I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.
Yo soy la luz del mundo, dice el Señor; el que me sigue tendrá la luz de la vida.
As stewards of the light of Christ, we are to reflect that light with the help of the Holy Spirit. If Christ’s work has transformed and illuminated our lives, there should be a change. The light of Christ’s presence should be at work in us. And as the light shines within us, we take on the properties of that light and we shine too. We are used by God to shine the light of Christ in the lives of ot-hers. A challenging Lenten reflection: Is the light of Christ shining in our hearts? Is the light of Christ reflecting out from us to others?

Question of the Week
4th Sunday of Lent — John 9:1-41
Key Passage: When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered and said, “Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, the one speaking with you is he.” He said, “I do believe, Lord…”
Question for adults: How has seeing with faith made life easier? How has it made life more difficult? Question for children: How has believing in Jesus helped you make a decision?

Annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph
Bishop John R. Gaydos invites you to attend our annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral Church of St. Joseph, 2301 W. Main St., Jefferson City on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 5:30 p.m.
This Liturgy unites the Diocese in recalling the gifts of the Holy Priesthood and the Most Holy Eucharist.
The Oil of the Sick and the Oil of the Catechumens are blessed and the Sacred Chrism is consecrated at this time. These Holy Oils impact the lives of those who are preparing to en-ter into the Church, those who are ill, and all preparing for Confirmation and Holy Orders.
Because of the geographic diversity of the diocese, Bishop Gaydos traditionally cele-brates this Chrism mass on the Thursday prior to Holy Week that his priests may celebrate the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday in their home parish.

Saint Paul gives us a wakeup call. As stewards of the light of Christ, we are to reflect that light with the help of the Holy Spirit. If Christ’s work has transformed and illuminated our lives, there should be a corresponding change in that life we now lead. The light of Christ’s active pre-sence should be at work in us. And as the bright light of Christ now shines within us, we take on the proper-ties of that light and we shine too. The light at the crest of the hill cannot be hid-den. We are used by God to shine the light of Christ in the lives of others. A challen-ging Lenten reflection: Is the light of Christ shining in our hearts? Is the light of Christ reflecting out from us to others?

(CHS Herald) The US bishops in a pastoral reflec-tion released yesterday called all Catholics to do what each of them can “to accompany migrants and refugees who seek a better life in the United States.” Titled “Living as a People of God in Unsettled Times,” the reflection was issued “in solidarity with those who have been forced to flee their homes due to violence, conflict or fear in their native lands,” said a news release from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. “To live as a people of God is to live in the hope of the Resurrection,” said the reflection, which was ap-proved by the USCCB Administrative Committee meeting in Washington. “To live in Christ is to draw upon the limitless love of Jesus to fortify us against the temptation of fear,” it con-tinued. “Pray that our engagement in the debate over immigration and refu-gee issues may bring peace and com-fort to those most affected by current and proposed national policy chang-es.” The bishops urged Catholics to pray for an end to the root causes of violence and other circumstances
forcing families to flee their homeland to find a better life; to meet with new-comers in their parishes and “listen to their story, and share your own”; and to call, write or visit their elected rep-resentatives to ask them to fix our broken immigration system” in a way that would safeguard the country’s security and “our humanity through a generous opportunity for legal immi-gration.” The statement opened with a pas-sage from Chapter 19 of the Book of Leviticus: “The word of God is truly alive today. When an alien resides with you in your land, do not mistreat such a one. You shall treat the alien who resides with you no differently than the natives born among you; you shall love the alien as yourself; for you too were once aliens in the land
(Refugees concluded) of Egypt.” The bishops urged Catholics to “not lose sight of the fact that behind every policy is the story of a person in search of a better life. They may be an immigrant or refugee family sacrific-ing so that their children might have a brighter future.” “As shepherds of a pilgrim church,” they wrote, “we will not tire in saying to families who have the courage to set out from their des-pair onto the road of hope: “We are with you.” Those families could include “a family seeking security from an in-creased threat of extremist violence,” they said, adding that “it is necessary to safeguard the United States in a manner that does not cause us to lose our humanity.” The bishops said that “intense debate is essential to healthy democracy, but the rhetoric of fear does not serve us well.” “When we look at one another, do we see with the heart of Jesus?” they asked. In their reflection, the bishops said that all in this country find “common dreams for our children” in their “diverse backgrounds.” “Hope in the next generation is how the nation will realize its founding motto, ‘out of many, one,'” they said. “In doing so, we will also realize God’s hope for all : that we would see each other as valued sisters and brothers regardless of race, religion or national origin.” The bishops suggested three ways Catholics, “in our own small way,” can “bring our words of solidarity for migrants and refugees to life”: by praying, welcoming newcomers and writing to their elected representatives urging them to support humane immi-gration policies. “Pray for an end to the root causes of violent hatred that force mothers and fathers to flee the only home they may have known in search of econom-ic and physical security for their chil-dren,” the bishops said.
