They defeated St. William’s 57-26. The “Green 7th” jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. With a tight zone defense, all players contributed to the win. Kyle Grasser, Shane McGuigan, and Patrick Kane led the way with smart passing and team leadership. Ahkil Thakur and Derek Boupdelmonte hit several nice shots during the game. Thomas Narbutt and Dean Rivera did a great job on the boards for Kane’s Crew to help the effort. We cannot overlook other contributors to the first win: Joshua Spears, Michael Zaslow and Jay Widmann. Jay Greene’s new “Gold 8th” is off to a 0-2 start. With many new members aboard, Greene is trying to find combinations to put his team in the win column. Matt Greene, James Lewandowski, Peter Simone, John Medford, Sean Reynolds, Michael Fury, Greg Brenton, Mike Millan, Terrance Wakely, Jack McKerle and Bobby Schoendorf represent this group of hard-nosed players. The “8th Green” played very well at St. William, winning their third game with only one defeat. Ryan Griffin led all scorers with 14 points. Michael Aspras continued his fine play on the boards and on the defensive end. With Danny Kim out with an injury, Chris O’Malley stepped up his play to aid the win. “St. Martin’s Basketball Saturday” had four exciting games on Dec. 7 at Central Blvd. Although only one of the four teams won, all games were very competitive and down to the wire. The “Green 5th” fell behind 13- 4 in the first quarter to St. Brigid’s (2- 0). This lead was too much to overcome. Using a team concept with tight defense and rebounding, Kyle Tracy and Robbie Cafiero brought the boys back. Others who played well included Michael Rae with solid defense and Brendan Carr who hit a couple of clutch shots. The final score was a 32-27 loss. An undefeated St. Ignatius team beat the “5th grade Gold” by two points. The team play of St. Martin’s was consistent throughout. Anthony Santorelli hit clutch shots. Will Bergesen and Jordan Mayr continue their all-around play. James Constantine, Conor Reilly, and Conor McGuigan showed grit and determination on the defensive end. Both 5th grade squads could not overcome the “one-man” show of the opposing teams. With all players participating and contributing, St. Martin’s will defeat the “one-man” style teams. Andy Haugen’s 6th “Green” team ran into the same problem. A two- point loss was hard to take by the “Green” squad. They played hard and fiery through the game. Jimmy Haugen was solid and Kevin Bickard led many fast breaks nicely. Similar to the fifth grade teams, an opposing “one” player did most of the scoring. St. Martin’s team- concept will carry them in future games. Tom Gallo’s “Gold 6th” team was the only winner on “St. Martin’s Saturday.” The outcome looked dreary in the first quarter for Gallo’s Gold. They were behind 10-0. Slowly but surely with Dominic Volpe and Anthony Martingano clearing the boards and Andrew Sengstacken hitting key shots the St. Martin’s team climbed back in the game. Thomas Gallo and Daniel Scime showed poise and leadership in the second half to secure the 2- point win. The two fifth grade squads played terrific at home on Dec. 14. Both came away with victories. In the early game Greg Luti’s solid passing and floor play led the “Green 5th” to a 45-34 win over previously undefeated St. Patrick’s. Once again, Kyle Tracy manned the boards. Gavin Stewart and Brendan Carr helped clear rebounds, too. Jesse Signa scored consistently, while Nick Vasco, and Robbie Cafiero hit important shots. Vinnie Volpe, Michael Rae and Anthony Imperato also were key contributors. The “Gold 5th” defeated St. Dominic’s by ten. Ryan Donnelly had a nice shooting touch during the game. AJ Zonin led the offense in the early going. As the game entered the fourth quarter Will Bergesen and Anthony Santorelli sealed the win with key baskets. Two other St. Martin home, games occurred in midweek. Both were exciting two point losses that were decided in the last minute of play. The Monday game was the opener for Joe Gucciardo’s 6th grade boys against St. Ignatius. His team played solid man-to-man defense throughout. Barry Cook led the way with several rebounds and blocked shots. The team effort included five boys who scored at least four points including Danny Fleischman, Barry Cook, Greg Riso, Alex Mignone and John Grillea. Joe Gucciardo led most of the fast breaks with several assists. The seventh grade girls played a defensive battle against St. Josephs. With the game looking out of reach, Kathleen McGrath scored six straight points within the last two minutes to almost put them over the top. The comeback was 2 points short. All girls played a strong zone defense during the game. The Coaches, Players, and Fans of St. Martin’s Basketball would like to take this time to wish all of you A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!
