Introduction
I Crosswords for Reading Success consists of 122 student crossword puzzles designed
to develop fundamental language arts skills including decoding, encoding, and reading com
I prehension. The worksheets are appropriate for use in developmental reading programs from kindergarten through grade three and in remedial reading instruction through grade nine.
I like the corresponding Cloze Stories for Reading Success, Crosswords for Reading Success are organized in the alphabetical sequence of Philip J. Mcinnis's Primary Level Decoding Keys. The Decoding Key emphasized in the lesson appears at the top of each
I page.
'I Skill Areas. When used together with the Cloze Stories, the crossword activity sheets provide reinforcement in the reading, writing, and spelling of words that the student has already learned to decode. Crosswords also broaden a student's speaking and writing
I vocabulary. To solve the puzzle. a student must be familiar with the meaning of each word within a particular context. In addition to developing word comprehension, the crossword II
I. puzzles teach the student to pay attention to letter-in-word details and to apply relevant clues; for example. the number of spaces provided for the answer, the tense of the verb. singular and plural nouns, and so on.
I I Teaching Suggestions. Crosswords for Reading Success may be used for one-to-one.
small-group, or classroom instruction. In order to provide continuous reinforcement of decoding and encoding skills. it is suggested that the Crossword activity sheet be presented
I to the student several days after the corresponding worksheet in Cloze Stories for Reading Success has been completed by the student.
The first step is to have the student( s) read the Word list appearing at the top of each
I worksheet aloud. The instructor should check to be sure that the student comprehends each word on the list by asking him or her to give a brief definition of each word. If a student does not know the meaning of a word. the instructor should define that word while taking care not to offer the crossword clue.
The next step is to have the student complete the crossword puzzle using only the
I words provided in the Word list. In the beginning, the student should be encouraged to work in an orderly and organized manner. doing first the "across" clues in sequence and then proceding to do the "down" clues in sequence. It is helpful if the student is instructed to put
I a check mark next to a word in the Word list when it is entered in the puzzle. Since each word is used only once, this marking system serves as an aid to the student in solving the puzzle.
I The first few times the crossword activity sheets are used. the instructor may have to keep a close watch until the student is thoroughly familiar with how a puzzle is organized. It is likely that a student will soon develop his or her own approach to solving crosswords,
I and this should be accepted and encouraged. All students need to develop their own systems of organization and work habits. I Philip J. Mcinnis. Decoding Keys for Reading Success. New York: Walker Educational Book Corporation, 1981.
