Building Construction Onsite Mechanisation options and possibilities -Dr. Ajit Sabnis

Introduction

As Builders of a nation, Architects and Engineers,

have encountered innumerable challenges and have

always succeeded in providing practical solutions- In the

absence of which, remarkable edices like temples,

cathedrals with mind boggling features, intricate

facades, could not have been built. Stone blocks could

not have found their respective slots in Pyramids.

Needless to say, the present era has forged a new

relation between Man and Machine. It is possible to trace

the evolution of progressive mechanisation in some pre

industrial buildings, which have evolved and improved

slowly with time and innovations.

Indian Construction Industry is now facing acute

shortage of manpower. Where have they disappeared?

How can we achieve more in less time? – These

questions bother every builder today. According to some

studies, "One of the most prevalent hurdles for the real

estate sector is the 'human resource' challenge. The

sector lacks quality talent stemming from the absence

of specialised real estate education, resulting in the

absence of much needed fresh skilled manpower

entering the sector."

In construction, some tasks are labour intensive,

some predominantly employ equipment, and some use

a combination of both. It is observed that mechanization

in construction would probably reduce the cost of

construction by about 20-30%, without considering the

initial investment made towards procurement of the

equipment. In Indian context, following typologies give

us an indication of status of mechanisation.

– Infrastructure Projects - Mechanised to a larger

extent and in many cases, automated

– Earthwork related activities- Mechanised to a larger

extent

– Repairs, Rehabil itation, Retrotting- Fairly

Mechanised

– Testing Methodologies- Mechanised.

– Formwork- Partly Mechanised but still labour

intensive.

– Building Construction- Less Mechanised and still

labour intensive.

– Need of the Hour- Training, Emerging Technologies,

Standardisation, and Mechanisation possibilities

Why do we need Mechanisation?

Whether a construction contract is unit price, lump

sum, or cost-Plus; whether the construction project is to

be linear (Concept-Design-Procurement-Construction)

or fast track (Design-Build), the cost of construction is a

major factor in all projects. Major factors that impact

construction costs are materials, labour, equipment,

overhead, and prot. The cost of equipment for civil

engineering projects can range from 25 to 40% of the

total project cost.

It is important for design engineers and

constructors to have sufficient knowledge about

construction equipment. Construction equipment is an

integral part of the construction process and cost of

construction is a function of operation. The equipment

spread selected for a specic construction operation is

critical to the success of a project. Characteristics like

Repetitiveness, Health hazards, Lack of skill, Accuracy,

Location, Accessibility etc also to be taken into account

while making a selection.

climatic and operating condition.

– Uniformity type(easier operation and maintenance ,

easy exchange of spare parts and operating

personnel)

– Size of equipment

– Use of standard equipments(made by several

companies so that easy purchase and delivery)

– Country of origin.(If importing foreign exchange

facility should be easily available)

– Unit cost of production – cost of running

– Availability of spare parts and selection of

manufacturer

– Availability of local labour for operations

Equipment Classification

Table 1, at the end of this article, gives an overview

of onsite construction mechanisation. Activities related

to Earthwork, Ground water control, water proong,

major concrete equipment such as large batching plants,

concrete pumps, are left out in this article as these are

mostly mechanised and streamlined. Construction

equipment can be broadly classied into various heads

depending on their function as; Earth Moving

Equipment, Road Construction Equipment, Hauling

Equipment, Piling Equipment, Floating Equipment for

Marine structures, Concrete Equipment, Quarry

equipment, Slipform Equipment, Material Handling

Equipment, Fabrication equipment etc. Some of the

commonly adoptable equipment are discussed under.

A majority building construction projects experience

cost over-runs. Proper planning, involving construction

method selection, sequencing operations and

coordinating specialty trades, as well as selection and

management of proper construction equipment for

specic construction tasks and monitoring its

production, can yield cost savings. Some of the

advantages of mechanisation in construction can be -

Higher Speed of Construction, Timely Project

Completion, Quality Maintenance, Cost Effectiveness,

Higher Productivity, Reduced Manpower and Worker

Safety.

Equipment Productivity

Equipment selection has to be integrated with

project planning and proper sequence of operations to

be performed by equipment to be carefully strategized.

For onsite mechanisation, we need to identify all such

activities involved in a construction process and

analysed considering labour-equipment criteria. Once

the equipment for an activity is identied, the next step is

to conduct an equipment productivity analysis to select

the suitable model. The objective is to choose the right

equipment to achieve more in less time.

Factors affecting the selection of construction equipment

– Availability of equipment

– Suitability of job condition with special reference to
