Meetings at 7AM on Thursdays atCoronado Yacht Club

Wasnt that a great meeting? On a clear and coldmorning Buck Rogers and Dick Madhousechecked us in. We welcomed back Jim Rodgersand Toni McCabe who rejoined the best serviceclub in the world. The coffee was good; the fruitbowls overflowed, and the pastries were cut intobite sized portions for us.President Jack started the meeting off on time andMarilyn Schaefer prayed for unity with all our guests. She gave us the wonderful prayer of Fath-er Mychal, the NY Fire Department chaplain whowas killed on 9/11:

Lord, take me where you want to go: Let me meet whoyou want me to meet: Tell me what you want me to say.And keep me out of your way.

We were glad to see Carl Boyd back for a visit, and Gil Gilliland had brought his wife RosemarieTan who is a neo-natal physician at Balboa Hospit-al.Joe Petrucci had double duty this morning. First hetold a joke about a scarf, and then he played hismouth organ to celebrate Buck Rogers birthdayback in Kennedy country. We had the sixth and seventh anniversaries of Ir-ish Flynn and Leslie Crawford in our club. They arekeepers, are they not?

Irish introduced our large contingent of mil-itary guests from the senior foreign officer class atthe Amphibious Base. Our Optimist introducer andhis partner were: morning sixty of us showed upfor our Thursday morning feast. The breakfastcomment sheet at the front table has disappearedso I guess we are all happy. Or maybe we are justtired.

BJ and his fellow Glorietta Bay traffic monit-or Bill Jepson counted all the money. Jack struckthe bell at 7AM. Off again into the adventure of an-other Optimist meeting. Carla Fargo tickled theheart of the Greensheet editor by using a recentpage two as a prayer. It was pretty good. ThenJerry Thummel lead the pledge,

We introduced Carl Boyd as a guest, butreally he said he was with us in memory of hisgood friend (and ours) Ted Stearns. Toni McCabecame with Marilyn Schaefer, but she is member al

-though an infrequent attender. She has found a

better breakfast somewhere.Stu Powell got to tell the joke of the day,and it was a reminder to be polite to the counter people at the airport, because they hold the fate of your luggage in their power.

Joe Petrucci had a double treat for birthdaykids Leslie Crawford and Roy Mantz, but only Roywas here to enjoy the harmonica and the singing.Joe has figured us out. The smaller part the clubhas in the production the better things sound. Thatis something that former songmeister Fred Hauck.Speaking of Fred, he returned his Greensheet to

me complaining that the flag postage stamp wasaffixed upside down indicating either trouble in theclub or carelessness. Would it be appropriate toask Fred to forget the mistakes of the past.

And speakingof those mistakes of the past, the Dingmas

-ter was back from for-eign shores and readyto help us make our Optimism come true.First he got Jack Cou

-ture for wandering intothe meeting after thebell. Then Lee saw aresemblance to Gooch

in an ad for a new play at the Old Globe about oldaviators. When he propose fining Gooch JohnFreeman upped the ante and suggested that allold aviators be fined. That seemed ok with Mr. Car-gill, and so they all stood up and gave back someof that flight pay. Lee wasnt through yet becausehe he fined Chris Massy for being a realator andPaul Dudley for playing golf with someone whodragged him into the winners circle.

Jerry Thummel won $47 in the 50-50 draw

-ing, and he gave it all to the Youth Fund. Jerry ismaking it hard on those whose children need newshoes if we ever win.

We had significant Optimist Anniversariesthis morning. Leading the pack was Jake Sloanwho has 34 years in the club this week. Next wasBarry Mitchell with thirty years. Then comes RoyMantz with 26 years. Al Aegerter has 13 years, andAnn Boyd has eleven. Lets see. In that group wehave one District Secretary Treasurer, one Gov-ernor, one Lt. Governor, three past presidents (onedistinguished). Of particular note was the collectionof over 9,000 aluminum can pull tabs during theYes We Can effort to help provide a dialysis ma

-chine to a young man in Vallejo. That was JakeSloans work. Ah, remember the day of correctingdumpsters full of aluminum. The smell of stalebeer and deciding which Optimist got to climb upon top to keep the cans moving to the back of thecontainer. Someday we should have a program onthat old program. Does anyone have slides?

Did you know that if you cant change thebatteries in your smoke detector the Coronado FireDepartment will dispatch somebody to do it for you? Talk about service. In 2005 the fire depart-ment responded to 1085 calls in medical emergen

-cies. There were 170 structural fires or desmoking

calls. The department responded to 158 vehicleaccidents. There were 306 other type responses.I guess the cat in the tree is in this category. Our Fire Chief Kim Raddatz told us all about his de-partment including the good fact that the goal is toget a first unit to the scene in under 6 minutes 90%of the time. They do it.

A definite nip was in the air this morning.Hallelujah!! Food again and

Sixty-One of us filed by Buck Rogers andDick Madouse reading the guest list, taking our

badges, and looking over the breakfast commentsheet. Someone, remembering the mistakes of thepast had written, You call this a breakfast!. Yes,Virginia, the mean-spirited do live among us.
