One of the key highlights featured in this sale is a coin with an amazing prov-enance and a fascinating story to tell! Following the large discovery of gold in 1851 in Australia, W.J. Taylor set out to take advantage of this opportunity. He set up what would become the “Kangaroo Office” at Port Phillip between 1853 and 1857. As an opportunistic entrepreneur and a craftsman engraver, die-sinker and medalist, he struck and re struck a number of issues from around the world, but none more famous than the Kangaroo and Port Phillip Pattern pieces he made from 1853-1860. One of the crowning Jewells of his fantastically detailed issues and with a superb portrait of Queen Victoria is the Gold Pattern Shilling on offer in this sale. One of only two known, this coin was once owned by John G. Murdoch, a famous 19th Century Industrialist, and whose collection of English coins is considered one of the most important ever formed. This coin was originally sold by Sotheby’s UK in 1904 (lot 651), and was part of a multi auction sale that today would have been worth hundreds of millions of dollars in value. This superb Gold Shilling is estimated at $200,000, and expected to draw the attention worthy of such an important item. Two Holey Dollars present here a fantastic opportunity, and with the Bicente-nary of the Holey Dollar fast approaching in 2013, now presents a great time to secure one of these historically important coins. The first example is a 1813 Holey Dollar Counter stamped on Charles IIII Mexico Mint 8 Reales 1793 (Mira 1793/3). This coin has the superb provenance of being ex the Nobleman Sale, Sothebys March 1922, as well as ex R Jewell and P Spalding (Author of The World of the Holey Dollar) collection. The Nobleman collection was owned by Duke Philip Ferrari de La Renotière, Duke of Gallièra (1850 - 1917). A lovely original coin with beautiful clear countermarks on both sides this is an ideal coin to put away and enjoy. The second example is an attractive well priced example, which also has the interesting distinction of being counterstamped T Knight, one of only 8 such known pieces. At around $30,000, this is a coin that any serious collector couldn’t afford to pass up! A number of rare Pre Decimal Proof coins are also on offer in this sale, high-lighted by two superb Gold Proof Sovereigns, an 188M Jubilee Head and 1896M Veiled Head present as superb and flawless extremely rare examples. Also in-cluded is a full 1934 Proof Silver set, well priced at $80,000 estimate, along

with a 1951PL Penny, a 1935 Shilling, and a 1939 Roo Halfpenny. A rare Taylor Pattern Sixpence in Silver with the scarcer milled edge is another great feature, and is well priced at $50,000. A number of superb grade Pre Decimal coins complete a strong selection, and with many GEM examples, some record prices are sure to be set. Key coins include a 1913, 1914H, 1915H, 1919, 1926 and 1932 Florins all in high grade, a superb 1915H Shilling, a Gem 1918 Sixpence, 1915 and 1942 Threepences are just a start. Superb and rare gold is highlighted by a choice 1861/0 Overdate Sydney Mint sovereign and 1866 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign, and the no Buyers premium Bullion section includes a rare proof 10 Ounce gold Kangaroo in it box of issue.

Rare Banknotes on offer in this sale include an UNC 5 Pound Starnote, one of only a few known and estimated at $65,000, and a 5 Pound 1918 (R 37a) the finest known. A rare 1942 10 Shilling Starnote is another feature, along with a decent number of choice grade George V Notes in UNC from 10shillings issues to 5 pounds. Also there is a rarely seen in his grade 10 Shillings 1915 (R 2d) in gEF, along with a cheaper 10 Shillings 1913 with red serials (R 1c) that would make a great example for the centenary of Pre Decimal notes (1913-2013). Other items not to be missed include a strong selection of Pre Federation is-sues, including three Promissory notes and a well priced Superscribed Pound, Decimal Starnotes including rare issues in UNC of a $5 Phillips-Randall and $10 Coombs-Randall make up another excellent selection.

The continued sale of lots from a number of our estates round out a good se-lection of cheaper and quality Pre Decimal Coins, Banknotes as well as mint products, bulk lots, sets, albums and sheets of coins with most being offered unreserved. A selection of World and Proclamation and Australian Gold Coins including our “No Buyers Premium” bullion section, some great Misprints and Mis-Strikes and more round out an excellent selection with something for every collector and investor.

We will be doing limited viewing in Sydney at the ANDA Coin and Banknote Fair at Canterbury racecourse 18th-19th August only, and due to space, weight and security constraints will include mostly the single lots only.

Some Sale 76 Auction Highlights and more…

Welcome to our first live Auction for 2012! As you would all be aware, we have just conducted our first live Postal Bid only sale. This has proven to be a great success and we envisage it will be the first of many such exciting sales! The spin off here for our live sale is that we have been up-dating our website to become the premier numismatic auction site! There is still lots of changes going on, and time restrictions mean we weren’t able to implement everything we wanted, however we anticipate by next year it will be fully updated to include a full payment gateway and even better ways of viewing and bidding. Registered internet users can now submit postal bids even easier, and can build a “Watchlist” of lots for you to contemplate and bid on. As the first Auction House to provide online content and catalogues (it was over 10 years ago when we first went online), we are committed to bringing to you the best service we can in all aspects, including an enhanced online experience.

All postal bidders please note that bids will not be accepted after 6pm Friday 31st. This is due to the volume of bids we now receive from 250 individual postal bidders, and the amount time it takes to integrate them to allow for smooth postal bidding.

Once again in this sale we have several estates with a lot of reduced reserves on items in order to clear them, along with some few old items we have got back from a financially stressed vendor that must be sold. Many reserves are again well under the estimates, many by 25% or more, so keep this in mind when placing bids! Whilst this is so, we have a nearly all fresh offering of new stock here, with a number of superb lots from old collections that have not ever been sold or recorded publically before that include some of the finest grade Coins and Banknotes of the type known. Our next sale will be in March 2013, and e will be accepting lots for this from October 2012 until mid January. I would urge you not to wait, as there have been many unhappy people who have missed out in recent sales due to the volume of material we have been offered, and our ideology of not compromising our sales. In the meantime, please again enjoy the excellent bargain packed offerings of Sale 76.

546 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games stadium pass to All Events. Tunnel 8, Row 10, Seat 6. Old tape adhesions and some stains, top right corner missing. This was given to the vendor by Norman Banks as described here by the vendor: ‘Norman Banks MBE one of Melbourne’s great radio broadcasters who had attended the LA Games as a commentator. Norman Banks was the person who started Carols by Candlelight in Melbourne in 1938. The gift from Norman Banks to me came about as I had been selected to run in the Olympic Torch Relay in 1956 and I had some association with Radio Station 3AW and always admired this ticket which was attached to the glass wall of his studio. He asked if I would like to have it. Of course as a collector of anything I said yes. In later years I had the sticky tape expertly removed by the conservators at the Ian Potter Museum and Art Gallery attached to Melbourne University. Cost $195 but I thought worth it. The discoloration is showing but all stickiness was removed and the ticket expertly preserved’. A rare and interesting item. VF

Please read the following “Terms of Sale” carefully. These terms are applicable to all floor bidders and mail bidders in this auction. Your submission of bids in this Auction

constitutes your acceptance of these “Terms of Sale”.

1. This is a public auction sale, NOT an approval sale. At the fall of the gavel or auctioneer’s call of “Sold”, all sales are then final, and any bid acknowledged and relied on by the auctioneer shall not be withdrawn. By bidding in this auction, the bidder personally guarantees all payments, and acknowledges and ac-cepts the Terms and Conditions of sale as set out herein. The auctioneer has final discretion in all such matters. In case of a dispute, the lot(s) in question may be immediately resold. The auctioneer as represented here includes International Auction Galleries as an entity. 2. Payments must be made in full and all floor bidder purchases must be removed the day of the sale, or by 5p.m. the next day. Absolutely No lots will be released until payment in full has been made. Payment may be made in Cash, by Personal Cheques (with proper identification, at their discretion of International Auction Galleries), or by Bank Transfer or Major Credit Cards as stipulated. Successful postal bidders will be notified by mail via an auction receipt. All postal bidder accounts must be fully finalised within 14 days of the sale date.3. A 16.5% buyer’s premium will be added to the knock down price of each lot (includes GST where applicable) except on all Bullion .9999 purity lots (as noted individually in the catalogue). All Credit Card payments by American Express will incur a 3% surcharge. 4. Unless otherwise specifically stated by the auctioneer, each new bid shall be raised above the previous bid by such amount as is determined by the auctioneer during the course of the auc-tion, and no party shall be allowed to retract his or her bid after acknowledgment by the auctioneer. 5. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse any bid and to withdraw any goods from sale at any time, or to disclose any reserves or vendor information, without having to state any rea-son. 6. At the fall of the hammer, (if required by the Auctioneer), the purchaser shall give his or her full name and address, and pay 25% of the purchase price deposit. In default, the lot(s) purchased may, at the auctioneer’s discretion, immediately be reoffered and resold. All lots sold will remain the property of the owner/vendor until cleared payment is made in full. Only then will the title of ownership of the lots pass to the purchaser, ir-respective of any terms or deferment of payment. 7. Except as otherwise provided by state or federal law, no con-dition or warranty is given or implied by the auctioneer in re-spect of any lot offered for sale via action. As all lots are given for inspection prior to the commencement of the sale, it shall be presumed that the goods have been inspected and that the purchaser accepts the goods are sold with all faults. No error or mis-description of any lot shall give cause for an invalidation of sale or an abatement of price, and the auctioneer shall not be held responsible for any such error. All lots are guaranteed genuine (except where so described), however if a lot sold is found to be a fake or forgery, the purchaser may then return it, and receive, upon proven confirmation to the auctioneers satis-faction, a full refund. 8. The auctioneer shall not be liable for any description or mis-description given on any of the goods presented here for sale in any way. Any statement as to the description of goods is given

as a statement of opinion only as represented to the auctioneer, and is not to be relied on as a representation of fact. Whilst every effort is made, the auctioneer gives no warranty that the quantities or any grading given with respect to the description of any lot as stated is correct. All images used are given as a guide only, and are not guaranteed to be an accurate represen-tation. 9. No lots purchased by a bidder may be returned, including those lots where the bidder is acting as agent for another. There are no returns or refunds except for reason of lack of authentic-ity (as is stated in clause 7 and 8 above detailing laiability). It is assumed that all intending bidders (including all postal and internet bidders) have obtained their own satisfaction and/or done due diligence on all lots before submitting any bids in any way. All bids submitted are thus then subject to the full terms and conditions. The auctioneer accepts no responsibility for any mistakes in any postal or phone bidding conducted. Late re-mittance of payments constitutes just cause for revocation of all return privileges. In the event that a bidder is acting as an agent for another party, and that agency has not been disclosed to the auctioneer in writing 24 hours before the sale date, then the bidder is deemed by the auctioneer to be the final buyer in all respects, and is fully responsible for all payments, fees and charges. In no event may any lot(s) be returned after Twenty One (21) days from the date of the auction. All sales are then final.10. If any purchaser fails to comply with any of these conditions or if any cheque given on account of the purchase price of any goods is dishonoured, any monies which the purchaser has paid to the auctioneer on account of the purchase shall be forfeited absolutely to the vendor. The auctioneer acting as agent for the vendor is at liberty to re-sell the lot(s) in any manner and upon such terms and conditions as they may deem proper and/or to sue the purchaser for all damages. All losses and expenses incurred by the vendor or the auctioneer and all damages which the vendor or the auctioneer may sustain resulting from any re-sale, shall be recovered from the purchaser as liquidated dam-ages.
