What is celebratory drinking?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Research has identified specific events, including holidays (e.g., New Years), school breaks (e.g., Spring Break) and personally relevant events (e.g., 21st birthdays), that are associated with elevated risk of heavy drinking and negative alcohol-related consequences. Evaluation of relative-risk offers insights into event-specific drinking and allows us to more effectively consider how we allocate limited prevention resources Intervention approaches which seek to curtail college student behaviour without considering the variability of drinking behaviour may not be effective - particularly in regard to specific events associated with celebratory drinking which may be unique to different campuses. (Neighbors 2007) The significance of these events to the campus, and by extension the prevalence of and the attitude towards drinking practice around these events is influenced by the underlying campus culture. Therefore it is becomes necessary to consider the interface of campus culture and how attacking event-specific interventions can be tools to change the culture. This is the jekyl and hyde of drinking culture and these events serve as rallying points for change. The pledge campaigns I will describe are around celebratory drinking although pledges can be for many different things – https://www.researchgate.net/publication/267730816_Event-Specific_Drinking_in_the_General_Population https://www.pinterest.com/pin/309270699394068140

What are the stages of change?

• The pace of change is variable

• Knowledge alone usually doesn’t lead to change

What exactly is a behavioral pledge?? 6

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Behavioral pledge is an action stage that helps motivate further action (research shows that pledging to do something motivates behavior but also that having concrete action steps gives people something to default to in times of crisis) but the way we raise awareness through swag -> social norms (more people than I thought are acting in a certain way) and that can reach those in other stages of change – particularly those who are contemplating.

Pledge languageWhat specifically is your pledge trying to achieve?

How can your language help you to reach that goal?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Conduct focus groups Ask faculty overseers what they believe to be best with wording https://mythicscribes.com/world-building/crafting-a-language/ Harry potter reference here (divination?)

This is not just a campus campaign its something we are doing nationally PUT THE MOST FOCUS ON CREATING THE PLEDGE AROUND THE HIGH RISK EVENT! This is the most important piece. A bit of time on audience, what is problem, who is ur target, is it everyone? Is it first years on Halloween? Now what is a reasonable pledge?

• Practicing safer drinking habits if I choose to drink through:o Alternating drinks with water or other non-alcoholic beverageso Avoiding “punches” and other drinks I did not make myself

• Being an active bystander by intervening or getting help in problem situations• Knowing the PUBS symptoms of overdose and calling 911 if I see even one of those symptoms• Using the buddy system and helping my friends get home safely

Presentation Notes
Research shows that incentivized pledging increases the likelihood of follow through by those who pledge We found from our own research that the number of pledge is not influenced by the size of the prize – merely by the existence of it We did pledge campaigns where 20 random winner won $500 and also tests pledging with small prizes such as water bottles and there was no significant difference in the number Send a google survey on the types of swag people want. Don’t just go off of your own perceptions. Show examples of swag we have used at UVA and nationally. - Holly has these

Events surrounding the pledge campaign

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Think about events that could bring people out to pledge, to learn about healthy behaviors, or to gain some perspective on some of the issues you are attempting to address! Something you may find difficult with respect to marketing is that there tends to be fatigue with how often you will be pinging people with emails and ads! Try to switch up what you are marketing or who is doing the marketing (e.g a dean of students or class council sending the emails for you!) to prevent this. The fact that you have new events inherently will do the same thing.

Be Prepared

Have a schedule Know where you need to be and when + who needs to be there +

who needs to be contacted Do you have rain locations? If you have supplies you need to bring, be sure to know how to

transport them (cars help!) and be there early. Invest in trolleys especially if you have to transport t shirts or large boxes of supplies.

Keep up constant communication and have printed instruction sheets
