university students had a good time. University

Beats correspondents met up with the trio

    minutes before their performance.

    -

UB: How does it feel to be a part of the

youth, being such a hearthrob of

    university campuses at this age?

Anjan Dutt: Well, I have always tried to

retain my youth, I feel that my these people in

the age group of twenty to twenty five thirty is

my audience, always has been my audience.

Working with young people, working for young

    people.

UB: Are we going to hear some new

songs from you since it has been quite a

    while?

AD: I havent written songs for the last twelve

years. But now I am writing again. I felt that I

wouldnt write songs about the same things in

the same way that I have always done. Amyt

Datta and I are releasing an album called

Unoshaat, which is releasing on the tenth of

May, so we will be back there. This is our own

production, just the two of us. We will be

singing a couple of songs from the album

today . Our music has changed over the years.

You see, an electric band is too populist. This

is where we are doing what we want to do,

explore the art. We have come to a stage of

our life that an electic band restricts us from

doing what we really want to do. I love the

guitar as an instrument. And we are using only

the guitar. Like, so many song writers,

essentially from the West, who have influenced

me. I want to sing their songs.

UB: Your response to Kabir Suman

    winning the nat ional award?

AD: I am very happy. Proud of him.

UB: Pete Seeger passed away this year.

He had a great influence on your music

and on Kabir Sumans music. Additionally,

the protest folk movement has had a

great impact in erstwhile Bengal, and it

still has. So how big a loss is Pete

Seegers passing away ? How did you

    react to that?

AD: See, I dont think Pete Seegers death

was a loss. Because, he was almost a

hundred. And he has written enough songs

that will remain for years. And not only the

    protest movement, I think, as a song-writer

everyone was influenced by him at some point

of time. Its like I dont categorise Pete S eeger

as a man of protest and his politics. I look at

him as the singer who brought back many

songs that were getting lost.I look at him as an

anthropologer, who has brought so many

songs when they were getting lost. Be it

Spanish, be it American or Latin American. I

dont think the death of a man like Pete

Seeger, Rabindranath or Mr Dylan, is a loss.

They have already given us enough.

UB: Your songs have always been about

    average middle class people. Their

anguish and pathos. How do you look

upon the world today amidst so much

political turmoil? You have sung about

child labour in Alibaba and adapted

Michael row the boat ashore, while

speaking of Communal violence. What is

    your stance today?

AD: Very honestly, there has been very little

politics in my music. It has been more of

sociological. It has been about middle class

people around me. I havent explored political

issues in my films or in my music. I am not a

    political-political person. Except that some

incidents touched me. My songs are about

society, about people who are fighting a lost

battle. About us the middle class who are

somehow surviving. Stories of individuals who

have lost, who are lost. I feel that the times

are very dark and everything is in turmoil,

amidst that I am creating my music. You know,

I dont think that political stability will happen. I

dont think that there will be a time when there

is political stability and everyone is happy.I

believe that the world will remain like this and

art will come out of all this pain and grinding

misery. The times are bad, they will remain

    so.

UB: What is your expectation from the JU

audience lsince you ususally perform as

    the D-trio at Someplace Else?

Neel Dutt: Well, here people have come to

listen to us, I hope (chuckles) . At Someplace

Else people usually go to drink. So yeah, I think

we shall have a really good time. D-trio has an

intimate set-up but an auditorium is an ideal

    place for our music.

UB: How does it feel to be playing with

your father and your teacher. Is it

    comfortable?

ND: Oh yeah, it is very comfortable. Both of

them have made an immense contribution to

my music, to my songs. And they are family.

The three of us live in a locality. We are great

friends we hang out together. And the D-trio is

not only about music. It is like an art platform.

Sometimes we recite poetry, there is

instrumental, or we r ead from a diary. We sing

Rabindra Sangeet or talk about film-makers. It

is an art platform celebrating alternative art.

UB: Your response to Kabir Suman

    winning the National A ward?

ND: He is a great singer song-writer who

changed Bengali modern music in the 90s. It is

amazing that he has been recognised

nationally and I respect him a lot. I am very

    happy for him.

UB: Will you go into performing alone in

    the near future?

ND: No, you see. I am more into scoring and

composing. I have been given a lot of offers

but I dont want to perform separately.

Because we have alwa ys performed together

on stage as a father and son. Now another

person has joined us. We also have a

drummer and a bass player performing with us

sometimes. So its a friends-together project.Me doing a solo performance or having

another band is not what I think about right

now. There is too much of music happening.

Different kinds of music. I dont know what I

am going to do separately. I am not a song-

writer. Though I have written songs for films,

I am very happy. Anjan Dutt & the D-Trio speak about Kabir Suman and much more. | University Beats 26-05-2014

    but I am not essentially a song-writer. I like

performing with these people. Maybe later, I

dont know. I dont want to do another cover

band. I want to work more behing the camere,

    the screen.

UB: We have seen a great influence of

folk, rock and rock and roll in Anjan

Dutts music. So what kind of music

inspires you? What is your favourite

    genre?

ND: I have been open to a lot of music. But I

love listening to rock and roll, 60s 70s. That is

    a huge favourite of mine.

UB: Thank you, Mr Anjan Dutt, Mr Neel

    Dutt and Mr Amyt Datta.

To begin with, I would like to extend an arm of

gratitude to Mr Anjan Dutt, Mr Amyt Datta and

Mr Neel Dutt for sparing time to speak to our

correspondents. However, we must admit that

it is our much regretted error that we were

unable to interview Mr Amyt Datta during this

rendezvous. While much of this was due to

time constraints, UB regrets this error.
