Welcome to the first of Verbal’s genre-themed, i love reading… festivals in 2013. this first festival celebrates narrative and stories for children and young people in all their forms, but with emphasis on the original and best medium – books!

When the city won the accolade of uK City of Culture, we thought long and hard about what this designation should mean to us – as the Verbal team – and also as proud natives of the city. the Disobey gravity programme is the fruit of that discussion. Disobey gravity has, at its heart, one simple aim: the promotion of reading for pleasure in all age groups and all walks of life.

the full programme for Disobey gravity launches very soon and we’ve gone to great lengths to make sure there’s something in it for everyone. there’ll be more festivals – look out for lee Child headlining our i love reading… crime Festival in november - plus the biggest and best 2D Festival yet. the programme takes reading aloud out into the community with our ambitious reading rooms project, starting this month. as well as training local people to spread their love of reading in their own communities through the reading rooms, we have opportunities for emerging writers and illustrators to hone their craft and get published. Watch this space.

We’re incredibly excited about the amazing stuff we have in store for you in 2013. put quite simply – we love reading – and we want to share the love…

thanks to our Sponsors

We couldn’t have made any of this happen without the generous support and help of the following organisations: Culture Company, the arts Council of northern ireland, Derry City Council and the Department of Culture, arts and leisure.

We’d also like to extend a warm thank you to our partners: mind Candy, penguin, smyths toys, fighting Words and Young at art.

from everyone at the Verbal arts Centre, enjoy the festival and make sure to keep an eye out for upcoming Verbal events.

p.s. this is the first time we are using our new logo & name, we hope you like it!

best wishes,

Derek landy lives in Dublin. he holds a black belt in Kenpo, trains in Krav maga, and is a

qualified bodyguard, making him possibly the only children’s author who can officially protect himself when on tour. as signing queues of eager fans grow with every new book, and he reaches rock-star levels of popularity, he may soon need to put these skills to use at a Cathedral near you…
