Dr. Satinder Kumar JainGurugram

Having obtained MCh (CTVS) from Delhi University in 1985, he has trained and practiced general thoracic surgery for last 35 years in some of the finest hospitals in India and abroad. Currently he is Head of Thoracic Surgery at Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon. He is member of IACTS since 2004. He has served as an office bearer of Association of Thoracic & Vascular Surgeons of India (section of ASI – the parent body of IACTS!) for more than 15 years (culminating as its President for 3 years), and also as Governing Council member of ASI (2018). He will be organizing IACTS Thoracic CME 2020. He wishes to use his leadership experience to become the voice of thoracic surgery and take IACTS to greater heights.

General Thoracic surgery has been an integral part of IACTS but for reasons somewhat known and somewhat unknown, the specialty remains subdued. We have a huge population silently suffering from inflammatory lung diseases. Tuberculosis, being endemic in our country, has taken its toll on patients and governments alike. Many of these patients are potentially curable provided they have access to expert opinion and timely intervention by a surgeon specially trained to deal with lung diseases. Lack of dedicated thoracic surgeons has also resulted in abysmal rate of resectability of lung cancer across the country. Trained manpower is the need of the day. National board of examination has DNB Thoracic Surgery program running in 5 centers across India for the last 4 years. However, some inherent drawbacks are obvious. Lack of basic training in cardiac surgery many a times compromises on the safety of the patient and may result in sub-optimal surgical procedure under challenging circumstances.

Having experience in both cardiac and thoracic surgery, he is very concerned about these aspects. The need of the hour is that more CTVSurgeons be trained adequately in general thoracic surgery as well. And that friends, would be a win-win situation for the Association and the community in particular. As Thoracic surgery requires less infrastructure and manpower, one can opt for district level or smaller cities for a more satisfying career rather than a few select metros where decades are spent in anonymity. Out there is a large untapped market with huge gap in supply and demand. CTVSurgeons can utilize their cardiac surgery skills to compliment thoracic surgery. IACTS can play a much bigger and positive role in shaping the future and come to the forefront. He promises to focus all his energy, knowledge, experience and expertise on strengthening IACTS. And for this he needs your support and vote in all his humility and modesty. Your vote is crucial and he exhorts you to vote for a change. Thank you for your patience and precious time. Long Live IACTS.

Bhubaneswar is the capital city of Odisha, recently accepted as the Sports Capital of India. The history of Bhubaneswar may be viewed in two phases: Ancient and Modern . While the ancient city has a history that goes back to more than 3000 years to the Kalinga empire, the modern city came into existence in 1948. Modern Bhubaneswar was designed and planned by German Architect Otto. H. Konigsberger in 1946 to be a well-planned city with wide roads, multiple gardens and parks to shape the city serving as the administrative seat of the state.

The region historically was often depicted as Ekamra Khetra (Temple City). Bhubaneswar is situated between 21°15’ North Latitude 85°15’ Longitude and at an altitude of 45 meters above sea level.

It has witnessed another equally inspiring aspect of development – its remarkable economic growth. Bhubaneswar was the first choice for the flagship Smart City project by the Ministry of Urban Development. It also featured among the top 20 in the Global Smart City Performance Index 2017. Demonstrating world-class infrastructure, accommodation, communication, event location and more, the city is now regarded as one of the best destinations in India for hosting any mega event be it sports, academic or entertainment.

Kolkata has over the years been blessed (and cursed) by a number of appellations. Some complimentary, some not. Even the “City of Joy” label has an ironic origin. Kolkata is also the “City of Palaces”, “City of Processions”, and if you believe the old song and accept a non-PC compliment, “the ladies of Calcutta are sweeter by far”. But let us leave facile labels aside for the moment.Kolkata as a city is very acutely aware of its history. Common knowledge has it that it was formed after the amalgamation of 3 villages after the Europeans came. However there is archaeological evidence of continuous habitation in this area for over two millennia. And the tradition of the Kalighat temple as a “Pithasthan” and pilgrim destination goes back to much earlier legendary times. However it is the last couple of hundred years that has shaped the psyche of modern Kolkata. The city has inspired and been inspired by a number of far reaching movements, reformations and revolutions that have hadtheir roots here. Their scope is wide ranging; be it spiritual, social, political or intellectual both scientific and artistic. These movements and the great souls who were associated with them are not just historical entities here but form a part of everyday consciousness of the city. Also, Kolkatans never tire of reminding themselves and others that the city has been associated with six Nobel Laureates (and are wondering when the chemistry prize will come this way!)Far from the days when Kolkata was the capital of British India, the city still bears the burden and the responsibility of being the only major metropolis in the eastern quadrant of the country. It is home to people from every state and they all imbue the city with its variegated and cosmopolitan flavor. And this contributes to the vibrant cultural landscape as well. Yet in spite of its reputation of being the spiritual home of “The Argumentative Indian”, the whole environment is that of harmonious co-existence. This contributes to Kolkata being among safest of cities to wander around and explore. And the flavor can be tasted

quite literally, whether in posh restaurants or humble street corners and all possible grades of eateries in between. As one would expect, Kolkata is a very crowded city but getting around is less arduous than in many other cities of similar size in the world. Also there are many oases of green around, and one is never far away from a playground or park where formal or informal games are ever ongoing. And of course there is always the beneficent breeze from the Ganga permeating the city at all seasons. Visitors to Kolkata often comment on the warmth of the people here, and those who live here take that for granted. In February when the IACTS annual meeting takes place, the weather is very pleasant, and the warmth that one would feel will be of the welcome afforded.
