“Incorporating Our Mistakes”

Jake Owensby tells about his friend Andy

Dietsche. It seems that before becoming a priest,

and eventually the Bishop of New York, Andy

drew cartoons for a living. He literally drew

cartoons by hand using pen and ink.

Describing the creative process, Andy said that

at the very moment you touch pen to paper, you’re

committed. You’ve made a mark that you cannot

erase. One can only imagine that a trash can was

filled with crumpled-up false starts sitting next to

his drawing desk.

But what he said next may correct any

misperception of the cartoonist’s art. It may adjust

your view of where and how grace weaves our past

into our ongoing lives. Andy explained that the art

of drawing cartoons is learning to incorporate your

mistakes into the picture as you’re drawing it.

Arriving at a completed image is not about

erasing your mistakes. It’s about continuing to

draw in such a way that you make something

meaningful from those mistakes.

When we cooperate with grace, living

resembles the process of drawing. Paradoxically,

the beauty, goodness, wholeness, and holiness of

our lives incorporate and even emerge from the

mistakes we have made and the disfiguring marks

left on our lives by the mistakes that others have

made.

Think about that for a moment. Often we

humans try to avoid mistakes, missteps, and

miscues. Some of us, when we are scrutinized or

evaluated attempt to place fault or blame on

someone else for a mistake. We know we’ve made

a mistake but we are prone to avoid admitting the

mistake or we crumple up the paper only to start

all over again and crumple up more paper.

Others of us simply do not even attempt to do

anything for fear of making a mistake. We get

stymied and sit, stew, wrinkle up the paper without

even putting pen to paper.

What new projects, new starts, new

relationships might be awaiting you if you choose

to incorporate the mistakes, missteps, miscues in to

the picture.

God has taken you in to the picture. With all of

our flaws, fragileness’s, and frailties; God

incorporates ALL of this in to a fabulous creation

of life. You are loved and accepted just as you are.

Join others from your church family at your church as we all explore what God is doing.

All the best, Jerre

“Incorporando nuestros errores”

Jake Owensby habla de su amigo Andy

Dietsche.

vida. Literalmente dibujó dibujos animados a mano

usando pluma y tinta.

comprometido. Has hecho una marca que no puedes

borrar.

imagen.

Dios te ha llevado a la imagen. Con todos nuestros

defectos, fragilidad y fragilidad; Dios incorpora

Youth Ministries Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel. Isaiah 7: 14 It’s the end of the year and everyone knows what time it is. It is Christmas time and a time to receive plenty of presents with good food, good times and great people. It is to be a magical time and full of Christmas cheer! Sometimes we forget the ultimate reason why we are here. It is the greatest gift of all and that’s Jesus. Without the ultimate purpose sometimes the season can get dry and dull. That’s why during the advent season we need to remember Jesus and all the gifts his birth provides to us. Our Sunday school Bible study is about reevaluating the meaning of Christmas this year. We are looking at what gifts this advent season will bring to our spirituality and outlook on life. The study shows us that we can receive the gift of good news, a gift of a savior in a time of struggling. Week two shares with us the gift of a new understanding of how God is present in our lives. The third week we talk about how there is a gift of a strong foundation, whether rebuilding the basics of our faith or learning new things we always draw back to a foundation. The last week expresses how we can receive a new style of living. This lifestyle proposes that we love more freely, live more openly and give more of ourselves. A challenge I propose to you this time is to challenge your faith, push it deeper and remember what you believe and why. Sometimes it may only lead to more questions than answers and that is okay because God knows all and he will pave your path.

Have a Happy New Year, Jeremy Amerin

Muchas gracias, Jeremy Amerin

God heals the brokenhearted and

bandages their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

The business of Christmas has

passed. Perhaps you found some moments

of love, joy, peace, and hope during the

advent season that led up to the celebration

of Christ’s birth. Sometimes they are found

with family, friends and your church family.

Hope is looking past the current things in

our lives and seeing what God can do. It is

putting our energy in the power of God that

could send his only Son to save us.

Joy is when something much bigger than

happiness consumes you and you can’t wait

to share good news. Maybe when a child

tells part of the story, their story, about a

baby named Jesus born in “Befleham”.

Love is unconditional love in the blessings

that occur with no other human explanation

but the love of Christ. Maybe it is taking in a

glance or hug from someone you hold dear

or an act of kindness that comes “at just the

right time”.

Peace is those moments when in the

business of life, a calmness and a breath

that comes from a God. Maybe noticing the

beautiful sunrise or sunset.

As we take down the Christmas tree and it

is all “over”, I will never forget when it

happened. One of my favorite Christmas

ornaments broke into pieces. It could never

be put back together as it was before. But it

was kept, mended and still hangs on the

tree. Our children will continue to hear

stories of Jesus and family. We will learn

how God has healed and continues to heal

the brokenness in families. May we

remember to hope, to find joy, to seek

peace, and to see the love of Christ in our

brokenness and in midst of healing.

Blessings, Melyssa D. White

a salvarnos.

A New Year Before Us

“Teach us to number

our days, that we may

gain a heart of wisdom”

Time is a strange thing isn't it? Strange

and wonderful! As I look at my calendars

from 2018 and 2019, lying side by side, I am

reminded again of the gift of time God gives

us every single day! My well worn calendar

from 2018 is full of activities, celebrations,

obligations and opportunities- what a

collage of both important cherished

moments and the trivial! And now before

me, the pristine new calendar, blank before

me, waiting for what will fill my days in this

new year. What will I choose? How will I

number my days? We know that You, Lord

God, have written our names in Your book

of life. That you number our days, the

length of our lives. From Your Son’s

teaching, we learn that You have a purpose

for each of us and want us to number our

days in choices that serve You and others.

Let us take the gift of time, treating it as the

true gift it is and use it wisely and mindfully.

Not taking for granted the time or

opportunities we are given, but giving

thanks. Help us, we pray, day by day to

make our choices in ways that honor You,

God and help Your kingdom come here on

earth.

“Unshakable Hope-Building Our Lives

on the Promises of God”

By Max Lucado

This DVD study will start Monday January 7

12-1pm church Library or

January 8th Tuesday at MOP Assisted

Living Dining room 3:15-4:15pm

This study will help us see our lives and

problems in light of God’s promises. The

stories of men and women in the Bible were

different, but the theme was the same: they

were people of the Promise. Like them, we

can also build our love on God’s promises,

and trust Him to keep them.

Join us at one of these studies, as we learn

more about God’s promises.

The Same Sky By Amanda Eyre Ward

Immigration is in the news daily. Right now there is a caravan of desperate people from Central America who have traveled to the border town of Tijuana, Mexico. The child in Amanda Ward’s story could be one of those immigrants. As eleven-year-old Carla tells her story, we feel her desperation as conditions deteriorate around her in Honduras. She and her little brother live alone in their grandmother’s house. Instead of going to school, they pick up trash at the dump to get money for food. On good days there are even some vegetable or meat scraps. Finally, gangs of robbers steal everything. No one is safe. In contrast, Alice lives in Austin, Texas, where she and her husband own a popular barbeque restaurant. They have a good life, but Alice longs for a child which she cannot have. They had even adopted a baby and brought him home, only to have the birth mother change her mind. After months of struggle, Carla and Alice cross paths in Austin. It’s only a glance, not an introduction, but it will change both of their lives forever. Pat Kolb Nurturing for Community (2019)

OUR MINISTRY and MISSON GIVING

Great churches. Great leaders. Great disciples. Transforming the world.

Each church within the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church is asked each year to support

the ministry of the United Methodist Church through our Ministry and Mission fund. For 2019, that

“apportionment” for First United Methodist Church of Dodge City is $64,970.

At a recent Church Council meeting, it was reported that, once again, First United

Methodist of Dodge City has paid our Ministry and Mission Funds in full for the current

year. We are a generous congregation. Through your support, we join with all United

Methodists across the Great Plains Conference to work as God’s hands to those in need.

Thank You for your generous support!
