With the support of IADC and industry professional, we plan to take our
students to a one-day visit to various oil and gas companies and if possible,
on a working or maintenance Rig.
Guest Lectures
Industry professionals from companies such as ONGC and other drilling
contractors will be invited to share their experience and motivate our
students and help them understand the current needs of the industry and
possibly improve the contacts with the industry professionals.
Certified
Training
courses
Our students need to stand out in the competition with the other college and

The students were given an HSE induction by the crew to help understand the importance of HSE
on drilling facilities and also in the Oil and Gas industry. The safety protocol, colour-coding
system, alarm systems and other company safety rules were explained. The students were also
provided with PPE (personnel protection equipment) to prevent any unwanted mishaps as
maintenance work was ongoing on the facility.
The students were also provided with lunch in the Rig cafeteria and the hospitality was impeccable
and all students were satisfied.

The crew first took students to see the rig floor; here the crew explained all the equipment present
such as the TDS (Top Drive System), crown block, travelling block, draw-works, driller’s cabin etc. The
draw-works was an E-2100 Ideco model with a rating of 2100 H.P. The students were then led to
see where the MWD team and Logging team set up their workstations during the time of drilling.
Also, the students were taken to the mud lab. Following this, the BOP system and circulation
systems were shown. The rig allows storage for two BOP stacks simultaneously. Also, while
drilling a comprehensive project the rig is jacked-up in one location and the cantilever and rig
floor move aft, starboard, port and bow sides with the help of pneumatic systems in place and by
the use of skids.

The Well Control System was the next stop. Here the students learned about why nitrogen
canisters are necessary and how they are used for Well-Control. Also, various mechanisms of the
Rotary Table and Hoisting System was explained by Aban crew
BOP system was explained. After this, the mud circulation system was introduced. Here
equipment’s such as the Shale Shaker, Degasser, Desander, Desilter, Poor Boy Gas Separator and
all the complex flow lines were explained. As the rig is designed for handling H2S all the tanks
are enclosed ones.
Following this, the Mud Pumps were shown to the students and how they operate was explained.
There were two single-action triplex mud pumps. These were supported by two individual
superchargers. The purpose and the importance of every aspect of equipment present on board
were explained and how each system is necessary for smooth operations. Students were then taken
to the engine room and the electric control room.

The entire visit was a huge success and the students had a great experience both learning wise as
well as practically. The knowledge gained in books is only supplemented by practical knowledge
gained in this fashion and the importance of such visits cannot be discounted.
The visit would not have been possible without the support of IADC and Shri. Arun Karle.
We would also like to thank Shaleen Sharma Kumar, Shreya Singh, Arun Kumar Kailasan,
Srinivasalu P, Yogesh Hande, R. V. Vimal.
