Objectives

Understand the requirements of earning an IB diploma.

Understand the fees related to IB courses and the diploma program.

Understand the two year progression of courses in order to prevent

students from inadvertently dropping a course necessary for the

diploma.

Six IB Subjects + DP core

Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature (Language A)

Group 2: Language Acquisition (World Languages/Language B)

Group 3: Individuals and Societies

Group 4: Sciences

Group 5: Mathematics

Group 6: The Arts (or an additional course from groups 2-4)

Core: CAS, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge

Group 1: Studies in Language and

Literature

English A: Literature (1 option only)

2 year course

Higher Level (HL) only

Exam is at the end of year 2

5 assessments:

Individual Oral Presentation

Oral Exam

Comparative Essay (Works in Translation Paper)

Paper 1 (Exam)

Paper 2 (Exam)

Group 2: Language Acquisition

(World Languages/Language B)

Spanish

French

Chinese

Arabic (ab initio exam only, must be at least year 4)

Italian (only for students with a private tutor)

German (only for students with a private tutor)

Ab initio exam after year 3 or 4 (11th or 12th grade)

Standard Level exam after year 5 or 6 (11th or 12th grade)

Higher Level exam after year 6 or 7 (12th grade only)

All have multiple IB assessments in addition to the exam

Group 3: Individuals and Societies

History: Middle East and Peacemaking

HL after year 2

Multiple assessments including exam

SL options (extenuating circumstances*)

Psychology (Group 3* or 6)

Social Anthropology (Group 3* or 6)

Environmental Systems and Societies (Group 3*, 4, or 6)

Biology (SL or HL, 2 years)

Chemistry (SL, 1 year)

These are IB lab science courses. None are a “cake walk”.

Any group 4 option can fulfill group 4 OR group 6 requirement

Check with Math RT or Math Studies teacher before registering an

11th grade student for Math Studies.

What happens if this student decides to drop Art or History in 12th grade?

Earning the Diploma

Earn no score of 1 or N (an N score results if a student is found guilty

of malpractice)

Pass both extended essay and theory of knowledge

Earn at least 12 points on top 3 HL subjects (3 HL subjects are

required, but students may take 4)

Earn at least nine on 3 SL subjects, at least five on 2 SL subjects

Earn a total of 24 on all subjects combined

Complete CAS

Exams Required

Assessments taken throughout the course are part of the final score.

Students cannot opt out of course assessments, therefor the exam

registration fee and exam fee are mandatory.

Diploma (Currently $820 divided over 2 years)

Course or Certificate

$160 registration fee for each year a student finishes a course

$110 exam fee for each year a student finishes a course

Example: a student enrolled in Anthropology in junior year and

English in both years will pay the registration fee twice and two

exam fees. A student who takes the Anthro class in senior year

along with the English exam will only pay the registration fee once. A savings of $160 at the current rate.

Multiple Labs are assessed using the criteria, student work submitted to IB

External Assessments (scored entirely by IB)
