοελληνικών, παράλληλα με τα μαθήματα του ΙΒ. Τα μαθήματα του Διεθνούς Απολυτηρίου χωρίζονται σε έξη ομάδες και προσφέρονται σε υψηλό επίπεδο ΗL, ή σε κανονικό επίπεδο SL. Οι μαθητές που ακολουθούν ολόκληρο το πρόγραμμα υποχρεούνται να διαλέξουν ένα μάθημα από κάθε ομάδα. Τουλάχιστον τρία και όχι περισσότερα από τέσσερα από τα έξη μαθήματα πρέπει να είναι σε υψηλό επίπεδο. Επιπλέον , κάθε υποψήφιος πρέπει να παρακολουθήσει το μάθημα της Θεωρίας της Γνώσης (Theory of Knowledge), να παρουσιάσει μια πρωτότυπη γραπτή εργασία 4 000 λέξεων (Extended Essay), και να λαμβάνει μέρος στις δραστηριότητες του ειδικού προγράμματος Δημιουργικότητα, Δράση, Κοινωνική Προσφορά (Creativity, Action, Service), καταγράφοντας 240 ώρες συμμετοχής του σε δύο έτη.

ΕΙΔΙΚΑ ΧΑΡΑΚΤΗΡΙΣΤΙΚΑ : Ο ΠΥΡΗΝΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ Όπως προαναφέραμε, πέραν των έξη υποχρεωτικών μαθημάτων, κάθε υποψήφιος μαθητής ΙΒ, υποχρεούται να παρακολουθήσει το μάθημα της Θεωρίας της Γνώσης (Theory of Knowledge), να παρουσιάσει μια πρωτότυπη γραπτή εργασία 4 000 λέξεων (Extended Essay), και να λαμβάνει μέρος στις δραστηριότητες του ειδικού προγράμματος Δημιουργικότητα, Δράση, Κοινωνική Προσφορά (Creativity, Action, Service). Αναλυτικότερα, τα διπλωματικά αυτά καθήκοντα περιγράφονται ως εξής: ΘΕΩΡΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΓΝΩΣΗΣ - THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE Η Θεωρία της Γνώσης είναι ένα υποχρεωτικό "πολυθεματικό" μάθημα, που έχει σαν στόχο την διδασκαλία και ενεργοποίηση της κριτικής σκέψης, μέσα από μια σφαιρική προσέγγιση της γνώσης όλων των ανθρωπίνων δραστηριοτήτων. Οι μαθητές καλούνται να ερευνήσουν και στη συνέχεια να αμφισβητήσουν τις βάσεις, πάνω στις οποίες στηρίζονται πολλές και ποικίλες θεωρίες. Μέσα απ' αυτήν την εκπαιδευτική εμπειρία, μαθαίνουν να ασκούν την κριτική τους σκέψη, καθώς και να παρουσιάζουν τις απόψεις τους με επιχειρήματα. Επιπλέον, το μάθημα αυτό κατορθώνει να ενοποιήσει όλα τα ακαδημαϊκά μαθήματα του ΙΒ και να διδάξει την κατανόηση και την εκτίμηση διαφόρων πολιτισμών. ΓΡΑΠΤΗ ΕΡΕΥΝΗΤΙΚΗ ΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ - EXTENDED ESSAY Η Γραπτή Ερευνητική Εργασία, που υποχρεωτικά πρέπει να παρουσιάσει κάθε μαθητής, είναι βασισμένη πάνω σε ένα θέμα επιλογής του. Η εργασία αυτή πρέπει να έχει μήκος 4000 λέξεων, να είναι πρωτότυπη και να είναι το αποτέλεσμα μιας σταδιακής διαδικασίας, κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας κάθε μαθητής εργάζεται υπό την επίβλεψη ενός καθηγητού. Παραδίνεται στο πρώτο τρίμηνο του δευτέρου έτους και αποτελεί μια πρώτη προσέγγιση των εργασιών που θα αναγκασθούν οι μαθητές να ολοκληρώσουν στο πανεπιστήμιο. ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΙΚΌΤΗΤΑ, ΔΡΑΣΗ, ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΚΉ ΠΡΟΣΦΟΡΑ - CREATIVITY, ACTION, SERVICE Δημιουργικότητα, Δράση, Κοινωνική Προσφορά (CAS), είναι οι τρεις τομείς που αποτελούν τη βάση του ειδικού προγράμματος CAS. Το πρόγραμμα αυτό δίνει μεγάλη σημασία στις εξωσχολικές ενασχολήσεις των μαθητών, καθώς και στην κοινωνική τους προσφορά. Μαθαίνει δηλαδή στο κάθε νέο την σημασία του κοινωνικού συνόλου και το πόσο σημαντικό είναι να προσφέρει ο καθένας αφιλοκερδώς και εθελοντικά τις γνώσεις, τις ικανότητες, το χρόνο και τη φροντίδα του. Ο κάθε μαθητής είναι υποχρεωμένος να καταγράψει 240 ώρες (120 ώρες για το κάθε έτος συμμετοχής του σε διάφορες δραστηριότητες της επιλογής του.

AΠΟΝΟΜΗ ΤΟΥ ΔΙΠΛΩΜΑΤΟΣ ΙΒ Οι τελικές επίσημες εξετάσεις του Διεθνούς Απολυτηρίου διεξάγονται κάθε χρόνο τον Μάϊο. Κάθε δευτεροετής μαθητής είναι υποχρεωμένος να περάσει στις γραπτές εξετάσεις κάθε μαθήματος. Η βαθμολογία γίνεται με βάση το 7-1. με ανώτερο βαθμό το 7 και ελάχιστο επιτρεπτό το 4. Οι συνολικοί βαθμοί για την απονομή του διπλώματος είναι 24. Σε περιπτώσεις όπου υπάρχει βαθμολογία χαμηλότερη του 4 σε ένα ή δύο μαθήματα, και πάλι απονέμεται το δίπλωμα, αλλά μόνο εφ' όσον η συνολική βαθμολογία είναι τουλάχιστον 28 βαθμοί, και εφ' όσον ο βαθμός στα μαθήματα ανωτέρου επιπέδου είναι 5, 6 ή 7. ΔΙΑΔΙΚΑΣΙΑ ΑΙΤΗΣΕΩΝ Όλοι οι ενδιαφερόμενοι μαθητές μπορούν να κάνουν αίτηση στα μέσα της σχολικής χρονιάς της δεκάτης τάξης (Α λυκείου) για να γίνουν δεκτοί στο πρόγραμμα Διεθνούς Απολυτηρίου.. Η διαδικασία αίτησης συμπεριλαμβάνει: • Την παρουσίαση ντοσιέ ,(portfolio), με δείγματα εργασιών του μαθητή. • Την παρουσίαση έκθεσης με θέμα το περιεχόμενο του ντοσιέ, καθώς και τους

λόγους που τον οδήγησαν να επιλέξει αυτό το πρόγραμμα. • Την αυτοαξιολόγηση του μαθητη σε ειδικό 'έντυπο • Συστατικές επιστολές και υπογραφές των καθηγητών • Για μαθητές άλλων σχολών, ειδικές εισαγωγικές εξετάσεις, που

συμπεριλαμβάνουν τα παραπάνω, συν κάποιες επιπλέον γραπτές εκθέσεις που γίνονται επιτόπου.
