Middle School Scheduling: Period Schedules with Small Group Instructionminutes

*The amount of time for periods (e.g., 45 minutes, 50 minutes) may vary. Scheduling timing can be modified as needed to reflect these variations.

** For Diagnostic-only educators, i-Ready Online Instruction can be replaced with whole class instruction, small group instruction, or a different rotational station (e.g., Math or Literacy Center).

The following schedules show how educators can integrate three types of instruction into a typical week:

• differentiated small group instruction

• on-grade level whole class instruction

• 45 minutes of personalized Online Instruction

These schedules reflect 50-minute periods for either reading or mathematics each day,* with a series of examples showing a progression from weekly to daily small group instruction in the classroom. In all examples, students are able to achieve 45 minutes of i-Ready Online Instruction each week.**

By starting small, all educators are able to begin the process of integrating small group instruction, and over time may be able to move to less whole class instruction and more small group instruction as they become more comfortable with the planning and coordination of small groups. Note that the ability to transition to multiple days of small group work will depend on the time required to implement whole class instructional programs.

For more information on creating small groups and planning for small group instruction, refer to the Middle School: Tips for Planning Small Group Instruction document.

The teacher creates three small groups of students: below, on, and above grade level. During the small group teacher-led instruction for 15 minutes once a week, she/he focuses on common student needs. While not working with the teacher, students either complete independent work or collaborative work. During rotations, classroom computers are used for additional time for students who may have been absent or need more time based on their progress. All students complete i-Ready Online Instruction once a week in the computer lab or in the classroom.*

Teacher sets aside 5 minutes at the beginning of the period to explain each group’s work at the independent and collaborative work stations and to answer any questions before students begin their rotations.

*Finding enough time in your schedule for whole class instruction and i-Ready Online Instruction given technology availability can be difficult. In order to allow for a better balance of whole class and Online Instruction needs, consider an Intervention Schedule as an alternate option.

The teacher includes two days with a rotational small group schedule. Based on the timing for groups, the teacher is able to meet with four small groups of students once each week to better meet the needs of all her/his students. All students meet their Time on Task goal of 45 minutes each week using classroom computers. The teacher monitors student lesson alerts and percent of lessons passed using Online Instruction data.

In order to maximize online and small group instruction, the teacher uses rotations three days a week to ensure that she/he meets with all students during the course of the week. To help with student engagement and motivation when working on computers for an extended period of time, the teacher incorporates data chats into Online Instruction time.

To maximize whole class and small group instruction, the teacher meets with a small group each day in the classroom. This allows her/him to meet with each group once a week for 25 minutes for targeted teacher-led instruction. The groups not working with the teacher each day are at a designated station: Independent Work, Collaborative Group Work, or additional Online Instruction. All students complete i-Ready Online Instruction once a week in the computer lab to help them reach their Time on Task goals. The teacher also monitors Online Instruction data for student lesson alerts and percent of lessons passed.

The teacher maximizes the use of classroom computers for i-Ready Online Instruction and small group instruction. The teacher strategically has above-grade level students only on Online Instruction once per week for enrichment, because their Time on Task goals are flexible. Since Tuesday and Friday are the same schedule, this allows the teacher flexibility to work with smaller subgroups of students from the below-grade level student group on those days for her/his teacher-led instruction.

Activities done in rotations. Groups that will participate in the rotation block are noted below it.

Small groups doing an activity. Because this is a scheduled intervention time, an assumption has been made that students are placed into their intervention class based on data. Students are then placed into small groups within the class based on analysis of data to identify common needs (e.g., Group A, Group B, Group C, and/or Group D).

The following schedules show how educators can integrate two types of instruction into a typical week:

• differentiated small group instruction

• 45 minutes of personalized Online Instruction

These schedules reflect the use of an intervention block for 30 or 45 minutes,* with a series of examples showing a progression from weekly to daily small group instruction. In all examples, students are able to achieve 45 minutes of i-Ready Online Instruction each week.**

By starting small, all educators are able to begin the process of integrating small group instruction, and over time may be able to integrate more small group instruction as they become more comfortable with the planning and coordination of small groups.

The teacher maximizes the 45-minute block of time for small groups and technology by incorporating time each day to work with at least one small group of students. In this schedule, each of the three groups meets with the teacher for an extended small group instruction time once a week (either on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday). In this 45-minute block schedule, the teacher works with three small groups of students. The teacher incorporates rotations daily to ensure that students meet their Time on Task goals and have time for small group instruction. To help student engagement and motivation, rotations are approximately 15 minutes and focused. Collaborative work and independent work are both used for skill practice. The teacher also incorporates data chats as a rotation on Friday to increase student motivation and to discuss students’ goals about their percent of lessons passed.

(Optional) Students who finish Independent or Small Group Work and have been absent.

The teacher maximizes the time for small groups and technology by incorporating time daily to work with one small group of students during Week A. In this schedule, small group rotations happen across an entire week ensuring by week’s end every group has been to each station, allowing the teacher to work with each group for a longer amount of time. During Week B, the teacher has more time for whole class lessons and uses independent work time to have a Teacher station where she/he can work with students on an as-needed basis.
