VLA MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT
April 9, 1974
Narrative Report
1. Site and Wye - The Joint Venture completed Title I work and Title IIeffort is about 50% complete. The Title II work for the first contractwas delayed approximately six weeks due to revision of the antennastation locations. A Notice of Intent to Solicit Bids on this firstcontract has been issued and the target date for issuing the IFB isApril 22, 1974 with bids being due on May 22, 1974.
The well provided for under subcontract VLA-22 has been satisfactorilycompleted at a depth of 402 feet with the exception of test pumping, grouting and disinfection.
Sufficient ties, rail and fittings have been procured for the firstyear's construction.
2. Antenna Division - E-Systems, Inc., has accelerated their designeffort which has resulted in the completion of the concept, analysis andengineering phases of the design program. This has allowed additionalpersonnel to be assigned and utilized in the preparation of drawingsand specifications. Progress in specific areas is as follows:
a. Antenna- Structural and mechanical design is essentially complete.Specification documentation on the procurement of long lead itemshas been prepared and approved by AUI. Major assembly, drawings, layout drawings, servo analysis, logic diagrams and servo parametersare near completion or have been completed.
b. Antenna Assembly Building - E-Systems has prepared and revisedspecifications for the building and resubmitted the specificationsand drawings to AUI for approval.
c. Transporter - Hydraulic circuit design, design analysis and componentselection is in progress. Layout of equipment and initial con-figuration drawings are underway.
3. Electronics Division - Principal effort is being directed towardsprocurement of the prototype electronics system. Orders have beenplaced or are in the process of being placed for most of the highcost, long lead items. Progress in specific areas is as follows:
a. Feed Mounting Ring - Electrical specifications have been completedand mechanical design is underway. The feeds are being bid.
b. Front Ends - Orders have been placed for the parametric amplifiersand Up-Converters. Design layout is continuing on componentswhich are not mounted in the dewars.
VLA Monthly Progress ReportPage 2
c. Local Oscillator - Advanced testing of the breadboard system ofthe local oscillator and modems revealed the need for some minorsystem modifications which are underway.
d. Transmission System - Orders have been placed for the modem units.
e. Waveguide -An order has been placed for 1,250 meters of TE01circular waveguide. Tests have begun on an experimental designfor waveguide coupling that would utilize the full 60 mm diameterof the waveguide. It is expected that this effort will eliminatethe need for tapered sections.
f. Digital Delay and Multiplier System - Most major procurements arein process.
g. General Electronic System Design - New block diagrams have beencompleted which incorporate several minor modifications thatresulted from tests with the breadboard system and experiencewith the prototype electronics design.
h. Division Staffing - Two vacancies on the VLA Engineering Staffhave been filled. These are a digital engineer for the monitorand control system and a front end systems engineer.
4. Computer Division - The major effort in the VLA Computer Division hasbeen the finalization of the technical evaluation of the proposals forthe synchronous and asynchronous computers. This effort is nowcomplete and a contract award is projected prior to the end of April.
5. Project Management - Three vacancies in the Project Management Staff havebeen filled. They are Purchasing Officer, Contract Administrator, and an assistant who will provide liaison between the various sub-contractors and the NRAO technical areas.
