What is Lift?● Lift is a mechanical force.● Lift is the force that holds an aircraft in the air.● Lift acts perpendicular to the motion.● NO FLUID, NO LIFT

○ It is generated by the interaction and contact of a solid body with a fluid (liquid or gas)

● NO MOTION, NO LIFT○ The difference in velocity between the solid object and the fluid.

What is Weight?● Weight is the force generated by the gravitational attraction

of the earth on the airplane.● Weight(gravitational force) is a field force.● Weight is a force which is always directed towards the center

of the earth.● The magnitude of this force depends on the mass of all of the

parts of the airplane.

What is Thrust?● Thrust is a mechanical force.● Thrust is the force which moves an aircraft through the air. ● Thrust is generated by the engines of the airplane. ● The magnitude of the thrust depends on many factors

associated with the propulsion system:○ type of engine○ number of engines○ throttle setting○ speed.

What is Drag?● Drag is the aerodynamic force that opposes an aircraft's motion

through the air.● Drag is generated by the difference in velocity between the solid

object and the fluid.● NO MOTION, NO DRAG● many factors that affect the magnitude of the drag force including:

○ the shape of the airplane○ the "stickiness" of the air○ the speed.

Newton's Law● Every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a

straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force

● When flying at a constant attitude : If Thrust and Drag are equal, aircraft holds constant airspeed

Aircraft accelerates - airspeed increases Drag depends on airspeed - Drag increaese

● When Drag is again equal to thrust : aircraft no longer accelerates but holds q new, higher, constanr airspeed
