Instead of gathering around the deity of Jesus (unity) we have assembled around our differences and claimed we have a right to make our opinions and preferences, doctrine. The echo through the scriptures is clear, we are “one body” (Romans 12:4, 5; I Corinthians 12:12, 13, 20; Eph 2:16; Col 3:15). When we consider the souls which need saving today, it will make a difference in our lives as to whom we identify as the saved and the lost. Christianity and therefore Christians must be distinct in their identity as God’s people. Too many today gladly hold the mantle of Jesus Christ, but few embrace the responsibility which comes with wearing His name. Much of our confusion in matters of faith, believing what is right from wrong, and how we live as Christians, has been more than muddled through the words and terms we use to identify our faith. When the church was dealing with division within, Paul cautiously reminded, “God is not the author of confusion” (I Corinthians 14:33). Paul warned his son in the faith, Timothy that in, “latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” (I Timothy 4:1). This would also be a warning worth repeating, and thus Paul would write to Timothy once more, “For the time will come when men will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers, and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (II Timothy 4:3-4). Yes, as many opinions of faith exist as there are people. But confusion of truth does not come from God. Man is the sole proprietor of the commodity of confusion. There is one faith and one faith only, and some can and will depart from it; and there is such a thing as sound doctrine (whole teaching) to which we yield, knowing such wholeness will bring us into the holiness that is our Lord Jesus. The volume of the cry of the oneness of the church may be losing clarity, but the truth of such a call has always remained clear and constant, just as the word of God itself (John 17:17). As we as God’s people, His church, strive to reach out to the lost, even those who may be faithful in a form of faith, but not “the faith” (Acts 6:7), renewal to the clarity of the truth must be present in our message. At the same time, we cannot omit the crucial motivation and timbre of the gospel message: love. No, the pursuit is not an exchange between the right heart over the wrong doctrine. It’s the desire for both a right heart and the right teaching of our Lord. Jesus Christ instructed this as our identity to be built of love (John 13:35). The Holy Spirit revealed it as the way to speak truth (Ephesians 4:15). God overwhelmed us with it when He surrendered His Son for our sins (Romans 5:8). This is the distinction above all others which points us to the church, to the cross. I hope you know, the desire to share our day of “Endeavor” (September 27, 3pm, HCHS Auditorium) is to declare to hearts we love, the truth of our Lord Jesus, our love in becoming more like Him, and the joy of awaiting His return.

“I Hope You Know”

I Surrender All

Weak is the cry today from too many pulpits about the

distinctiveness of the church and the oneness of the body of Christ. Instead of gathering around the deity of Jesus

(unity) we have assembled around our differences and claimed we have a right to make our opinions and

preferences, doctrine. The echo through the scriptures is clear, we are “one body” (Romans 12:4, 5; I Corinthians

12:12, 13, 20; Eph 2:16; Col 3:15). When we consider the souls which need saving today, it will make a difference in

our lives as to whom we identify as the saved and the lost.

Christianity and therefore Christians must be distinct in their identity as God’s people. Too many today gladly hold

the mantle of Jesus Christ, but few embrace the responsibility which comes with wearing His name.

Much of our confusion in matters of faith, believing what is

right from wrong, and how we live as Christians, has been more than muddled through the words and terms we use to

identify our faith. When the church was dealing with division within, Paul cautiously reminded, “God is not the

author of confusion” (I Corinthians 14:33). Paul warned his son in the faith, Timothy that in, “latter times some will

depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” (I Timothy 4:1). This would also be a

warning worth repeating, and thus Paul would write to

Timothy once more, “For the time will come when men will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own

desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers, and they will turn their ears away

from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (II Timothy 4:3-4). Yes, as many opinions of faith exist as there are

people. But confusion of truth does not come from God. Man is the sole proprietor of the commodity of confusion.

There is one faith and one faith only, and some can and will

depart from it; and there is such a thing as sound doctrine (whole teaching) to which we yield, knowing such

wholeness will bring us into the holiness that is our Lord Jesus.

The volume of the cry of the oneness of the

church may be losing clarity, but the truth of such a call has always remained clear and

constant, just as the word of God itself (John 17:17). As we as God’s people, His church,

strive to reach out to the lost, even those who may be faithful in a form of faith, but not “the

faith” (Acts 6:7), renewal to the clarity of the truth must be present in our message. At the

same time, we cannot omit the crucial

motivation and timbre of the gospel message: love. No, the pursuit is not an exchange

between the right heart over the wrong doctrine. It’s the desire for both a right heart

and the right teaching of our Lord.

Jesus Christ instructed this as our identity to be

built of love (John 13:35). The Holy Spirit revealed it as the way to speak truth (Ephesians

4:15). God overwhelmed us with it when He surrendered His Son for our sins (Romans 5:8).

This is the distinction above all others which points us to the church, to the cross. I hope you know, the desire to share our day of “Endeavor” (September 27, 3pm, HCHS

Auditorium) is to declare to hearts we love, the

truth of our Lord Jesus, our love in becoming more like Him, and the joy of awaiting His

return.

TESTING THE NEW LIGHTHOUSE… We had a crowd for the first official Lighthouse of the

school year. Close to 60 Junior & Senior High were on hand to enjoy the time together as

well as a delicious meal. Thanks to Chris, Cyndi, and Bryce Hughes for hosting the

night! WE ALSO KICKED OFF the 5th

Quarters with a crowd of around 75. Thanks

to the many who came and to Misty and Mark Bentley for helping chaperone the

evening. Be sure to note, because of Homecoming we will not have a 5th Quarter

on the 11th, but will return on the 18th. IT WAS A TREAT TO RING THE OVER

100 YEAR OLD BELL. Several of us had the privilege to ring the bell to begin services at

the Coble Church of Christ. Our young men

did an outstanding job in every aspect of leading services. Colby Shelton and Griffin

Elkins led the singing, Riley Qualls and Grady Teet led prayers, Jake Martin and

Carter Shelton led the Lord’s Supper. Luke Worsham did a fantastic job as he

challenged us to define our relationship with God. We also had several other young

men and young ladies who went along for

support. Add the several parents, grandparents, and family that joined us too,

pushed attendance close to 60! We look forward to going again November 29th.

Plan now to join us! SUNDAY UP ON THE HILL… Sparks &

Intermediates, we will be at Camp Meribah Sunday for a cookout and a time to play!

We will supply the hotdogs and burgers, we

need to girls to bring desserts and the guys to bring chips. We will begin at 11:30 and

end up around 2:00. Invite your friends! IF YOU ARE GOING TO RUSH… I

need your $20 by Sunday night so I can secure who is going! This will cover the cost

the registration and for your t-shirt. You will also need money for two meals on your

own on the 19th. It will be an unforgettable

day that you do not want to miss! Last day to sign up is Sunday! WE HAVE A FULL SLATE OF THINGS HAPPENING, but nothing is more important

than regular attendance at worship! Make every effort to be present to praise our Lord

while encouraging one another! Always…

follow His path, -Craig
