PAYMENT AND FUNDING
PAYMENT TO THE STUDENT INTERN The student intern is paid $15/hour. They will work an average of 10 ‐ 15 hours/week for a minimum of 8 weeks. The total award to the student will not exceed $2250.
FUNDING TO THE SUPERVISING FACULTY MEMBER The supervisor provides at least half of the amount paid to the student intern, which is matched by the Office of the Provost and Vice‐President (Academic) up to a maximum of $1125,
EXPECTAT IONS
The intern’s work term is to be a minimum of 8 weeks during the Fall or Winter semester.
The intern is expected to dedicate 10 – 15 hours/week on average, to their research project, not to exceed 150 hours.
Students will be paid $15/hour.
Work must finish by the end of the Winter semester.
An Outline of Responsibilities for the intern and supervisor should be drafted.* Some examples include: o A work plan and timeline, agreed upon at
the beginning of the internship, o Regularly scheduled (weekly) meetings of
the intern and the supervisor, o Student work log.
*The Outline of Responsibilities will vary depending on the Research Project and the work to be done.
THE STUDENT INTERN WILL:
Provide general research assistance to the supervisor working on a specific research project.
Where of interest, use social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to make contact with other undergraduate research interns (I‐CUREUS or otherwise) to share their experiences.
Where applicable, to receive academic credit, complete a major topical paper related to some aspect of the research.
Make themselves available for an interview by a Carleton Journalism student; the resulting story will be used for the current year’s I‐CUREUS blog and other Carleton University publications.
At the end of the project, provide feedback to I‐CUREUS concerning their experience with their supervisor/project, and with the program as a whole.
THE SUPERVISING FACULTY MEMBER WILL:
Mentor the intern and supervise the intern’s work.
Ensure that the intern is paid in a timely manner for work performed.
At the end of the project, provide feedback to I‐CUREUS about the experience with the intern and with the program as a whole

EL IG IB I L I TY
The Special Assistant to the Provost will review all Research Projects and Student Applicants to confirm eligibility.
The Student must:
Be enrolled (part‐time or full‐time) in an undergraduate program in an Academic Unit of the university during the tenure of the internship,
Have a satisfactory Academic Record (e.g. not have an Academic Warning on their record),
Use their Carleton e‐mail account – all communications will be sent through this address.
If a student applicant is not eligible, the Special Assistant to the Provost will notify the student and the supervisor within 10 working days of submission of the student’s application.
The Supervisor must:
Belong to an Academic Unit of the university
AND Hold a research grant at the time
of the internship. This may be an Carleton internal grant, e.g. Start‐up Grant.
NOTE: If you do not currently hold a grant but have a research project idea, please contact Alan Steele, Special Assistant to the Provost, (See the bottom of page 1 for contact info).
Research projects will be assessed on:
Appropriateness of the proposed research work,
Level of supervision and mentorship,
Potential output, such as research papers, and the anticipated learning outcomes for the intern from the experience of working in the research environment.
If a Research Project is not eligible, the Special Assistant to the Provost will notify the supervisor within 10 working days of submission of student’s application.

Identify potential supervisors and discuss opportunities related to their research.
If you do not already have a supervisor in mind, review the available research opportunities listed through Co‐op and Career Services online portal, myCareer: carleton.ca/cc/career/mycareer‐portal/
With your chosen supervisor, complete and sign the ICUREUS application.
By applying, the student agrees that the staff of the I‐CUREUS Program may access their Academic Record to confirm eligibility for the program.
By applying, the student also consents to the release of specific information to participating faculty and/or students of the School of Journalism for the purpose of an interview, story, photo and/or video of the I‐CUREUS student, to be used for the current year’s I‐CUREUS blog and other Carleton University publications. The specific information for release is limited to:

SUPERVISING FACULTY MEMBER
To help students find potential supervisors, register as accepting undergraduate students to assist with your research through Co‐Op and Career Services: Research Opportunities Posting Form.
Identify potential student applicants for the I‐CUREUS program and discuss opportunities related to your own research with interested students.
With the student, complete and sign the ICUREUS application.
By signing the application form, the Supervising Faculty Member agrees to at least match the financial contribution from the Office of the Provost and Vice‐President (Academic), if this project is selected for an internship award.
RESULTS
The Special Assistant to the Provost will advise the student applicant and the supervising faculty member of whether the student’s application has been successful or not within 10 working days of submission.
