Just to prove that I like living on the edge, I did run the gas out of my snow blower and put it away until the snow

flies in August (just kidding!) I would like to apologize ahead of time that this issue of the Cruz News may not be

quite up to my usual standards of publication excellence. Our lives are in a little bit of an upheaval as I write this.

We are staying at the Country Inn & Suites in my hometown, Marquette, Michigan. Recent events have made it

imperative that we move my mom out of her senior complex apartment and into a nursing care facility. I think most

of you can understand what we are going through as many of you have been there, as well. As you can guess,

mom is not taking this well which adds to the stress of the whole process. Mom is 96, and we had expected to

have gone through this some time ago, but her tough Finnish genes have proven us wrong. The Finnish word for

this is “Sisu.” If these genes should carry on to me, I plan to take better care of myself! Again, there may be some

information missing that’s sitting on my desk in Burnsville that won’t make it into this issue, mainly, some of the car

show information on page three will be missing. I would encourage you to check the Linechaser or Autoswalk to fill

in the missing data.

On a brighter note, Lil Darlin’ passed the MSRA inspection on May 12, getting that “23” sticker for 2018. The emer-

gency brake cables which posed some problems in the past, held and kept the car from moving ahead in drive.

Whew! The tension was released from the cables, not to be used again until the next inspection in 2019. There

was a good turn out at the inspection, but I did notice a shortage of Southern Cruzer cars. As I have said many

times before, they are there not to make fun of your car, but to make sure it is safe for you and your family, and all

the other drivers on the road. They often find little problems that were missed when you did your cursory inspection

at the start of the season.

It’s June and time for all hot blooded rodders to think, “Back to the Fifties!” If I can make it through the gates with

Lil Darlin’, this will be the 34th consecutive year that we have been there with a life time of memories to boot. As

you very well know, where we end up parking is anybody’s guess, but if you see me riding my lawn chair and talk-

ing smart, stop in to say hello. I will also be working the model car show in the Grandstand. The young people

building the models on display are the future of our hobby. Stop by and give them your support. Otherwise, enjoy

the Fifties weekend, and we will see you out there somewhere. DB

ROASTED PEAR HOSTS THE “LADIES’ NIGHT OUT”

On Tuesday, May 22, The Roasted Pear in Burnsville was the dining

choice for the ladies of the Southern Cruzers. Sixteen ladies were in

attendance to enjoy the good conversation and food. This outing

was the last of the season and will resume again in September. This

gives all us guys a chance to rack up a bunch of antics over the

summer giving the ladies plenty of fodder to talk about when that

September time comes around. They always claim that they don’t

talk about cars, or the drivers of the cars! Sorry, no photos came

out of the Roasted Pear, so I am inserting this one that I like so

much. (Now after studying this photo, I think these four ladies

should hook up with the three guys from the cover photo!)

SOUTHERN CRUZER CAR CLUB

MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES - May 16, 2018, Taken by Duane Barclay

In the absence of President Ed Sanders, Vice President Jack Keenan called the membership meeting of the

Southern Cruzers to order at 7:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was observed.

Secretary’s report: A motion was made by Ron Willson and seconded by Jerry Larsen to accept the minutes of

the April 2018 meeting as printed in the Cruz News.

Treasurer’s report: Dick Lidbom read the treasurer’s report. Tim Hanna made a motion to approve the report.

The motion was seconded by Karen Keenan, and the motion passed. A call for bills was made. Karen Keenan

submitted a bill for $278.00 to cover the Dakota County Assemblage Permit which is included in the Summer

Spectacular budget. Joy Hanna made a motion to pay the bill, seconded by Jerry Larsen, and the motion

passed.

Membership Chairperson: Jim Neher reported that club membership is the same as last month with 92 (164 to-

tal). Club rosters also remain the same as the last meeting. Jim had club window stickers, and the usual club car

plaques on sale for $20.00.

Events: Anita Brown reported that the Ladies’ Night Out for May is scheduled for Tuesday, May 22, 5 p.m., at the

Roasted Pear in Burnsville. Anita also reported that this will be the last ladies event until next September. Tim

Hanna reported that the club will be hosting the first Hastings Night Out event on June 2. They would like to have

eight workers covering two shifts (5 - 7 & 7 - 9 p.m.). Tim listed club members currently on the worker’s list. If you

are interested in working a shift, contact Tim at 952-894-2395. A club caravan going to Hastings will leave the

Dakota County Maintenance Facility, Hwy 3 & Hwy 46, at 4 p.m.

Old Business: None

New Business: Jack Keenan reported that he sent out nine hard copies of the May Cruz News.

TSS Business: Karen Keenan reported that the TSS worker’s list has been posted. It is assumed that our mem-

bers who have worked the event before will be coming forth to do their same jobs this year. It is also assumed

that Tshirt sizes will be the same. Any member wanting to volunteer for a position, change position, or change

Tshirt sizes should contact Karen to make any changes. Karen reported that Leo’s South is in to be a $300.00

sponsor. Mary Ann & Dick Clemmer and Dick Tschida are also back as Sponsors. Tim Hanna reported that we

lost three big sponsors which include: Quik Trip, NAPA, and Dakota Electric. The club has lost one third of its

sponsors from previous years, and we need to make a push to fill in the missing numbers. Members are encour-

aged to seek out sponsors on their own, or give any ideas to Karen Keenan or Tim Hanna. Jim Neher reported

that there is one car pre-registered for the show.

MSRA News: Terry Stade didn’t have any MSRA news to report on, but he did want to remind members of the

upcoming car show at the Savage American Legion Club on Sunday, May 20.

The next meeting will be at Apple Valley Ford in Apple Valley on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at 7 p.m. A motion

to adjourn the meeting was made by Joy Hanna, seconded by Donna Larsen, and the motion carried. The meet-

ing was adjourned.

WE SAY GOODBYE TO DICK BALLMAN

On April 26, long time Southern Cruzer member, Rich-

ard (Dick) Ballman lost his battle with cancer. Dick &

wife Linda were always active in the club, and Dick had

a good sense of humor, always laughing at our jokes

whether they were good or bad. Our condolences to
