CV

Ian Miles graduated in psychology from the University of Manchester in 1969.

He spent almost twenty years as a researcher at the University of Sussex’s Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU). He worked on a range of studies, coauthoring major reports and books on world futures, the service economy, information technology innovation, and social indicators - among other topics.

At the beginning of the 1990s, he joined University of Manchester’s Programme of Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (PREST). He was a director of PREST and a founding director of CRIC, the Centre for Research on Innovation and Competition, also at the University of Manchester. Both PREST and CRIC are now assimilated into Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MioIR), at Manchester Business School (MBS). He leads studies of service innovation and of foresight at MIoIR. He has also been codirector of the Centre for Service Research at MBS, and is Acting Head of MBS’ Division of Innovation Management and Policy (within which MioIR is located)..

In 2011 he became head of the newly established Laboratory of the Economics of Innovation at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, where he spends several months each year.

He has wide-ranging research interests and uses a variety of methods. Much of his work on technological innovation has concerned new generic technologies - especially Information Technologies (IT) - and he has been particularly interested in service industries as users and sources of innovation. IT is especially important for these industries, but other technological and organisational innovations are also highly relevant. Apart from analyses of services in general, he is particularly associated with Knowledge-Intensive Business INGINEUS dimensions, and using tools such as case studies and survey analysis. He is on the editorial board of R&D Management, the International Journal of Services Technology and Management, and the Service Industries Journal.

Broader interests concern the social and employment implications of changing technology,

and the social shaping of technologies; the evaluation of social science and other research

programmes; social and other indicators; and Foresight methods and practice. (In

connection with the latter, he is on the editorial board of several leading journals such as

Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Foresight, and the International Journal of

Foresight and Innovation Policy, as well as journals focusing more on services and

innovation issues.).

His work has been carried out for many sponsors, including the Economic and Social

Research Council, UK government departments (DTI, DEFRA), foreign government

departments and agencies (for example, Brazil, Finland, Luxembourg and Switzerland),

international organisations (e.g. the EC's DG Research and DG Enterprise, World Bank,

UNCTAD, UNIDO) and private companies (e.g. BT, BNFL) and associations (e.g. the

International Natural Fibres Organisation). As well as producing numerous reports, he has

written around 1500 book chapters and 100 journal articles, authored and co-authored

twelve books and co-edited a further ten. Over 60 reports have been published, with much

more as “grey” literature. Much of this material (and more by way of presentations, etc.)

can be located online; cf. his Google Scholar Profile and scribd and slideshare sites.

He also teaches a variety of courses (mainly connected with foresight, knowledge

economy, and service innovation), and supervises MSc dissertations and DPhil theses. (A

list of successful PhD supervisions, and of role asPhD examiner, is at the end of this

document.) Most of his teaching is postgraduate or executive education. Main teaching

activities in recent years are:

At HSE, Moscow, 2011-12: courses on Business Models for Master’s students in

Department of Business Informatics

2012: one lecture to undergraduate students in Department of Business Informatics

on trends in information technologies

2012: teaching on a range of innovation-related themes in ISSEK courses.

At University of Manchester, for at least 5 years: designing and delivering a module

on Service Innovation for the MSc on Innovation Management and

Entrepreneurship

Lecturing on services and innovation in undergraduate management courses

Designing and delivering annual Executive Education course of Foresight.

He serves on a range of Advisory Boards for research institutes in the UK and more

widely.

Earlier short reviews were published in numerous journals and magazines, including New Scientist, Sociology, Current Psychology, New Technology Work & Employment, Times Higher Education Supplement, Futures, Electronics Times, Computer Weekly, Project Appraisal, and the Economic Journal. Electronic media appearances have generally taken the form of broadcast interviews: these have been featured on Open University programmes, and scientific and educational services of BBC national and local, and overseas radio stations. However, there have been some exceptions. One TV programme (1988) featured reenactments of the interview research used in the unemployment studies of the mid-1980s; and some of the written material from these studies was recorded onto optical disc as part of the Domesday Project. The ESPRIT QLIS project over 1990-92 involved among other things the preparation of text material ('dataware') for a computer decision aid, as well as work in designing this hypermedia system. In 1990 I participated in a roundtable discussion on IT in a radio 4 series "Science Friction", in 1995 I was one member of a roundtable (talking about active badges) in BBC Radio’s “The Afternoon Shift”, and was interviewed for several news programmes in 1996.
