    Aim: Study of an E-mail system

    What is email?

    e = electronic

    mail = letters

    An electronic message sent from one

    computer to another. An electronic document transmittedacross a computer mail system

    Origin MIT(Massachusetts Institute of Technology)firstdemonstrated the Compatible Time-SharingSystem(CTSS) in 1961

    It allowed multiple users to log into the IBM7094 fromremote dial-up terminals, and to store filesonline on disk

    E-mail started in 1965 as a way for multipleusers of atime-sharing mainframe computertocommunicate In 1982, the ARPANET(Advanced ResearchProjectsAgency Network) email proposals werepublished asRFC 821 (transmission protocol) and RFC 822

    (message format)

    Format The format of Internet e-mail messages isdefined in RFC 5322 and a series ofRFCs, RFC 2045 through RFC 2049,

    collectively calledMultipurpose Internet Mail Extensions(MIME).

    Internet e-mail messages consist of twomajor sections:

    Header Structured into fields such assummary, sender, receiver, and otherinformation about the e-mail Body The message itself asunstructured text; sometimes containing a

    signature block at the end

    Header fieldsThe message header usually includes at leastthefollowing fields: From: The e-mail address, and optionally thename of the sender To: The e-mail address[es], and optionally

    name[s] of the message's recipient[s] Subject: A brief summary of the contents ofthemessage Date: The local time and date when themessage

    was writtenOther common header fields include Cc: Carbon copy- indirectly addressing Bcc: Blind Carbon Copy- unknown to the rest

    Things You Can Do with Email Compose and Send: write an email and send

    it to others. Reply: reply to an email that you received.

    Forward: pass on an email that you receivedto others.

    Attachment: You can send files with youremail such as:pictures, music, software and documents

    How does Email Work?

    Email travels via the

    Internet from one

    computer to another.

    Computers known as mail

    servers direct outgoingmail and store incoming
