Samantha Kochhar, CEO/MD, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies presents the freshest rends in make-up. Here is the guide:

Spring/Summer ‘13 beauty book Get the style

Bright lips: Red lips is one the hottest trends for spring 2013. One can experiment with velvety scarlet, bold coral or vibrant fuchsia. It’s advised to wear bright lips in the matte form.

Stark eyes: Dab your make-up brushes in shades of turquoise and vibrant aqua. The look is not supposed to be too wild or extreme for every day. Try a thin streak of a green eyeliner or a smear of sapphire or a colour blocking royal blue or teal. To add glamour for the evening, add a few sparkles around the eyes!

The eyeliner effect: Ever since the cat eye trend, the eyeliner has become an essential. The new trend is applying a tight outline and then to smudge it softly; it can also be retro fl icked for day wear. For the evening, swipe a platinum shadow over the lids, to create a contrast.

Shimmer and shine: Apply silver teal over the lids and up to the brows. Pair it with nude lips.

Bare skin: Fresh, natural skin provides the perfect backdrop for the season’s best looks. Good skin care goes a long way. Put a light primer under-neath make-up and put a highlighter on the high points of your face. Rim your eyes with a glossy lip treatment. Just apply it around the perimeter and fi nish with defi ned brows and mascara. Give a pink blush on the cheeks.

Lush lashes: Go from twiggy lashes to curled and combed lashes with the waterline fi lled in white.

Trend alert!

O ne of the most creative and artistic

hairdressers, Tina Farey excels in cutting, colour-ing, dressing hair and avant-garde work. A three-times winner of Southern Hairdresser of the Year, a member of the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame, 2010 AIPP Award for the best Avant Garde Photographic Collection, and London Hairdresser of the Year 2012, her work is innovative and inspirational. Editorial Director at the Rush Hair salon in London, Farey’s energy is infectious as her passion for hairdress-ing shines through.

The biggest break of your careerAfter being at RUSH for six years, I was chosen to repre-sent the British Fame team, that was a great platform for me to gain recognition in the industry and also when I won the South-ern Hairdresser of the Year.

Secret for successI just love what I do and am passionate about hair. I have a strong belief in my style, and so far, it has not let me down.

Evolution of the industryI have been in the business for 25 years. When I started in the 80s, it was experimental and a lot of things were based on trial and error! Hairdressing is a fast growing industry and

techniques in cutting, colour-ing and styling are now so advanced these days. Expert advice too is easily available.

Role and responsibilitiesTo oversee photographic and editorial work for the RUSH brand. My experience in show work also requires my creative input with regard to concepts and the production of all hair innovations.

Opportunities and moreHairdressing has given me the opportunities to travel and teach the RUSH philosophy all over the world. It has also given me the chance to work creatively with some of the best hairdressers, photographers

and be part of one of the most inspiring industries I know.

Trendy hairstyles right nowPopular trends are long grungy hair, an eclectic mix of 50s, 60s and 70s like micro fringes, red hair and graphic bobs.

Styles in London and IndiaThe women in London are not afraid to cut their hair.

Favourite hairstylistI don’t have a favourite hairdresser, but Angelo Seminara and Guido Palau are people I see inspiring the industry with their vision.

Actively involved in the craft for the last two years, Ishika has received acolades for her work from around the world

A mbika Pillai, a celebrated hair and make-up artist,

has always been humble about her achievements and appre-ciations. She owns a chain of seven salons in Delhi and aims to expand further. A favourite of the fash frat, she is an inherent part of fashion shows and beauty events.Pillai has won awards such as the IAAFA Award for the best make-up artist in 1996 and the Kingfi sher Fashion Award for the best hair designer in 2000, to name a few. Salon India pens down her success path and meteoric rise to fame.

The beginningIn 1987, Pillai came to Delhi to pursue a course in beauty and hair, but with a vision of starting a salon in Kollam. But destiny had other plans for her. Be-ing addicted to the city and its people, she decided to take a job offer in Delhi itself. After a brief stint at various salons as a hairdresser, she decided to open one in partner-ship with Sylvie. After seven years, she moved on to launch Visions by Ambika, a salon with yet another partner.

After fi ve years, she decided to change the name of the salon to ambikapillai, which soon become a household name. However, after 14 years the partnership came to an end. Says she, “I lost two of my three salons, but I was determined to make it work. We opened in a new location and started from scratch. It has been six years since then and with seven salons in Delhi, we have every intention of growing to our fullest strength.” Driven more by need

than inspiration, Pillai reveals, “I have to admit I’m not one of those who got into this indus-try because someone inspired me, it was a necessity. I come from an orthodox family. It was unheard of for a girl to work or get divorced. Married at 17, di-vorced at 24, without a degree behind me, I chose to leave home with my two-year old daughter anåd come to Delhi to train myself in the world of beauty and hair. There has been no looking back since.”

Challenges then and nowBeing dedicated and honest to her work, Pillai feels her mother-tongue, Malayali, held her back the most. “Being a South Indian from Kerala, I struggled with Hindi right through school and language had never been my

Resort and beach beautyCandy lips, smokey eyes with a combination of satin fi nish and braids in different variations were the happening trend at the India Resort Fashion Week in Goa. Focus was on creating resort, relaxed yet glamorous looks, so the offi cial hair and make-up artist, Marvie Beck, experimented with a variety of colours. Says she, “It was a resort theme, so we gave a little sunburn effect to the skin, using a tad of russet and tan colours. The idea was to make models look like that they have spent a lot of time in the sun. We also used rasp-berry pink on the cheeks. For eyes, smokey was a prominent trend for designers like Rocky S, Narendra Kumar, Falguni & Shane Peacock, Ridhi Siddhi and Pria Kataria Puri. Aqua blue was also used by designers Rachna Sansad and Sounia Gohil.”

You have been a part of the fashion industry for two decades. How have things changed?I may have been here for a long time and done a lot of shows, but I feel every show is like my fi rst one. One has the same nervousness, enthusiasm and excitement to work on the look or create the clothes, put make up, the hair, the music together.

What is the relevance of make-up and hairstyle in fashion? They are absolutely relevant. Make-up and hair, shoes and accessories are as important as the clothes because each factor counts. They are critical to any fashion show or even to the look of a garment. The same girls look different without make-
