    1 GENERAL

    This calculation comprises the riser to DOKAAE (Tower C). The dimensions has been taken from both lines in drwg. M-PTC-RD-CHW-41950, Rev.2. In each case the longer part has been taken into account. This is at the bottom of the riser the CWS line and on top the CWR line. Following this assumption it is guaranteed that the worst condition is considered in any case.

    These computations aim at determining both the stresses and deformations occurring in the pipeline as well as the support reactions at operating condition.

    It is a precondition that all supports from sliding type are equipped with teflon layers. To avoid forces in the piping and in the support structures they have to allow a certain movement of the pipe.

    The static system and the computation is based on the following documents and drawing:

    2 STATIC SYSTEM

    The static system is an elastically embedded three-dimensional series of finite elements. It consists of straight and bent elements, connected by nodes. The reduced stiffness in the bends (flexibility factor according to ANSI Code) has been taken into account. The support conditions are simulated by elastic spring elements which are acting in nodes. The elastic or plastic (non-linear) behaviour of the support is defined by three constants of displacement and three constants of distortion.

    In the buried sections the bedding conditions are modelled by non-linear (plastic) springs acting in the nodes. In the model, the elastic range of the spring is increased up to limit values which horizontally represent soil failure conditions, which vertically represent uplift conditions limited by the weight of the earth body, and which longitudinally represent the frictions between the pipe and the soil. For deformations which exceed these limits constant spring forces are assumed. In the present case no buried sections occur.

    The structural analysis, on the one hand, is performed using the cross sections of the pipe (i.e. the initially ordered pipe wall thickness not including any allowances or tolerances). Any wall thickness reduction is not taken into account. By adopting this approach the highest

    stiffnesses acting on the static system analyzed, and consequently the greatest cross-sectional forces are obtained, which constitute the upper limit values covering the worst case condition.

    The computation of stresses, on the other hand, is performed taking the relevant wall thickness reduction (e.g. allowances and tolerances) into account.

    The static system has been depicted in the plots attached.

    3 LOADS

    3.1 Dead Load (Permanent Load)

    The pipe weight is automatically computed bases upon the cross-sectional areas using a specific gravity of 78.5 kN/m. The relevant weights induced by valves and other components are taken into account as single loads. The weight of the insulation is considered with 0.300 kN/m.

    3.2 Temperature Change

    The maximum temperature at pipe installation is +45C

    The operation temperature is in: Chilled Water Supply Line (to DOKAAE): +5C Chilled Water Return Line (from DOKAAE): +14C

    The biggest effective change in temperature occurs in CHWS-line and is -40C

    As a worst case scenario the same temperature change of -40C is assumed to occur in CHWR-Riser to DOKAAE.

    3.3 Weight of Medium (Live Load)

    The medium to be transported is water. The weight is calculated automatically from the pipe cross sectional data. The specific gravity is 10 kN/m.

    This is valid for el. 1-5, 44-46 and 71-75.

    For el. 6 45 this is the vertical riser the weight of the water column is acting in node 6 as a vertical force:

    Lower section (DN 1300):

    3.4 Internal Pressure

    The effective internal pressure in the piping is the max. operating pressure. This pressure is for:

    Chilled Water Supply Line (to DOKAAE): 16 bar = 1600 kN/m Chilled Water Return Line (from DOKAAE): 12 bar = 1200 kN/m

    As a worst case scenario: The higher pressure of 16 bar is assumed to occur also in CHWR-line at the level of the piping in the tunnel. (At lower end of riser). At the upper end of the riser (at level distribution floor) this pressure is reduced by the effect of difference-in-height. This difference is approx. 80 m and this results in a pressure of 16 bar 8 bar = 8 bar

    The pressure forces are:

    in node 6: 1.29542 x 4II

    x 800 =1055 kN

    in node 44: 0.89542 x 4II

    x 800 = 504 kN

    in node 25 551 kN (at reducer) The influence of the Poisson effect has with a Poissons ratio of 0.30 been included in the computation in el. 1-5, 71-75 and 45-46.

    In the vertical riser the poisson-effect is taken into account as a change-in temperature which creates the same contraction as poisson-effect. This change-in-temperature is:

    4 LOAD CASES

    The following load cases are investigated in the present calculation:

    LC1: Operation: Dead Load + Weight of Water + Temperature + Pressure LC 2: Dead Load + Weight of Water This LC is only calculated to determine the biggest load acting downward in the upper support in the shaft. (El. 402 at level approx. + 314.3)

    5 SAFETY FACTORS

    5.1 Hoop Stress (Ring Tensile Stress) S (R)

    The internal pressure design of the entire piping system is performed using a safety factor of 1.39 (Design factor = 0.72 acc. to ANSI B31.4). The same is applicable to bends, branches, and other fittings.

    The safety against reaching the steels minimum yield strength for the hoop stress is: S(R): S = 1.39.

    5.2 Longitudinal Stresses S (L)

    The longitudinal stresses in the systems are predominantly induced by hindered thermal expansion or contraction.

    Acc. to ANSI B31.4, 402.3.2 (d) the sum of the longitudinal stress due to pressure, weight and other sustained external loadings shall not exceed 75 % of the allow. stresses value SA which is 72 % of the spec. yield strength of the pipe. In the present case also the influence of change-in-temperature is included. This assumption represents the worst case and includes additional safety.

    The safety against reaching the steels minimum yield strength for the longitudinal stress therefore is:

    S(L):S = 1.85. The design factor is 0.72 x 0.75 = 0.54.

    5.3 Equivalent Stress S(E)

    The equivalent stress (equivalent intensity of combined stresses) is calculated according to the distortion energy theory. The admissible value is assumed to be 90 % of the steels yield strength.

    The safety against reaching the steels minimum yield strength for the equivalent stress is :

    S(E):S = 1.11. The degree of utilization is 0.90.

    6 RESULTS

    The computation results have been listed in the printouts attached. The respective dimensions used are [kN] and [m]. In the printouts, the deformations and stresses have been multiplied by 1000. The respective dimensions used are [mm] and N[N/mm].

    6.1 Deformations

    The node deformations have been listed in the printouts attached. For LC1 the deformation has furthermore been depicted in plots.

    6.2 Support Reactions

    The supports in the horizontal part of the piping have been simulated by vertical spring elements. The local co-ordinate system has been arranged in such a way that the element axis is identical with the local x-axis, which results in:

    Support Reaction Forces and Movements:

    Supports in vertical shaft: see plot attached!

    Support at lower riser end: (el 902)

    vertical force F = 2000 kN horizontal forces in all directions F = 9 kN

    Support in the lower tunnel (el. 607):

    Support 607: Fv = 240 kN

    Fv = vertical Force

    The extreme movements the supports have to allow for are:

    movement in direction of pipe axis: v = 2 mm movement transverse to pipe axis: v = 3 mm

    The effect of friction horizontal forces has to be considered using a friction factor of 0.10 (teflon layer) in the design of the supports.

    All support forces are for one pipe and without dead weight of the supporting structure.

    6.3 Stresses

    The computation of stresses is performed taking the relevant wall thickness reductions (e.g. allowances and tolerances) into account.

    The stresses derived by computation have been listed in printouts and compared with the admissible values. The stresses obtained by computation have in the bends already been multiplied by the stress intensification factor according to ANSI. Stresses exceeding the admissible values have been marked.

    At the end of each stress table the maximum values of each type of stress encountered have been compiled and the number of exceeded admissible values has been indicated.

    The result revealed that the admissible stresses are not exceeded. The system thus is sufficiently flexible and safe.

    6.4 Victaulic Couplings in Riser:

    In vertical riser seven flexible couplings are foreseen to allow for contraction of the piping. In operation condition the max. gap movement is:

    at the top V.C. (el 507)

    This is the biggest ocurring gap movement.

    V = 8.35+1.66 = 10.01 mm

    The other gap movements are:

    el 501: 4.90+2.21 = 7.11 mm el 502: 4.88+2.34 = 7.22 mm el 503: 4.85+2.35 = 7.20 mm el 504: 4.42+2.30 = 6.81 mm el 505: 4.80+1.61 = 6.41 mm el 506: 5.04+1.92 = 6.96 mm

    These values include the effects of change-in-temperature and pressure.

    The min. gap at construction must be 2.0 mm at any point around the circumference. This ensures that the pipes are not subject to thermal forces when they are out of operation and an increase of temperature of not more than 10C compared to the assembling temperature occurs.
