church in Washington but it is one of the influeniial When it comes to raising nuney for the missions or for any cause in which the church is interested no church is more prompt in its re- sponse nor sends in a larger contribut- ion than does old Zion For more than fourteen years Rev W J Howard the present pastor of the church has held the reins and to quote from another he has built a up Kingdom of bisown He is a man of most remarkable and interesting personality and be deals with hIS church as ne does with his Gjd and his family The ambition hits life and hi greatest labor love is to lOOK success in life She was a member- of 19th Street Baptist church Four of their eight children belong to that church William James jr is at Exe- ter preparing for Harvard After the death of Rev Wm Gibbons who had charge of Zon Baptist church for near- ly eighteen y ars Rev Howard took charge This was in and since that time Rev Howard has received more than 2000 members into the church has built a new church which ooPt including the ground etc 45 000 and has contributed to church and missionary work regularly The church- is now out of debt and has a surplus in the Capital Savings Bank Rev Howard is a race wan and be lieves in Negro enterprises He is in favor of the home mission schools from which he received so much help as a youth He believes in the Negro press and the Negro pulpit and the officers and members of his church concur with his views and cooperate with him in every way He supports twentyfive race papers and is a stock holder in several publications Of his eight children two are teaching one pon is a graduate of the High 8chool and was captain of Co B the winning company of the High School last year He is now at Exeter preparing to eater Harvard col- iege his church and Sunday Among the strongest supporters and workers in the church might be Mrs Julia Taylor Mr J Brown and Mrs Bell Lewis some of whom have been earnest workers in the church for years
