I explored and mapped areas in what are now southeastern Canada and northern New York. A huge lake in New York was named after me. I also named a trading post Quebec.
In 1524 I was hired by the king of France to find a route around or through North America. I was the first European to see the coast of what is now New York. I thought the scenery was delightful.
I sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean looking for a new way to Asia. My three ships landed at a small island off the coast of North America. I thought I was in a part of Asia called the indies ,so I called the people I saw there Indians .
I sailed my ship along the northeastern coast of North America looking for the Northwest passage. In 1609 I traveled 150 miles ( 240 km ) on waterways into the continent before my ship became stuck in shallow water.
In 1534 I sailed 994 miles ( 1600 km ) into North America on a broad river. I named it the St. Lawrence River.
