What is chain reaction: “Chain Reaction is a teen leadership institute that offers service-learning opportunities that teach you important life skills through service and service activities that your passion and talent create. Adjustment period especially with the rigor of IB
School and extra curricular activities are important but finding a balance is key!
It is common for students to have a decrease in grades initially until they develop study skills, work habits, etc.
Having a B or C does not mean this is not the program for you
There are growing pains but remember the value in this learning curve and persevere! Stay focused
Better to have this transition now than in college = IB is college prep
High School is a big transition
Semester grades are only on transcripts (Dec and May)
9 weeks grades are NOT on transcripts If students earn a C or lower this nine weeks, this will not be on the transcript
Semester grade = 1st nine weeks + 2nd nine weeks + semester exam
Semester grade = 40% + 40% + 20%
EOC classes are weighted differently and will not affect GPA at all until the EOC score is configured (summer)
EOC final grade = 1st semester + 2nd semester + EOC
EOC final grade = 35% + 35% + 30%
Transcripts/ Semester Grades
Transcripts only include semester grades
GPA = Grade Point Average: not configured until semester 1 Unweighted = average determined when
A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1
Weighted = additional .025 for every semester grade earned in honors, pre-IB, AP, and IB classes (resulting in better than 4.0)
GPA
Class rank is not accurate until Biology EOC and Geometry EOC are configured
Colleges re-figure GPA; most give extra weight for AP and IB classes (making a B = A)
GPA Continued
Take advantage of tutoring through our student National Honor Society-AM sessions are in room #17 7:45-8:15 Monday-Thursday
-Just show up with a pass
For afternoon session, sign up in Room 17 for a tutor A few day notice is needed to ensure a tutor is available
There is no shame in getting extra help! Most students need tutoring at some point in the program!
FREE TUTORING
IB is MANAGEABLE when you manage your time!
TIME MANAGEMENT
IB is not easy, but not impossible!
TIME MANAGEMENT MISTAKES
10 TIME MANAGEMENT MISTAKES
1. Failing to Keep a To-Do List
2. Lack of Prioritizing
3. Procrastination
4. Taking on too much Involved in too many extracurriculars
5. Unmanaged Distractions Cell phones, FB, friends at school
6. Not Setting Personal Goals
7. Addiction to Busyness
8. Multitasking Takes 20-40% more time to finish
9. Not Taking Breaks
10. Not recognizing peak energy time
Morning vs. Evening
Acknowledge stresses of adolescence + high school + rigorous program
Supportive but not intrusive while maintaining reasonable expectations
Tutoring-take advantage early on!
PHS IB Policies-Cheating
Academic probation if GPA below 2.75-Probation does not start until the semester-Warning is given by a letter sent home

Types of Universities
• Public universities are local and state-funded institutions and are
usually large in size.
• Private universities are supported by tuition fees and private
donations. They typically have a smaller student body, and are more expensive to attend.
• Four-year colleges offer four-year degree programs that lead to a
bachelor's degree. Included are universities and liberal arts colleges.
• Liberal arts colleges Students take a wide variety of courses in the
arts, humanities, languages and the social and physical sciences before majoring in a specific field. The faculty’s main purpose is on undergraduate teaching rather than research, and the student population is small.
