CENTERVILLE MESSENGER (096380) Free Upon Request-Published Weekly by Centerville Church of Christ, 138 N. Central Ave., Centerville, TN 37033-1427 April 5, 2017 Volume XXXVII –Number 14
“I Hope You Know”
How often were you instructed, or instructed others to, clean your plate? In this simple admonition, the lesson trying to be taught is that of not wasting what you have been given, or what you need. In some cases when the one being admonished to clean the plate, was also informed of the starving overseas who would cherish a plate of steamed asparagus! The underlying lesson is, “Don’t be wasteful with what you have been freely given.” In relationship to our lives, how much of ourselves do we waste on sin? Along with that question comes the accompanying thought of what aspects of our lives do we spend wasting on sin, and fail to realize the damage we are causing to our soul? I John 3:1, John instructs that whoever commits sin, commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. First of all we must recognize that as Christians we are under a law, and that law is Christ. We are under His law that says we have the freedom from the death that sin brings, and if we are living righteously in Christ, we will receive the gift of eternal life (Rom 6:16, 23). We are under a law of obedience which is not burdensome, but rather is Godly and profitable for eternal life (I John 5:3). When we sin, in any form whether it be to the magnitude of murder (Gal 5:21) or to the pain of evil speaking against one another (James 4:11), we have tainted the very precious gift that was given for our lives, Christ (I Peter 1:19). When we participate in certain activities, do we consider the implications and associations we are making? Do we consider how our fellowship is impacted, or to whom we are extending our fellowship? I would hope that all would agree that money is not an evil possession, but rather loving money is the corruption that comes with this possession (I Tim 6:10). If money is a needed possession, do we consider how we spend our money, and if we are spending it in a manner that is pleasing to God?
Do we spend more on entertainment and leisure than we do in our giving to God (II Cor 9:6)? (Notice to where the giving is directed in this passage, back to God, not the “physical church.” Yes the church receives the offerings to God, but they are just as responsible for being good stewards of money as is the individual.) When weighing the use of our time, is there a balance in our planning and use of our time, again something that is given to us by God? How much time per day do you set aside to study privately, and prayerfully? Christ made it His effort to rise early in the morning when no one was around so that He might have privacy and peace while He prayed to His Father (Mark 1:35). Do you encourage your children to study God’s word together as a family with the same zeal that you encourage them to “steal 2nd, or go for the goal?” I pray that we would each assess personally what changes we need to make or perhaps should make in our lives in order to be more productive for our Savior and His kingdom. I hope you know, Paul gave this admonition to the church in Ephesus that is still applicable in practice today, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is (Eph 5:15-17).”

50th Anniversary
RESTED UP FOR THE FINAL STRETCH… After Spring Break, it is now on to one of the busiest times of the year. As we begin to wrap up the monthly Firesides, Lighthouses, Prayer Breakfasts and Bible Studies we begin to prepare for VBS, Summer Camp at Meribah, the Turks & Caicos Mission Trip, the Cincinnati Blast and a whole lot more. Before we get to the Summer, we still have our Kite Flight, Cookout and Egg Hunt, L2L Convention, Golden Age Banquet and Senior Sunday! I hope you have gotten your second wind, because we are not letting up! I hope you plan to join us for it all! SENIOR PACKETS ARE IN THE MAIL… If you are in the Centerville Church of Christ Class of 2017 and do not receive yours by the end of the week, let me know. Please return the information sheet and a picture by April 23 in preparation for Senior Sunday, May 7. FOR THE TURKS AND CAICOS MISSION TRIP we have confirmed 23 will be making the trip in July. We are excited to visit and encourage our mission point in Turks and Caicos. While there we will help with Vacation Bible School and work with the church in whatever areas they need us. The church is growing and working hard with 15 baptisms in the last 10 months. Please continue to pray for this trip with us and that many lives will be brought to Christ through our efforts. WEDNESDAY NIGHTS are not to be missed for the Junior and Senior High… We continue our “Perception, It’s My Reality” Series. We are taking a long look at the things we individually struggle with that we feel is only ours to battle. Some great classes just for you that you will want to be a part of. Come join us! STUFFED EGGS ARE NEEDED… Not deviled eggs, but the ones for hunting. We need stuffed eggs or chocolates for the upcoming egg hunt for the Sparks & Intermediates on April 15. If you can help, just drop them off by my office or the church office anytime. Thank you! ON A PRIVATE NOTE… Thank you to so many that came to celebrate with us Sunday afternoon at Mom and Dad’s 50th Anniversary. There were so many people and so much kindness shown in honoring this special occasion. What a blessing it is to witness Mom and Dad’s marriage that have encouraged me and my brother in our marriages and family. We have always had the visual example of Godly parents to correct us, contend for us and comfort us as we live our Christian lives and raise our families. We have also had the silent example of devotion, dedication and determination to set their marriage apart from others. I cannot put into words how thankful I am for those examples and the one taught above all the rest, place it all in God’s hands and He will supply all that we need. Thankful and blessed and always trying to... follow His path, -Craig
