Episode 2 I Can’t Do Anything Right Study Guide–DVD 1 Fear/Worry created by Laura J. Wellington Questions and Comments 1. Why was Bertrum so happy at the beginning of the story? It was “art day” at school. 2. Do you have a favorite day at school? What is it? 3. What did Bertrum’s teacher like about his picture that she showed to the other students? Bertrum used all of the page to make his picture, not just the bottom of the page. 4. What happened to Bertrum’s picture? Bertrum accidentally knocked over a can of paint. It spilled all over his painting. 5. What did Clayton and the Clydes do when Bertrum spilled paint on his picture? They laughed and snickered. How did this make Bertrum feel? He felt embarrassed. What does it mean to feel “embarrassed”? 6. What happened when the kids were on the playground playing the “balloon game”? Bertrum tripped, fell and missed the balloon. The balloon hit the ground. 7. When the rain started and the kids ran inside, what happened to Bertrum? He fell into a mud puddle. 8. How did Bertrum feel at the end of his day? He felt sad and discouraged and felt that he couldn’t do anything right. 9.What did Bertrum’s father tell him? Everyone has days when nothing goes right. You have to forget it and keep going because every day is a new day. 10. When Bertrum awoke the next morning and it was still raining, how did Bertrum feel? He felt disappointed and didn’t want to go to school. 11. On his way to school, Bertrum ran into Raimundo. How did Raimundo feel about the rain? He seemed to like the rain and had fun playing in the puddles. 12. What happened to Bertrum when Clayton showed up? Clayton leaped into a puddle and soaked Bertrum from head to toe. What did Clayton and the Clydes do? They laughed. How did this make Bertrum feel? 13. As Bertrum started for home to change clothes, who did he ask to come out of the Magic Mirror? Teeter. 14. Bertrum told Teeter that he was having a bad day that was lasting forever.Teeter sang a song saying not to worry, that there will be an end to his sorrow. What happened at the end of the song? The rain stopped and the sun began to shine. 15. When Bertrum won the game of “Red Light, Green Light”, how did he feel? How did his friends help encourage him to win? They said, “Come on Bertrum, you can do it!” Bertrum learns that having a bad day doesn’t mean it’s going to last forever. 1. Have students draw a picture showing how they felt during a time when things didn’t go the way they wanted. Let each student tell about his/her picture. 2. Discuss ways to help others that might cause them to have a better day. Could helping someone else have a better day also help you have a better day? How? Draw a picture showing a way that you can help someone. 3. Have students close their eyes and think about the kind of day they are having today. Open eyes and draw a picture about how they saw themselves. • How many of you drew a picture showing yourself with a smile? Why were you smiling? • How many of you drew a picture showing yourself looking sad? Why were you looking sad? • If you’re not having a “good” day, is there something you can do to help the day become better? 4. We all have things we can’t do as well as we’d like. Have students think of one thing that they can’t do well or can’t do at all, but want to learn to do (Ride a bike, write their name better, catch a ball, etc.). On a sheet of paper, have each student draw a picture showing himself/herself doing the thing he/she wants to learn to do. Discuss what is going to help him/her learn to do this. (Practice, positive thinking, encouragement of others). Activities Produced and Distributed by www.ncyi.org 1-800-477-8277
