MIGUEL BRAGANZA C ross the bridge across the Zuari river and the mauve- pink Cherry blossom like flowers on bare branches are difficult to miss on the Cortalim end of the bridge. It is a tree that is in full bloom these days. Even before one celebrates Carnival and Shigmo, the flow- ers are telling us that Spring-time is nigh. These plants are flowering majestically everywhere on roadside hedges in Salcete, Tiswadi, Bardez, Pernem, Bicholim, Sattari, Ponda, Dharban- dora, Sanguem, Canacona, Quepem and Mormugao. If we have not seen the plant yet, it is just that we have not paused to look for it. Glyricidia sepium or Glyricidia maculata is ubiquitous plant that we just may have ignored till now. The plant is known as “Giri Push- pa” in Marathi and simply as “Sar- eachem zadd” in Konkani as. It has flowers [pushpa] and the leaves are used as green leaf manure (sare) for coconut palms and in rice fields alike. In fact, the Philippines-based Goan agricultural scientist, Julian Gonsalves, has proven that rice can be rotated with a pulse crop like cowpea with Glyricidia leaf ma- nure to get high yields without use of any other fertilizers. The green leaf manure and the mulch with Glyri- cidia is also a good repellant for rats and farm mice. The Glyricidia leaf is also an important component of the biodynamic agriculture solutions to boost crop growth. During the dry season, when there is little green fodder, the foliage is fed to the cattle and goats. The botanical name in Latin, how- ever, gives an indication of its real use in coconut and cocoa plantations. The name Glyricidia is derived from two words, “glyrus” meaning “rat” and “cedos” meaning “to kill” as in insecticide, fungicide, homicide and suicide. It is not for nothing that the Filipinos call it “Kakawate” and the Hondurans call it the “Madre de Ca- cao” or “Mother of Cocoa”: it protects the cocoa pods from damage by rats! I have planted Gyricidia along the compound at Mahamaya Farm in Sal- Bicholim, in March-April, 2012 and earned money selling cuttings while saving the coconuts from rats and also getting the green leaf manure for the areca palms. Glyricidia spells money all the way! Glyricidia is a leguminous tree and belongs to the family Fabaceae. It originated in Central America and is used in many tropical and sub-tropical countries as live fenc- ing as it is planted along the side of fields. Its live trunks are used as fence posts. The smell of the leaves repels the rats, a major pest in both coconut and rice fields. In a con- trast of “the fence eating the crop”, even when alive this legume tree enriches the soil with nitrogen with the help of Rhizobium bacteria in the soil. It is almost a miracle plant adapted to global warming. LIVING GREEN Glyricidia and its myriad benefits SPEAK UP! [email protected] h Or better still write to see your name on this page.
