Christmas Dinner Fundraiser – We are hosting a Christmas Dinner special social event this year to provide an opportunity for residents and their family members to enjoy a festive meal together and to raise funds for the SLL Foundation in support of our resident bed replacement drive. Details of this new event are shown on page 6.

Changes Coming to SLL Newletter and Activation Calendar Distribution

In an effort to make the Newsletter and Activation Calendar more readily accessible to our readers, starting in January 2018, the Newsletter and Calendar will be available for pick-up anytime at the Security Desk at the Main Entrance rather than in the Business Office. Please note that the Newsletter will no longer be distributed through the monthly billing to save mailing costs. Both the Newsletter and Calendar are also posted regularly for viewing on the Home’s web site at www.stll.org. We hope that you will find that these changes will improve overall access to these documents.

This is a brief notice that the Home will only be issuing “Summary of Accommodation” reports for the 2017 taxation year. These forms will be prepared for the 2017 tax year and mailed out for each resident in January 2018. Please note that St. Lawrence Lodge does not make any representation regarding the deductibility of the above amounts on income tax returns. It should also be noted that St. Lawrence Lodge is a Municipally-owned Long Term Care Home and does not pay property taxes. This, too, may affect entries related to the Ontario Tax Credit for residents.

Volunteers are needed for Family Council. If you are family, or friend of a resident who lives on Oak, Spruce, Maple, or Pine Lodge, then Family Council invites you to consider joining. The time commitment involves one meeting per month on the 3rd Tuesday at 1:30 pm for approximately 2 hours. If interested, then please contact Pam Moorhouse, Family Council Chair, at 613-345-5589.

For Residents and Family Members

The St. Lawrence Lodge Family Council respects the mission of St. Lawrence Lodge and offers support to residents, families, and staff at the Home. The Family Council advocates for all residents, families and caregivers, in particular, for those residents unable to advocate for themselves.

The Council promotes open communication. The Family Council will make suggestions and recommendations for change and improvements by being a forum for ideas and dialogue. The Council will endeavour to become more knowledgeable about the long term care sector and the operations of the Home and it will work to educate its members and other family members of residents.

Christmas Calendar of Events – Our Activation Calendar will be brimming with special events and celebrations throughout the month of December. Please be sure to check the calendar regularly for coming events and we hope you take the opportunity to enjoy this festive time with our residents. Christmas Decorating Week – The Home will be putting up its Christmas decorations during the latter part of November and early December to create a fun, festive mood for all residents and their guests to enjoy. Christmas Decorating Guidelines – The Home has prepared Christmas Decorating Guidelines to assist residents in making decisions about their Christmas decorating plans. These Decorating Guidelines are intended to honour resident wishes to decorate for Christmas, while maintaining fire safety and resident safety principles. For your information, a copy of the Guidelines is attached to this newsletter. Please contact the Nursing Department should you have any questions. Christmas Season Room Reservation Bookings – all residents and families wishing to reserve a room for a private celebration during the Christmas season must call Dawn Dodge directly to confirm your reservation. Dawn can be reached at 613-345-0255 ext. 4122. All room reservations are only done through a central office so it is important for you to have your reservation confirmed directly by Dawn. Christmas Day Meals - The Home is not able to provide meals for purchase on Christmas Day. However, resident guests are free to bring a festive meal to the Home. The Fireside Lounge will be available on Christmas Day as space for residents and their families who may wish to share a Christmas meal together. Tables and chairs will be set up, along with microwave ovens to heat food. Coffee and tea will be provided by the Home. All guests using the area are asked to please keep the area clean and tidy for other users. Resident Overnight Leave of Absence – In preparation for the Christmas Season, for those residents and families who plan to be away from the Home overnight, it is important that we have advance notice of your intentions to be away. We would request that you contact Kerry Emmons in the Nursing Office to advise her of your plans. Kerry can be reached at 613-345-0255 ext 4115. The Nursing Department will work with the resident and family to coordinate the medical supplies needed during the time away from the Home. Labeling of Resident Clothing – Don’t forget that resident personal clothing items need to have a St. Lawrence Lodge-provided label attached. Arrangements can be made in advance of Christmas to have clothing items labeled before wrapping your gifts. Please bring your gift items into the Home early so they are labeled and ready for wear after the gifts are opened. Scented Products Reminder—St. Lawrence Lodge promotes a scent free environment. Scented products can trigger serious health reactions for some residents and staff. The Home requests that people refrain from wearing perfumes, colognes, and other scented products. Please consider this in your gift-giving decisions. Thank you for your cooperation in making our Home a scent free environment.
