I Like Myself Now
Once you see a child’s self-image begin to improve, you will see significant gains in
achievement areas, but even more important, you will see a child who is beginning to enjoy life more -
Wayne Dyer
I had a great feeling of relief when I began to understand that a youngster needs more than just subject matter. I know mathematics well, and I teach it well. I used to think that was all I needed to do. Now I teach children, not maths. I accept the fact that I can only succeed partially with some of them. When I don’t have to know all the answers, I seem to have more answers than when I tried to be the expert. The youngster who really made me understand this was Eddie. I asked him one day why he thought he was doing so much better than last year. He gave meaning to my whole new orientation. “It’s because I like myself now when I’m with you”, he said. - A teacher quoted by Everett Shostrom in Man, The Manipulator
In addition to the church collections above, we also receive on average £420 per month from direct debits. Enormous thanks.

Mission Appeal - this weekend Fr Francis from the Missionary Society of St Paul is joining us to make the annual appeal on behalf of the missionary societies to assist them in spreading the Gospel and encouraging mission activity across the world. Give him a warm welcome. Its not always easy to arrange events so that they don’t conflict with other things. Since this is the first Sunday of the month, we’d normally be having our second collection (for September that will be for Catholic Education). Could we move our second collection to next weekend so that we give generous support to Fr Francis? Apologies for this but it should work out OK if you remember. Thanks, as always.
The Missionary society of St Paul has ordained about 300 priests and has over 100 students in training for the priesthood. Their work in some 18 countries - mainly in Africa but also in Europe, USA and Canada and here and Ireland. Your donation and prayers will help this extensive work. Thanks again.
Care for our buildings - we now have our 5 yearly reports on our buildings, carried out by the diocese. If you have any skills which may help us in the constant work required for repairs and maintenance, would you please let us know. Thank you.
St. Mary’s Piety - Why not pop into our little shop at the back of church and take a look at the items for sale. New stock now in. Red Mission Boxes - St Mary’s and St Wilfrid’s - Please leave at the back of church for September collection. Social Event - Meal at Pollards on Thursday 3 October, please add you name to the list at the back of church if you would like to join us. Pilgrimage to Walsingham - 9 September 2019, the coach will collect pilgrims from St Mary’s Bishop Auckland at 9.20 am and then pick up at St Mary’s Newton Aycliffe at 9.45 approx.

Scripture Readings for this week’s Masses:
Our Local Foodbank - Enormous thanks to all who have helped and continue to help. Extra critical demand is being experienced during these school summer holidays. The usual broad range of staple non-perishable food items remains a constant and necessary expression of our Gospel requirement to feed the hungry. Let’s see what we can do. The gratitude of many, many people is heartfelt. This week we need tinned veg, tinned spaghetti, coffee, pkt. soup, tinned potatoes, corned beef/ham. Passion Play, Good Friday 2020 - If you can help at all in any supportive, practical way, we’d encourage you please to attend one of the Open Call meetings to help in building up the team of people who will make this happen successfully. These are the meetings: Saturday 7 September at 10.30am at St Mary’s RC Church, DL14 6PQ Wednesday 11 September at 6.30pm at Bishop Auckland Methodist Church, DL14 6AH Saturday 14 September at 10.30am Bishop Auckland Methodist Church DL14 6AH.
Annual Retreat Day - for Eucharistic Ministers, readers and members of the SVP Society and anyone wishing to come, will be held at All Saints Church, Ferryhill on Saturday 28 September 2019 from 10.30am to 2pm. Lecture, Mass and lunch. Please add your name to the list at the back of church. Contact St Joseph’s, Coundon on 01388 602030 for more information.
The next ten years are very important for our diocese. The decline in Mass attendances across all parishes and fewer priests means that careful thinking and planning is required so that our needs are met.
More important is the need for committed people to come together in prayer to see how we all can grow in our faith and in practical ways express what God is asking of us. Over the next month I’ll be looking for around fifty people prepared to join in collective thinking, praying and learning as we handle the present and prepare for the future. Please let me know if you are interested. I need another fifty to pray for the first fifty. Check out the bright green or orange lists available at the back of church. Big thanks.
