An introduction to IADSThe International Association of Dental Students was founded in the year 1951 in Copenhagen (Denmark) – thus for more than 57 years it is known to dental students from all over the world, serving as a platform for exchange of knowledge and experiences about dentistry at an international level. Nowadays, the IADS family represents thousands of dental students as a country and school members around the world. National and local associations of dental students are eligible for membership. When an association joins, all its members become members of IADS. Since Mid Year Meeting in Ljubljana 2009 IADS is happy to offer also a personal membership for its members.

CooperationIADS is glad about its close contact to the FDI (World Dental Federation – the Central Offi ce

of IADS is at FDI Headquarters in Ferney-Voltaire in France), to YDW (Young Dentists Worldwide), to EDSA (European Dental Students Association), to the APDSA (Asia Pacifi c Dental Students Association) to the IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students’ Association) and more. IADS as an FDI affi liate member takes part in its annual meetings with representatives from the FDI Council, joins projects like World Oral Health Day, and promotes FDI Dental Ethics Manual and others.

A six-person Executive Committee is re-sponsible for the management of the associa-tion’s affairs. It is their job to realize the ideas and decisions which are previously made together with the national representatives of the IADS member countries during the IADS meetings. Current ActivitiesWe meet twice a year. The main meeting is our Annual World Congress of Dental Students, held each August. This meeting typically attracts around 200 participants. It focusses on a scientifi c programme of lectures and seminars considering the needs of the

dental student, but also includes workshop dis-cussions, an organised social programme and the various business meetings of the Associa-tion. A small Mid Year Meeting (MYM) whose programme is devoted to business meetings is held each February-March. English is used as the common language at all our meetings.

As well as the Annual World Congress of Dental Students, we offer many things at an international level to our members. These are accessible to each and every dental student in the member countries, and include an International Student Exchange Programme, which allows students to visit a foreign country and experience its culture and dentistry, both scientifi cally and clinically.

In collaboration with different voluntary organisations, we run Voluntary Work Project which allows students to experience and help with primary oral healthcare in developing countries.

IADS Prophylactic Project as an interna-tional program takes care of education and promotion of proper dental habits among pa-tients worldwide. Through the SCORE (Stand-ing Committee on Research and Education) dental science and education shall become more important in the future of IADS – several programs have been started.

The IADS Newsletter containing informa-tion about the news in the dental world is distributed to dental schools of every corner of the world.

We have made two issues of great Newslet-ter full of new info, pictures and interesting articles. We have started very important co-operations with companies which could offer you many new opportunities for the future.

The 4th edition of the IADS Lecture Contest which took place during the IADS Midyear Meeting Russia 2011, brought together dental students from Europe, Asia and Africa. They had the chance to share the results of the achieved work, which was appreciated both by the Jury and the attendants.

On the afternoon of the 22nd day of Febru-ary, students from more than 20 countries gathered together in the marvelous auditorium of the Moscow State Medical and Stomato-logical University. The purpose was to listen and gain knowledge from the presentations of bright students who came to share the results of the managed research work. Professors from the local University honored us with their presence within the Jury.

All the participants proved that their work is of high scientifi c value, for which they should be congratulated. After more than 2 hours of great presentations and answers to the ques-tions raised, the Jury decided upon who will be granted the winner positions.

The position of 3rd place at the IADS Lecture Contest Russia 2011 was given to Dr. Chandresh Shukla who represented the

People’s College of Dental Sciences and Research Center, India. He enlightened us with the great research work “Comparison Of Mean Shear Bond Strength Of Three Different Bonding Agents Used In Orthodontic Agents”.

The 2nd place was awarded to Ms. Tatiana Vorovchenko, a dental student at Samara State Medical University (Russian Federation) (see Figure above). She was highly appreciat-

ed for “The Experimental Creation of Bioengi-neering Constructions and Combined Implants in Maxillo-Facial Surgery”.

1st place was won by Mr. Cristofor Casavela, a dental student at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Victor Babes”, Timisoara (Romania). The research work “An ‘in vitro’ comparative study regarding the effect of ultrasound on root canal preparation and apical sealing” was highly appreciated by the Jury and attendants alike.

The IADS Lecture Contest Moscow 2011 was a successful example of research knowl-edge transfer and appreciation.

The International Dental Show in Cologne is the world’s leading trade fair for dental medicine and dental technology with 115,000 visitors from 148 countries and 1,956 exhibi-tors from 58 countries. It takes place every two years in the historic and vivid city of Cologne in Germany, which is also famous for one of the biggest street festivals in Europe, the Cologne Carnival.

This year the IDS opened its doors for visi-tors from all around the globe from the 22nd to 26th of March and representatives from IADS were present at this event which is “obligatory“ for all people working in dental fi elds.

Dr. Ionut Luchian, Mr Artjom Meier and I had the honour to represent IADS and fi nd potential sponsors for our association. During these few days we had several meetings with different companies for whom we had prepared promotional personalized objects and the IADS booklet as presents.

We also had a productive meeting with Dr. Julian Fisher, executive director of the World Dental Federation (FDI), regarding the coop-eration of IADS and FDI as well as a discus-sion about future projects.

We had also the opportunity to meet Dr. Monteiro da Silva, the President-Elect of the World Dental Federation, with whom we dis-cussed the current situation of dental students around the world. He assured us of his support

to spread out the IADS spirit throughout the world and we can benefi t from his professional experience and advice.

On Friday 25th I attended the Coordina-tion Conference of Dental volunteer projects organized by the German Dental Association (BZÄK). Dr. Juliane Gnoth also attended the

meeting as a representative of Young Dentists Worldwide (YDW).

Each project and organization had a special time to present their projects and discuss cur-rent and past problems with their colleagues.

Many of them presented their projects en-thusiastically and I had the opportunity to give

a multimedia presentation about IADS and the volunteer projects in our member countries like India and Sudan. The participants showed their interest in the volunteer activities of the young and future dentists and also Dr. Dietmar Österreich, the vice-president of the Ger-man Dental Chamber, and Thomas Walber, manager of the German Dental Exchange Service (ZAD), assured me of their support for the national association (ZAD), which is a full member of IADS.

IDS is not only about work, it is also an opportunity to meet old friends or to meet new

people. For example BDZA and YDW orga-nized events, where young dental profession-als could meet and have fun together.

It was a pleasure to be there and meet so many interesting personalities, to see all the new products and take part in all these events.

I’m sure that in 2013 I will be there again. What about you?

The International Association of Dental Students (ADSA), the most representative as-sociation worldwide, has reached an incredible development having the great but very diffi cult mission to unite dental students from all over the world and support the exchange of knowl-edge and experience at a global level.

As M. Ghandi said, our evolution proved that we can be the change. Students want to explore the dental world and we are working hard to harmonize the educational systems and student research programmes from differ-ent international universities.

IADS was invitated by the Executive Com-mitte of American Student Dental Associa-tion to send a representative to their Annual Meeting which took place in March 2011 in Anaheim, California, USA. As president I got the privilege to represent IADS at this great event and to send the delegates our message.

ASDA is a very professional association which represents 17000 american dental

students from 59 american universities. Their Executive Committee is composed by presi-dent, two vice-presidents and the Executive Director. The very interesting thing in their structure is that although the president and the two vice-presidents change every year they have a stable staff. The leader of the staff is the Executive Director, Nancy Honeycutt. The members of the ASDA staff work full time for the association and they have their own offi ce in the American Dental Association’s (ADA) central offi ce in Chicago.

The association is organized in 11 districts which gathers a different number of universi-ties. Each district has a trustee, an elected representative. The board of trustees works very close with the Executive Committee. The immediate Past President is counciling the Board of Trustees.

Their General Assembly is called House of Delegates and the Chairman is called Speaker of the House. The speaker of the house is elected every year as the ExCo. Each university sends two delegates in the House of Delegates and their asselmbly is impressive. They use voting cards for expressing their

the beginning of a fruitful longterm partnersihp between IADS and ASDA.

During my stay in the USA I also had a meeting with Mr. Michael Birnbaum, President and founder of International Service Learning a company which encourages and faciliates the student’s access to voluntary work. They have cooperations with a lot of dentists world-wide and would like to support IADS involving more in this network. He invited us to visit some of their dental offi ces in Costa Rica and we are already working hard in including them in our Voluntary Work Program.

I also had the chance to have a joint meeting with the representatives of AADR National Student Research Group- Kaitrin Baloue, President elect, Hispanic Dental As-sociation –Ricardo Lugo, Trustee, American Dental Education Association – Diana Lyu, Group Leader for Public Policy and Advocacy, Student National Dental Association – Ngozi Okoh, President elect, EDSA – Matthieu Wipf, vice-president, ASDA – Nancy Honeycutt, Executive Director.

Last but not least, I had the great honor to give a speech in front of the House of Delegates in which I tried to promote IADS as hard as I could and tried to convince as many american students that being together with IADS is better!

I would like to thank ASDA’s Executive Committee on behalf of IADS for their warm invitation and the fruitful meeting. We are sure that this was just the beginning of a great long-term partnership!

opinion on different matters. In the opening of the session each delegate has to register in order to establish the quorum. They showed deep consideration for the printed programme and under no circumstances were there any modifi cations. The House of Delegates ses-sions lasted as long as they were listed in the programme and not more.

For instance some ammendments were dis-cussed in working groups and a representative of the working group presented to the House of Delegates a common point of view about their discussions on the ammendments. The House of Delegates gave only the fi nal vote on the ammendments. Everybody had limited time for talking to the House of Delegates in order to stick to the schedule and be produc-tive.

In ASDA there are several Councils like Council on Education, Council of licensure, Council on Membership, Council on Profes-sional Issues.

I found it very interesting that they motivate the delegates through awards given for the most active representatives of the universities.

They also have a special award called Para-gon Award for great personalities of dental medicine. This year the Paragon Award was received by Prof. Dr. Arthur Dugoni, a legend of Californian dental education. Prof. Dugoni was for 28 years Dean of the School of Den-tistry from the Univeristy of the Pacifi c, San Diego. Today the Pacifi c School of Dentistry was proudly named after Arthur Dugoni.

The schedule is quite intense and I didn’t get any free time. They use every moment in a constructive way. For instance, during lunchtime, sponsors gave presentations. So while having lunch you could also hear a presentation.

The last evening was dedicated to the retir-ing president and it’s called President’s dinner dance. This is the evening when people party the most. This year their theme was „the 80’s”.

A new ExCo of ASDA has been elected and their new president is Adam Shisler and the two vice presidents are Ken Randall and Brit-tany Bensch. I like to believe that I established a very good connection with the new members of the new ASDA ExCo which will represent

IADS meetings are always a great opportunity of meeting old friends and making new ones but in the same time they are highly profes-sional and extremely fruitful for the activity of our association.

In 2010 our Mid Year Meeting was hosted by our friends from the Republic of Macedonia in Lake Ohrid, the 2011 one took place in Mos-cow, Russian Federation. This time our hosts were the National Medical Students’ State from Russian Federation and the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry.

The cold winter didn’t stop IADS family to bring, once again, their outstanding contribu-tion to the continuous development of our organization. People seemed more interested than ever in improving and consolidating what our predecessors built since 1951.

As always the meeting was structured com-bining both a working programme with a social programme. The working programme was

mainly represented by our General Assemblies and offi cial ceremonies. The social programme was the choice of our hosts who introduced us to the typical Russian way of entertainment.

The Executive Committee encouraged delegates to freely express their points of view regarding matters arised by the meeting agenda during General Assemblies. We really think that we had a great work together during this Mid Year Meeting, and a lot of new ideas and proposals can be put into practice in the near future. In our approach IADS should be an environment where people can feel free to express their thoughts, and debate

different aspects. The main conclusion after the General Assemblies was that although sometimes we might have different points

of view, we should keep in mind that we are united by a common goal of improving dental education and exchange of knowledge at a global level. Another special moment was the offi cial ceremony where we got the chance to meet so many Russian well known dental professors which showed themselves very supportive about our cause and in the same time they were extremely proud to have IADS family gathered in their university.

The social programme was also challeng-ing. We got the unique chance to visit Moscow sights such as Red Square, Kremlin Palace, art museums and many other that you might

see once in a lifetime. The organizers provided us the chance to try traditional Russian cuisine as well.

Another special social event was the Inter-national Exchange Fair. Although this event is usually specifi c for the Annual Congresses this year we had it also in the Mid Year Meeting. During the International Exchange Fair people got the occasion to bond their connections and exchange ideas about their cultures. Our general opinion was that although the rough Russian winter is a fearless enemy, this time IADS friendship won the battle and we proved everybody once again that together is better!

Wrigley Oral Healthcare Programs (WOHP) is partnering with the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Salivary Research Group (SRG) for the third year to co-sponsor the 2012 Wrigley Salivary Research Award. The award provides young researchers and dental professionals the opportunity to attend and participate in the IADR 90th General Session & Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 20–23, 2012.

These awards intend to recognize excellent research and assist with travel costs to attend the IADR General Session & Exhibition where each winner will be asked to present their scientifi c poster or give an oral presentation in a scheduled session.

One of the main scientifi c groups with the IADR is SRG which is a leading forum for dental researchers to exchange scientifi c information related to saliva and salivary glands. The SRG has a large student membership and encourag-es scientists, young investigators and students to become involved in salivary research.

WOHP operates in 47 countries worldwide and shares a dedication to supporting dental students and professionals across the globe. WOHP is committed to clinical research into

the benefi ts of chewing gum including saliva stimulation, plaque acids neutralization and tooth strength to help oral care professionals and their patients understand the role of sug-arfee gum as a convenient tool for everyday oral healthcare.

The 2012 Wrigley Salivary Research Award is a great opportunity to have your work validated through the peer-reviewed judging process and explore the city of Rio de Janeiro. Good luck to all applicants!

The AwardsUp to three awards will be given: one Clinical Salivary Research Award for dental scientists ($1,500 USD), one Clinical Salivary Research

Award for dental students ($1,500 USD) and one Basic Salivary Research Award ($2,000 USD) for a dental or non-dental student.

Who Can ApplyAll applicants must be over 18 years of age and a member of the IADR. You do not have to be a member of the IADR SRG. Dental and non-dental students (undergraduate and graduate), dentists involved in research and other dental scientists are eligible.

Abstract RequirementsThe abstract must be within the Salivary Re-search area of study. All entries must be 300 words or less and contain content under the following headings: introduction, method, re-sults and conclusion. The SRG program chair will confi rm that the elements noted above are included, and if any pieces are missing, the entry will be disqualifi ed.

How to Enter Abstract submissions open on September 9, 2011. To apply, you must fi rst submit an ab-stract to the IADR 90th General Session and Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro through the IADR

website at www.iadr.org. Simultaneously select the Wrigley Salivary Research Award button. The IADR deadline for all abstract submis-sions is January 13, 2012. For additional de-tails, visit www.iadr.org/SRGResearchAward.

Review ProcessAn awards committee consisting of the SRG leadership will determine the awardees. The IADR/SRG will distribute award letters ap-proximately two months after the deadline for abstract submission.

IntroductionThe Epulis fi ssuratum is caused by chronic irritation from badly adapted prostheses and presents itself as a connective tissue tumor. Trauma and irritation are important etiological factors for Epulis fi ssuratum. Elimination of trauma/irritation and infl ammation can lead to modest decreases in lesion’s size and con-servative excisional surgery is the defi nitive treatment.There have been numerous surgical tech-niques developed for removing the Epulis fi s-suratum lesions. Most of these techniques can cause postoperative complications such as edema, pain, diffi culty in swallowing and jaw movements, hemorrhage, infections and slow placement of fi nal prostheses. More recently laser irritation has been used for removing hyper plastic mucosal lesions.

Materials and MethodsAn edentulous 55-year-old female patient who was referred to the Oral Medicine department in the dentistry school of Tehran University of Medical Sciences,with exophitic mass on anterior segment of alveolar ridge and labial vestibule. The size of mass was 4 * 1.5 cm

and color of mass was same as normal tissue. There was not seen any wound or erosion on the lesion (Fig 1). Moreover, there was no history of systemic diseases. After clinical ex-amination and due to her very badly adapted denture, this lesion was diagnosed as Epulis Fissuratum. Then, patient was referred to laser department and the lesion was removed by applying the Carbon Dioxide Laser (10600 nm, 20 Hz, 6.4 W) under local anesthesia (Fig 2 to 4). The patients, as well as the surgeon and the team, were protected with laser safety glasses and masks. The Patient was followed up after a month (Fig 5).

Results and DiscussionIn this patient, the use of CO2 laser for the surgical removal of Epulis lesions has resulted in several improvements including convenient mucosa removal, no bleeding or need for sutures, and minimal postoperative pain and edema and ideal healing after a month.Several researchers have reported on the use of CO2 laser for removing hyperplastic muco-sal lesions. It was noted that with this type of surgery the main advantages over conven-tional surgeries are: excellent homeostasis,

minimal trauma and edema, sterilization of the surgical wound, minimal postoperative pain and, in most cases, no need of suture. These advantages were fully observed by us when comparing our patients to those treated conventionally.

ConclusionCO2 Laser has less post-operative complica-tion compared to other methods and could be treatment of choice at Epulis fi ssuratum
