* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, in Jesus Christ you have reconciled the world to yourself. The empty tomb proclaims your redemption of all that you have made and loved. In Christ’s resurrection lies the hope of our own. Hallelujah! And yet, it is so easy to roll the stone back over the tomb and live as though Easter has not happened. It is easy to retreat to fear. It is easy to continue as though the resurrection were not true. Forgive our fears, enliven our hearts, and call us to proclaim the good news that Christ is risen; he is risen indeed! Amen. THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Death has been swallowed up in victory. People: Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? Leader: The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE ANTHEM “Hallelujah Chorus” from Messiah George F. Handel

Hallelujah! For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth, hallelujah! The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and his Christ. And he shall reign forever and ever. King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Hallelujah! (Text: Revelation 19:6; 11:15; 19:16)

*THE HYMN An Easter Hymn of Praise arr. Mary McDonald 1. Christ is risen, alleluia! Hearts to heaven and voices raise! Sing to God a hymn of gladness, sing to God a hymn of praise. He, who on the cross a victim, for the world’s salvation bled, Jesus Christ, the King of glory, now is risen from the dead. 2. (Choir only) Now the iron bars are broken, Christ from death to life is born: Glorious life, and life immortal, on this holy Easter morn. Christ has triumphed, and we praise Him. Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia, alleluia! Hail him now, our glorious King! 3. Alleluia, alleluia! Soar we now where Christ hath led. Alleluia, alleluia! Following our exalted Head. Christ, the Lamb, for sinners given, rises to his throne above. Jesus Christ, the King of glory, reigns eternal as his love. Jesus Christ, the King of glory, reigns eternal as his love. WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

Welcome to worship at Morningside Presbyterian Church.

Baron Mullis, Senior Pastor is our preacher and Sarah Are, Interim Director of Youth Ministries is our liturgist. Large print hymnals and Bibles as well as hearing aids are available; ushers will gladly assist. Please complete the information in the Friendship Pad at the end of the pews and pass the pads down and back again during the Concerns portion of worship. Children are welcomed and encouraged in worship every Sunday. Worship bags for children can be found in the Narthex. Those who wish to attend Sunday School may do so after the Peace of Christ. Childcare for 0-23 months is in Room 105, and Room 012 for 2 and 3 year olds. Pre-K/K are in room 001. 1st through 3rd grade in room 003.

From the time of their first publication, the organ symphonies of Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) have been recognized as masterpieces. Widor called these works symphonies because of their several movements and because of the symphonic nature of the French romantic organ for which they were written. The Symphony No. 5 and the “gothique” (IX) seem to have been Widor’s favorites. The popularity of the “Toccata” from No. 5 is practically unparalleled in the organ repertoire. It is a toccata in the true sense of the word, with brilliant figuration punctuated by full chords and a melody in the pedals. The organ postlude is a truly celebratory piece for Easter.

The Easter banners made of batik fabrics represent the life and light of Christ rising from death to eternal life on Easter morning. These two banners were made identically to bring emphasis and thanks to Christ Jesus and the Holy Power of God on Easter Sunday. The titles of the banners are:

Blessings of Easter: I am with you always to the end of the age, and Alleluia give thanks to the risen Lord.

There will be no Third Thursday Theology group this upcoming week. We will resume next month. More information will soon follow.
