Extension Educator 4-H Youth Development, Vinton County

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Extension Educator position is a 100% teaching appointment that provides leadership to plan, develop and implement a dynamic Extension Educational program, covering a broad range of subject matter categories. Vinton County is a rural county in southeastern Ohio and is part of the Appalachian region. The population is approximately 13,228 people with 97.9% being White/ Caucasians. The median household income is $29,465 and 20% of residents are below the poverty level. One county-wide school district provides education for county youth.

I have dedicated the majority of my time to developing educational programs and curriculum in the following areas: 1) Leadership Development 2) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Education and 3) Small Animal Sciences. Leadership Development and STEM Education combine to form a majority of the programming efforts for the position and contribute to the ability of Vinton County youth to be successful in the future workforce through the skills and abilities they gain from their experience in the 4-H youth program. Careers for youth entering the workforce increasingly center on STEM skills and the ability to work successfully as part of a team. Rural youth are shown to have less exposure to STEM experiences as part of their education as their urban and suburban counterparts.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (40%)

Teen leaders are a vital element of an impactful 4-H youth development program. Using developed lesson plans and project books, teens are given opportunities to prepare for the roles they will play as camp counselors, junior leaders, junior fair board and future leaders. I design, plan, promote, organize, teach, and evaluate youth education programs that focus on teen leadership, youth financial literacy, agricultural awareness and career exploration.

STEM EDUCATION (30%)

STEM skills are in high demand for youth and adults entering the job market. Youth discover and develop interests and skills related to STEM through afterschool clubs, special interest programs, and short activities added to existing events in the county. I have placed emphasis on expanding the reach of research-based science through my collaborations with science teachers and afterschool personnel in the county.

SMALL ANIMAL SCIENCES (30%)

I research, develop, teach, and implement programs related to small animals and rabbits on the county, state and national level. These programs promote the successful development of knowledge, skills, and abilities in youth interested in these projects. I work with state and county 4-H and Animal Sciences staff to increase the number and variety of materials used for teaching about small animals. In Vinton County, approximately 70% of 4-H youth enrolled in community clubs take a small animal project, as they are affordable and are relatively inexpensive to house. The lower costs associated with these projects are important to families with low-to-moderate incomes.

The current program that I facilitate involves 565 youth in 29 community clubs, 1410 additional youth in 4-H school enrichment and afterschool programs, and the service of 84 adult volunteers.

This position is partially funded through the local county contribution which is obtained from a 5-year property tax levy. Every 5 years, I work closely with a Levy Committee of local residents that advocate for the additional passage of a levy that provides the necessary funding for maintaining the Extension Educator position.

5) Curriculum Development

Ohio 4-H Camping Program Volume 2: was distributed on a flash drive to 112 4-H professionals and camp facility managers at the 2017 4-H Camp Director In-Service. It has been accepted for publication to be accessed through ohio4h.org. Year Developed: 2017 (published after September 2017 request to switch to faculty track) Overview: Camp is the highest risk activity Ohio 4-H offers. In order to ensure counselors and staff are equipped with the necessary information to be prepared and have a successful camp, 4-H professionals must have the background knowledge of how to plan for, train counselors and staff, and properly evaluate the programs.

Overall Objectives: The objectives for this curriculum include:

• Provide material for planning, implementing, and evaluating camp to 4-H professionals who serve as camp directors. • Provide resources for 4-H professionals who serve as camp directors to use when training camp counselors.

Target Audience: The target audience for this curriculum is 4-H professionals throughout Ohio, and the nation. Curriculum Description: This curriculum provides information for what camp directors should consider when planning for camp. This is Volume 2.0, which adds to the initial curriculum distributed in 2016. Items included in this particular curriculum are:

• Overview of Ohio 4-H Camping • Counselor/Staff Selection • Counselor Training Lessons (46 total lessons) • Camp Programming • Camp Evaluations (counselor)

Role: The candidate was 100% responsible for creating 7 lessons: "How to Use Your Noodle", Building a Team", "Oh No, Now What", "Counselor Backpacks", "Counselor Responsibilities", "Creating Activities that Require Minimum Props", and "Effective Time Fillers". Overall contribution to curriculum is 7%. Team members are Mary Beth Albright, Cassie Anderson, Carolyn Belczyk, Kirk Bloir, Steve Brady, Kathy Bruynis, Leslie Cooksey, Erin Dailey, Hannah Epley, Katherine Feldhues, Doug Foxx, Rachael Fraley, Connie Goble, Becca Goodman, Larry Hall, Stephen Heppe, Ashley Hughey, Christy Leeds, Jamie McConnell, Jayne Roth, Hallie Rutt, Gwen Soule, Jill Stechshulte, Jenny Strickler, Michelle Stumbo, Tim Tanner, Travis West, and Tracy Winters.

Use by Others: This curriculum was shared with 112 individuals at the Camp Program Director In-Service to 4-H and camping professionals throughout Ohio in November, 2017. Impact: After presenting the curriculum to individuals at state and national presentations, session participants have made comments about how easy it is to navigate, and the benefit of the menu of options. An online evaluation also solicited feedback from individuals.

It was noted in comments regarding the curriculum are:

• The lesson plans are the most useful. Most are pretty easy to put together without using a large amount of time to do so.

• The curriculum is organized; it is helpful they are organized by competency. This helps me plan out the year’s lessons and know I’ve hit multiple areas.

Page 11: I. Introduction PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N …...I. Introduction Travis West The Ohio State University PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N McArthur, Ohio, 45651 Phone: 7405965212 Biographical

• The layout of the lesson is useful; knowing the competency breakdown, how much time an activity will take, and what supplies would be needed in an easy to find location.

• Easy to use activities to do at meetings, but also can be adapted to change from year to year. • The curriculum helps me keep my training interesting- I may be covering the same topic but it is a different way.

Additionally, quantitative results include:

• 100% of individuals who utilized the curriculum would recommend it to others to use. • 97% indicate they plan to use the curriculum in the future.

Rabbit Welfare, Ethics and Quality Assurance Program has been distributed in sections over the last 2 years during the Assuring Quality Care for Animals In-Service. The third and final section will be piloted at the 2019 event this fall. Year Developed: 2020 (pending branding and trademarking approval of format) Overview:

Market rabbits have continued to grow in popularity among 4-H members across Ohio. In 2018, 6,432 4-H members enrolled in the market rabbit project representing over 12,000 market rabbits being exhibited and sold at county fairs across the state. An estimated 60% (7,368) of those are ending up in the human food chain so educating members about appropriate good production practices and animal welfare is a must. Rabbits are not considered livestock by the United States Department of Agriculture but that does not relieve us from acting as responsible producers and make sure that our junior fair youth are delivered a quality and safe product for consumers.

Overall Objectives:

The objectives for this curriculum include:

• Provide materials for extension professionals and volunteer leaders to teach rabbit exhibitors the 10 Good Production Practices (GPPs) that we teach in Quality Assurance training with a specific focus on rabbits

• Educate junior fair rabbit exhibitors about GPPs using hands-on activities they can apply in real life situations with their project animals.

Target Audience: The target audience for this curriculum is 4-H professionals and agricultural society members throughout Ohio, and the nation. Curriculum Description: This curriculum provides presentations and activities that address the 10 Good Production Practices for livestock with a focus on their application to rabbits. Presentations and activities are Items included in this particular curriculum are:

• Overview of Animal Welfare and Ethics • Powerpoints for each of 3 successive years (3 GPPs included in each Powerpoint) • Multiple activities that apply to the 10 GPPs • Evaluation instrument to be used to assess knowledge gained from each 1-hour session

Role: The candidate was 45% responsible for creating the Powerpoints (with speaker notes for explanation) and related hands-on activities for each of the 10 Good Production Practice as outlined in the National Quality Assurance materials.

Team members are Travis West, Bridget Moore and Lucinda Miller

Use by Others: Portions of the curriculum were shared with 342 individuals during the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Assuring Quality Care for Animals In-Service. Impact: No impact data is available until the last portion of the curriculum is released this fall and published by OSU Extension. Current programming utilizing the curriculum this spring are being cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

6) Brief Description of your approach to and goals in teaching, major accomplishments, plans for the future in teaching

Approach & Goals to Teaching

I approach an audience with the mindset that they have something to contribute to the topic, and I am open to learning from the audience as I teach, providing opportunities for the audience to be involved. Involving participants allows them to share their experiences, which benefits the audience as a whole. Audience involvement increases retention of the information dramatically, furthering my teaching goal by being purposeful in engaging participants in the process. I am able to adjust my information and activities to meet the specific needs of the diverse audiences. I am always looking for a way to make my teaching interactive and learner-focused in order to provide the maximum retention for the participants.

My ability to present useful information in a succinct manner while still involving the audience and educating has resulted in 18 invitations to present at the state and national level. My contributions at the county and state level to team teaching are evidenced by my service to two Design teams, including the Volunteerism and Community Clubs Design team that I co-chaired, and the STEM Pathways Design Team where I serve as a contributing member. I believe that strong teamwork leads to creative design and innovative teaching.

Leadership Development

Major Accomplishments

I have delivered 79 programs to 3,366 teens at the county and state levels. One highlight is a county overnight teen leadership program open to any high school youth which incorporates activities in career exploration, conflict resolution, decision making, college access and community leadership. The retreat engaged 35 teens (both 4-H and non 4-H) in learning and practicing workforce skills. Attendees indicated an increased knowledge of .46 of workforce skills on a 5 point Likert scale after completing a pre/ post-test evaluation at the Teen Leadership Retreat. I have developed opportunities that appeal to teens, including establishing the thriving camping program that now includes training 28 teens to serve as teachers and camp counselors in a program that was traditionally served by adult camp counselor staff.

I value the chance to bring college access education to youth in rural Vinton County who may not have a person that encourages them to pursue post-secondary education. In March of 2020, I completed the 10th year of hosting OSU students in Vinton County for a week where they get one hour of small group interaction with over 1400 students in Vinton County Local Schools to talk about “life after your high school diploma”. Feedback from teachers each year highlights the value of exposing students to someone attending college who can answer the questions they have about getting to college once they graduate from high school.

I have received two grants recently that will allow the expansion of teen leadership development initiatives that will engage youth that I am not reaching with other teen programming. The 4-H Tech Changemakers allows youth to implement a work plan around increasing the digital literacy of adults and youth in Vinton County. The Youth Engaging in Action (YEA) grant has developed a group of high school teen leaders that are working on developing and implementing drug prevention education for their peers in the school district.

Plans for the Future

I plan to continue expanding the reach of the YEA and 4-H Tech Changemakers teen efforts to integrate with adult efforts like the county Drug Coalition and county Broadband Expansion work group. Recently, I completed part of the Teaching Support Program through the University Institute for Teaching and Learning (UITL). I plan to use the fall to examine my teaching

methods utilized with camp counselors and implement some changes to the structure of that training program for 2021 through a Course Redesign.

STEM Education

Major Accomplishments

Education of students around the topics of Science and Engineering have always been a priority in my teaching efforts. I am situated in position that allows me to disseminate research-based science information to clientele, mostly youth of Vinton County. I am entering the 6th year of maintaining a weekly 4-H club in each of the 3 elementary schools. These clubs meet weekly starting in January through mid-May and are held during the afterschool program. I have obtained over $7000 in grant funds in the past three years to maintain the afterschool clubs programming and they continue to grow in the number of students returning weekly for STEM education.

4-H Space Adventure Camp is a partnership with Marietta College that takes 5th - 7th grade students and immerses them in the aerospace and physics field for 3 days. Youth in 2019 came from 12 counties in Ohio and 2 in West Virginia to dive deeper into STEM concepts that guide flying vehicles and space exploration. A variety of lesson plans have been developed to be utilized at space camp and in 2018 we revamped the computer technology portion to update our imaging and simulation sessions for our tech savvy campers. Space Camp program is being expanded in 2020 to include a career awareness focus with a panel of professionals in the space and science field along with virtual connections to NASA engineers.

The National Youth Science Day activity around coding was a hit for 2 elementary schools in the county. I spent 3 days in the classroom teaching 3rd, 4th and 5th graders coding language and importance of detail in coding even the most basis numbers and letters. The science teachers were able to utilize their Google classroom accounts to give students access to the coding projects they started so that students could continue honing their skills throughout the year.

Small Animal Sciences

Major Accomplishments

I have taught 23 educational programs focused on rabbits. These programs have been attended by 1,980 people and were delivered in 9 counties across Ohio. I currently serve on the Assuring Quality Care for Animals Advisory Committee (AQCA) because of my diverse knowledge and background in the area of small animals, including rabbits. I have authored two fact sheets on timely animal science topics for small animals that were distributed statewide. I have accumulated over 200 individual instruction contacts, most which dealt with biosecurity needs for rabbit owners after a confirmed case of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) was confirmed in Medina County, Ohio in September 2018.

I have toured 2 rabbit processing plants with Animal Science faculty performing carcass audits and analyzing processes within the facility. Information and pictures are being used to understand the effects handling have on bruising and quality of the carcass being provided to the food chain.

Plans for the Future

The number of youth in Ohio that are enrolling and exhibiting rabbit projects continues to grow each year including a need to help educate Extension professionals, members and parents about rabbit selection, care, nutrition and production. I will continue to deliver rabbit education programs around the state to improve the success of the rabbit projects for members statewide. Expansion of the research with processing plants will continue to further develop handling and husbandry best practices for youth members exhibiting rabbit projects at county fairs throughout Ohio and potentially nationwide.

7) Evaluation of Teaching

The Evaluation of Effective Extension Teaching (EEET) Group and Peer Instruments have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and to seek ideas for improvements. Other evaluation tools used included: written evaluations, end-

Page 14: I. Introduction PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N …...I. Introduction Travis West The Ohio State University PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N McArthur, Ohio, 45651 Phone: 7405965212 Biographical

of-meeting comments, advisory committee input, participant comments, and personal observation. The EEET group instrument measures nine teaching abilities on a five-point Likert-type scale with five being the highest score and one being the lowest score. These instruments are used as after-program questionnaires and are administered by other colleagues or participants who are present at the program.

My mean scores on EEET evaluations show that I performed above my Extension peers 2 of the last 3 years. My performance utilizing a variety of teaching styles and techniques was evidenced by a mean score above the average in “held my attention” (4.70) and “gave clear explanations” (4.81) as indicated by participants during 2019 teaching engagements. Review letters from peers indicate “You asked the participants to introduce themselves, too. This helped to create a welcoming environment, build rapport with the participants, and establish yourself as a valid source of information on the topic.” One reviewer indicated that my teaching styles uses multiple instructional strategies which keep people engaged throughout the session.

I utilize peer evaluation letters to inform and modify teaching techniques and processes that address those areas of lower scores. I scored 4.69 out of 5 when participants rated me on “stimulating them in wanting to learn”. Recent means from EEETs indicate that improvement has been made in “showed respect for all persons attending” and “related program content to real-life situations” over the past three years. A peer review letter from 2018 indicated that I engaged participants and “used great examples which showed you had previous experience teaching the topic”. I challenge audiences with questions to encourage them to continue learning about the topic and applying it to their current situation. This is necessary to provide the best quality information and answers to questions in a concise manner that provides further clarification for the learner. I will continue to improve my evaluation skills by incorporating teaching evaluation instruments beyond EEETs to fine tune my teaching skills and abilities.

3) Brief Description of the Focus of the Candidate's Research, Scholarly or Creative Work, Major Accomplishments, and Plans for the Future, including Works in Progress

Leadership Development

Focus of Research, scholarly and creative works

Leadership Development among older youth happens several ways so that they get the same message multiple times. My current focus has been around the value of the Alternative Spring Break program that brings OSU students to Vinton County where they educate youth (grades 3-11) about post-secondary education options. Teaching plans are prepared for each grade level and are taught to the college students who are assisting with delivering the program in the schools. Youth in Vinton County Schools are getting multiple exposures to develop career awareness and important 21st century job skills through my programs including Alternative Spring Break, Day in the Life of a Buckeye, Career Awareness month presentations and LifeSkills.

Major Accomplishments

Utilizing my interest in helping teens be successful, I developed a program, Teen Leadership Retreat, which combined important leadership skill development with the need for giving back to the community (philanthropy). The program was successful in getting additional teen members involved in a program and many have since become involved in other older youth programs offered as part of the 4-H program. I have also worked to increase the number of teens active in the county 4-H program and have re-established teen camp counselors in the county’s camping program. I have increased the number of youth involved in serving as camp counselors from 12 to 28 during the last three years to develop the leadership skills and abilities of teens to move the county traditional 4-H program forward with success. I have contributed three lesson plans to the Making Extreme Counselors program and seven lesson plans to the Ohio 4-H Camping Program Volume 2 curriculum over the last two years.

Page 23: I. Introduction PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N …...I. Introduction Travis West The Ohio State University PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N McArthur, Ohio, 45651 Phone: 7405965212 Biographical

Ohio 4-H Officer videos were developed, recorded and are now available at Ohio4h.org/officer resources. Narratives were written, teens were recruited as “video stars” and videos were recorded to update the 4-H officer materials. These videos were posted in July 2019 to the OSU Extension Youtube channel and can be accessed from the Ohio 4-H Officer Resources page. The officer record books and resource guides were written as supplements to the videos in preparing 4-H members to further develop their leadership experiences by serving as club officer.

Future Plans

I currently serve as the Champion Chair for a group of 5 content specialists nationwide that are working to identify and develop resources for Extension professionals that focus on serving youth living in poverty. The Champion group is currently working on developing program model and fact sheets that provide the necessary resources for extension professionals to reach youth living in poverty with positive youth development programs. I currently have a journal article submitted to the Journal of Extension highlighting the value and structure of the Alternative Spring Break program that reaches rural, low-income youth with career awareness and postsecondary exposure.

STEM Education

Focus of Research, scholarly and creative works

Exposing youth in rural areas to STEM careers and skills is important as they are required in the future workforce for our country. Youth in Vinton County have several barriers that limit the chances they get to have authentic STEM experiences, including transportation, low speed internet and low-income households that support the opportunities that might happen outside school time. I focus on developing and delivering STEM programs to low-income youth through in-school and afterschool settings.

Major Accomplishments

I see the value in out of school time (OST) education for youth to have experiences that are not part of the in-school curriculum. Securing grant funding to purchase supplies and dedicating the time to conduct afterschool programming are essential to get youth exposed to STEM skills, concepts and careers. I have been successful in getting over $7000 in grant funding (over the last 3 years) to support STEM Education and received the State Award for Ohio in the category “Excellence in Afterschool Programming” for my efforts to incorporate aerospace topics, robotics engineering and science experimentation on a weekly basis for those students grades 3-5 that attend afterschool programs. The majority of the students participating in the afterschool program are female (66%) which is a group that should be targeted for seeing themselves in STEM careers in the future.

Future Plans

As part of the STEM Design Team, I will be writing and reviewing content for a STEM blog to highlight and share STEM curriculum and materials with families and extension professionals. I have developed a list of topics that I will be turning into Engineering Challenges over the come year for posting to the STEM Design Team webpage and blog site. As technology changes at a rapid rate, I continue to develop and revise activities to stay relevant with the youth audiences that are participating in my STEM programs.

Small Animal Sciences

Focus of Research, scholarly and creative works

The creation of small animal resources has been the focus of my time and effort since employment as an Extension Educator. I have used this experience and knowledge to develop resources on small animals for audiences on the county, state and national levels. I have created lesson plans that focus on quality assurance related to rabbits and several creative works that deal with a wide variety of topics that are important to 4-H youth exhibiting rabbit projects. These resource materials assist youth in understanding the importance and impact the care of their rabbit has on the end product for the consumer.

Major Accomplishments

Page 24: I. Introduction PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N …...I. Introduction Travis West The Ohio State University PO Box 473, 31935 St Rt 93N McArthur, Ohio, 45651 Phone: 7405965212 Biographical

I came to Extension with a knowledge and experience in small animals, specifically rabbits. I continued to expand my development of materials and resources to help educate county, state and national audiences on a wide variety of topics related to rabbits and other small animals. Rabbit projects are the 2nd largest livestock species 4-H project enrollment in Ohio, so the demand for timely, relevant materials around production, quality assurance and care of rabbits is increasing each year.

I assist in co-coordinating the breed identification, skillathon and judging contest within the Ohio State Fair Rabbit Department which includes more than 400 youth annually. I serve as co-superintendent for the Ohio 4-H Rabbit Quiz Bowl that was started in 2018 where teams prepare to showcase their knowledge of rabbits against teams from other counties. I continue to provide my small animal knowledge through publication of project resources and fact sheets to assist youth across Ohio in learning about their small animal projects. I was recently invited to write an article for the American Rabbit Breeders Association on a specific rabbit breed and recorded a video on training county fair rabbit judges for Nebraska 4-H expanding my reach beyond Ohio.

Future Plans

I am working with a faculty member from the Department of Animal Sciences on a rabbit handling project that will look at handling methods among Ohio youth, handling effects on carcass quality with resulting videos and publications that provide education for youth around proper handling of rabbits to maintain safety and carcass quality for the consumer. We have completed our harvest and fabrication audits at 2 processing plants collecting carcass bruising and processing data. The generated resources from this focused effort will not only expand the knowledge base of Ohio rabbit exhibitors, but will provide an avenue for developing skillathon stations for rabbit exhibitors.

4) Description of Quality Indicators of Your Research, Scholarly or Creative Work Such as Citations, Publication Outlet Quality Indicators Such as Acceptance Rates, Ranking or Impact Factors of Journal or Publisher

With 2814 Vinton County youth between the ages of 5 and 18, the community club program serves 16.4% of the potential population. When the youth that are served by the 4-H school enrichment and afterschool programs are added, I reach 55.8% of the county’s youth population with 4-H programming.

My experience teaching programs around rabbits and quality assurance provided requests for me to teach rabbit specific programs in 9 counties throughout Ohio. I was invited to serve as a judge and resource expert at the Nova Scotia Provincial Fair in September 2019 as a result of my work in the rabbit industry.

I expanded 4-H Space Adventure Camp from 44 to 60 campers this year for the first time in 25 years and the camp filled up completely within a month, without advertising. All of the campers from 2019 were on a waiting list from word-of-mouth advertising from previous campers.

I have presented at 2 national conferences with my work around reaching youth in poverty. My proposal to present a competency building session for the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents conference was accepted with an acceptance rate of 53.7% as well as the National Epsilon Sigma Phi meeting where the acceptance rate was 65.4%. These acceptances led to an invited presentation to the SNAP-Ed staff during their summer training in May where I trained staff that are working specifically with audiences at or below the poverty level in their communities across Ohio.

The abstract “College Access: Using your University Connections” presented at the Community Engagement Conference has 72 downloads from 5 countries since January 2018.

10) Brief elaboration that provides additional information about service activities listed above

I work with an Extension Advisory Committee that meets quarterly to continual assess programs and services being offered by the office because residents are voting on a levy every 5 years to continue the county funding portion of the total office budget. I meet monthly for a year leading up to election day with a formed Levy Committee that gives input on the information and impacts that should be provided to the residents of the county via print and social media. I maintain the stewardship duties of budgeting, financials, key support groups and commissioner relationships which complements the relationship with the Extension Advisory Committee. I am always looking for ways to be more effective in marketing the office's efforts for information and education and the success of funding relies on not just a few commissioners but over 10,000 voters. I value the ability to serve on committees and boards within the community and have used these connections to increase programming and funding for extension clientele. I have utilized community connections and my grant writing skills to increase the office budget to include more than just the $112,000 coming for the levy proceeds to $142,000; this has allowed the office to grow from 2 staff to 5 staff and one part-time consultant to cover 3 program areas and provide more access and education to county residents.
